Interesting to see such a variety of wooden boats, a lot of work goes into maintaining them. Instead of the overhang perhaps some inverse sloping forward windows would achieve the same thing with an additional benefit of better visibility at night. Interesting to hear about the old Distant Shores Southerly 48, a great boat being enjoyed.

I would have loved to have a wooden fishing boat but I have ended up with GRP and steel ones, the insurance, cost of timber and craftmanship are too expensive here in the UK now but I have worked on some fine wooden vessels in the past Port Townsend sure looks like a fine place to set up home.

I have owned a few wooden boats. Nothing big, most were 12 to 19 feet. They have their own unique maintenance issues you have to just be aware of. However they are beautiful if taken care of. Would love to find about a 16 plus foot sailing dorry to play around on the Columbia river. However I think that would be a 2 year building project. Great video.

When I think of wooden boats, my first thought is plank on frame. They look really strong with big, beefy, close spaced frames and thick planks. Really these things show the weakness of the construction method, it is all about the small fasteners being both great in number and having a greater area/depth of timber so they don't pull out. They also suffer from constant racking. Very beautiful to look at, nice to ride in, can last many years and maintenance methods are well known. However, I would not buy or build one because there are better methods available now. I noticed that many of the boats looked at were cold mold or plywood based with fiberglass covering. Certainly for one off building this would be the method I would choose, the frames can be father apart or non-existent (bulkheads can do the job) giving better interior space while still being stronger. If looking for a hull to upgrade... fiberglass would be the way to go. I would probably use plywood for any structural base but still coat it with FG. However the foam you are using on Duracell looks just as good and maybe lighter as well. If I was paying to have a hull built, I might choose metal just because that is most common in this neck of the woods. I have something against sending my money out of the country or even away from the area I live in :) Yes wood looks so nice.... I'll leave that for the interior.

You've prolly already thought of this, but you should try to contact Duracell Batteries and see if you can get them to help sponsor some of the refit. They sponsored the original boat and you're not renaming it as of yet. Everytime you say the boat's name you're giving the company free PR. You video's are great and you'd def be doing them a service. Go get paid!

@ Brannan High: Duracell, was designed and built for a prestigious race sponsored by big-name companies with deep pockets, but a few sailing channels have attracted support from smaller marine equipment firms, so why not The Duracell Project? The question is, at what stage?
@Breennan
@Breennan Жыл бұрын
@@777rogerf I'm not suggesting that Durracell foot the bill for the entire refitt or even that they are obligated to. They did however spend the modern day equivelant of like $2-3 mil to build the thing. The fact that someone wants to keep it alive and maintain the name is awesome for them. They get more good PR and name recogonition and Duracell can keep their mobile bill board afloat almost indefinetly. Even just a license agreement for the name where they pay them a set stipend every month that they maintain the name of the boat and continue to produce KZbin content. A couple hundred/thousand bucks a month is barely a line item in a PR budget for a company like Duracell (that is owned by Berkshire Hathaway btw). Great publicity for very little actual invetment imo.

I have been watching a lot of posts by Dick Beaumont from Kraken Yachts, and I thought of an insane challange for you guys, that is, building an integral keel for Duracell. That would be the mother of all lamination jobs, to say the least. And, a rudder protected by a skegg is also something to be considered if you guys really want to venture out on this boat safely.
