Thank you for your most informative video which saved a DeLonghi portable a/c similar to the Frederich's from the scrap heap. It was a capacitor that caused the exhaust fan not to start. You mentioned that these units are not designed to be serviced. I often see pallets with 10 or more at the Goodwill Outlet for $15 a pallet. Some units appear new. Regarding the Frederich brand, it was once a premium built A/C manufacturer.

My experience with repairing these AC units have often been the same problem. They are designed to fail! The first one I fixed was due to a failed voltage regulator on the mainboard caused by getting to hot due to an undersized heatsink that blew 2 capacitors in the process. The second AC unit was similar to this mans problem. The fans are poorly made the outer ring of the fan has barely any plastic holding the actual blades together. The air coming out the AC unit is hot and either dry that makes the plastic bridal or humid if you AC unit burns off the water it produces. The water that it burns off is slightly acidic also breaking down the plastic over time. You will see the fans break apart then in some cases stop the motor or create enough resistance to cause the fan motor to work harder increasing amperage causing the breaker to pop. Unless you are handy and have time on your hands to diagnose and troubleshoot the problem and then also lucky enough to find the replacements parts at a decent price your SOL. Most people just buy a new one and the companies know this, it should be a crime to produce a product that is designed to fail. These failed units have a large assortment of parts that still function just fine and end up in the dump. Truly sad the world we live in.

I agree with you 100%. And I live in Florida where people throw away anything that is in perfect working condition simply because they are moving, usually out of state. I've made a little money selling things I've found that were to be thrown away. It's absolutely appalling how we've come to this mindset. It's not ok.

I had one for 10 years... Loved it.. was 12,000 btu.. Its its older days started rattleing, plastic started breaking and yellowing.. Drain would plug ... And finally leaked all the freon out. I knew its life was done.. Just got a new 14,000 btu unit.. but hasn't been hot enough to fairly comment on the new one yet.

Good job. I had my exhaust fan blower cage break just like yours. Dozens of the slat pieces on the floor of the portable A/C. I cleaned that up, and can spin the squirrel cage easily by hand. But when I turn on the system, cold air blows out the top, but no hot air discharges out the back. The exhaust fan motor does not appear to be kicking on. So ... Do you think when the cage breaks, the motor typically fails, too? What voltage should I get at the exhaust motor? Thanks.

Thank you for this video. I have a Honeywell 14,000 unit that the compressor gets hot, sounds like it's trying to run for a few moments every 30 to 60 seconds, then stops. Zero cooling whatsoever, not just inadequate. Think the compressor is seized? Or could it be just at the refrigerant has escaped, simple smoke/leakfix/vacuum/addport/fill job?

I have a haier 7000btu portable that is making terrible noises and am pretty sure it might be the fan. problem is the fan and blower motor is sandwiched between the two coils (the two sets of coils aren't stacked) on this model so I'm a bit unsure how to proceed.

I recently inherited a single hose portable air conditioner from a friend and got it hooked up and running well for a few hours; when it started making an awful knocking sound that woke me up. Because of your video, I knew where to look, after removing the hose, sure enough, I could see broken plastic blades. I wonder how much a repairman will charge to fix it. 🙁

Hi Jon, thanks for your prompt response, I managed to eventually get the covers off (without damaging the unit)and cleaned the unit, there was a lot of dust build up. I also emptied about 500ml of water when I opened the water plug...this unit does not hold much water, does it work properly when it's filled with water? Or do I have to continue to empty it in the future? You did mention something about that in the video....also would I need to ever refill gas in this unit over time....thanks again for the your help and for posting a great video.

Thanks for the informative video. I have a unit similar to the one you repair, there is no physical damage, just stopped getting cold. @jonhvac
@jonhvac 8 жыл бұрын
+Anthony Green Sorry for the delayed response. Make sure the filter(s) are clean and the coils. If their fine you may have a leak and low on charge. They don't really make these easy to be recharged. You need a piercing valve like this: amzn.to/1WoPku6 to add refrigerant. I don't really recommend you attempt this, unless you know what your doing. You can get seriously injured. Your kind of at a catch 22 here, not really worth buying the parts and tools or to hire a repairman.

I have a Toyotomi 14k BTU that looks almost exactly like that one when you remove the housings. It cools well but the compressor is making a noise that resembles a fan blade hitting the housing. Opened it up, and like you said, there’s no service ports or any way to dig in deeper without evacuating the Freon. No clue where to find a replacement compressor either. I guess I’ll run it until it dies, but that noise sure is annoying.

