Good point on motivation. Interest ebbs and flows. The one thing you can't let happen is to lose skills that require everyday application. They are not like riding a bike. Oh to be young again!!! Age is the great equalizer in physical activities. Loving this video series.

Wow! Cutting out that console in the center of the boat really opened it up. I can visualize you using that space for a lot of things. If those large containers on each side of the yacht were water tanks, it would seem to me that it would be better to make water tanks that you could build into the bilge for extra ballast, but with a small tunnel under them so that you could still drain any water that gets into the bilge.

The battery powered tools are great but they can burn up fast too. Seeing the spider box in the boat allows you to have tools that plug, they will last longer and have more power in them.

i thought the same thing and realized how tedious and almost rediculous this might be unless you had some super process and 10 extra hands. weighting each cut piece, weighting each piece of glass and pound of resin, oops sanded off some - 3 ounces....oh cut out water ballast tank no idea the capacity by remove maybe 100 gallon ballist at 800 lbs makes significant difference in righting moment i think he already did these calculation or atleast i pray he did...

Comment here about E49 and the bubbles that remained after vacuum bagging the traveler bulkhead... From experience, I am thinking that there might not be a path for the air to escape. IIRC you use (from the fibre and resin up) peel ply, then a porous/perforated membrane, then the bag. It seems to me there is lacking a void layer that would allow the air to travel to the low pressure of the vacuum. Or put another way, for the vacuum to reach the air pockets. Perhaps some breather material would be useful. Old school is to use discarded nylon 3 strand rope below the bag to create a channel towards the vacuum source. I have used oil absorbent pads (expensive, but I have them already). Perhaps consider where you get bubbles and create that path to the vacuum. To get fibre to lay in hollows is a challenge. Every application of a roller or scraper pulls it away. Yeah, the vacuum is meant to pull it down, but that might mean pulling cloth laterally from the surrounding area, which is a challenge as it starts to get sticky. Anyways, keep up the awesome work! The two of you are moving forward and I'm sitting on my butt commenting on yahtube!
@TheDuracellProject
@TheDuracellProject 2 жыл бұрын
hey Dave, we do use breather clothe. The problem wasn't air moving out, it was creating a vacuum. I need a bigger, high volume vacuum for that size of a project with that many complicated parts. i am borrowing one for future big vacuum projects. cheers!

@@TheDuracellProject Yes, its hard to tell the layers from the video. As I watched ep 51, I tried again. The bag is obvious, but the underlayers are less so. May I suggest naming them for us viewers as you lay them down? Tusen Takk.

Just curious about the ballast tanks are these used in place of someone sitting on the side when the boat is healing over? If so would the ballast be transferred from one side to the other when tacking to catch a better position in wind or changing direction ?

I find the prevailing notion that racing boats are somehow “unsafe” to be interesting. They can be more fragile than a heavy cruiser if you happen to crash into things, but they are also often better engineered to withstand high sailing loads. They often also come with safety features such as watertight bulkheads to mitigate some of the crashing risks.