Hey man, good video. Have you ever seen one of this kind of unit that leaks a ton but has a little to no water in the catch pan? We have a Whynter ARC-14s and a day ago it started leaking a bunch of water. Went to put a hose on the pan but nothing came out. Tilted the unit to see if anything was in there and only got a few ounces. Yet it's producing a bunch of water, to the point we may have to get the carpet replaced. It's of course july in northern VA atm so it's 100F with almost 100% humidity most days and we can't go without running it. Not sure I could afford a tech at this point and I simply can not find a service manual for these things. Any advice would be helpful man.
@SuperG11123

My capacitor leaked oil, which gummed up the float switch so it wouldn't turn the unit off when the high water mark was reached causing this issue. Additionally, large amounts of dust and/or leaking oil prevents the lower coils from evaporating the water effectively out the exhaust. The bottom reservoir is quite small so you may only get a couple of dinner plates worth of water to drain out.
@gotindrachenhart
@gotindrachenhart 2 ай бұрын
@@SuperG11123 I literally got spoonful's of water out of the tank. Meanwhile, it's happily dropping about two gallons a day down the insides of the body and out the bottom. I managed to get the front off last night and the heat exchangers aren't actually very dirty. I couldn't manage to get the back off despite taking the two hidden screws out so not sure what's going on there. We have it in a large plastic pan (picture a massive cookie sheet), and just sop it up until we find a fix or break down and replace it. I just hate the whole disposable society thing ya know?

I have a very similar air portable air conditioner (WHYNTER ECO_FRIENDLY 14,000 BTU PORTABLE AIR CONDITIONER WITH HEATER MODEL# ARC-14SH) that I use in my studio that worked fine for the past two years then all of a sudden started making a lot more noise. When I look through the top area where the cold air blows out it looks like the thing that is spinning is looser than it used to be so it is hitting back and forth slightly. It still blows out cold air but am wondering if I need to take it apart and try to tighten something up. You did not take the top part off in the video so was not sure if this was something I should attempt to do since the air still blows cold and the heat still works as well but was not sure if I would possibly causing more damage by doing nothing ;) Not sure where you are located but if it is not something you think I can mess with do you have a recommendation for someone in the Charleston SC area?

Hey thanks for this video. I have a few portable units (upper level of home gets waaay too hot). I have one problem unit (a Delonghi Pinguino PACAN120HPE 12K BTU) with the lone exterior exhaust/negative pressure bad design that's so prevalent that once the compressor kicks in, it's pulling more than 15 amps and tripping the circuit breaker for the house wiring in my room. Bad compressor start/run capacitor? Dirty coils? It runs quiet and cools nicely, but pulls more power than it should. Maybe just a bad compressor? Any thoughts / input appreciated - your video gave me a few good ideas... ;)
@jonhvac
@jonhvac 8 жыл бұрын
+Pete Kowalsky Hi Pete, Keep in mind that each 15amp breaker usually run multiple outlets. Since you said your running multiple portable units. You may be just pulling too many amps for that circuit. If that's not the problem check your filter, coils, run cap for comp. Possible refrigeration circuit issue or just a bad compressor. Hope this helps
@PeteKowalsky

So I cracked open the unit this evening and oh my gosh man it was DISGUSTING inside. The condenser coil (bottom one) was CAKED with crap over 1/4" thick. Nasty! :) A thorough cleaning with my air compressor and gentle fingertip agitation (no I didn't screw up the fins) seems to have done the trick. I think the compressor was overheating, drawing too much power, and tripping the house breaker. No, none of the other units are on this circuit either. ;) Lots of cool air, quieter operation, and it doesn't seems to want to catch anything on fire any more HAHA!!! Hey - where do you recommend a non-licensed DIY homeowner like me purchase supplies and stuff? I try to get as much as I can for my household projects from eBay / Amazon, and Johnstone is getting more and more picky about "cash customers", even if I know exactly what I need... Maybe I should take a class / courses at the local community college and get EPA / HVAC licensed? I have no idea what level of commitment that would be, time or money-wise. (I'm not interested in making a career out of it -- already have one of those) but maybe you have some videos about that...will check. Subscribed - your videos are really good, and I appreciate your work ethic and great attitude. THANK YOU for taking the time to share your expertise as well.
@jonhvac
@jonhvac 8 жыл бұрын
That will do it for sure. Sounded like it was really bad there. As far as purchasing supplies, your already doing what I would recommend. I'm actually surprised Johnstone is selling to a "Joe Schmo" pardon the pun lol! I would keep a good thing like that going if I were you. Bring them some donuts or Starbucks next time to keep that gravy train going :) Community college is usually pretty good, but like you said it does take time and $. Books aren't cheap. And you may have a ROP school by you ( Regional Occupational Program) and are free/low cost. Some power utilities put out seminars about HVAC and those are usually free. It all depends how much you want to put into it. And as you know KZbin is pretty good as well lol! I would recommend this channel: Town & Country Air PRO. It is a paid channel $1.99/month but, there's no commitment you can cancel your subscription anytime. He's a really good guy and knows his stuff. I'm glad I was some help. I really appreciate the kind words Pete.

I got a honeywell air conditioner with heat pump. only comes with one hose. Instructions don't say to put a 2nd one to the window, so i didn't. Fresh air comes from inside the room, exhausts out the window. The heat works well....until the temp outside is too cold. like down in the 30's or less. Then the heat pump doesn't put out much heat at all. sometimes feeling like a fan. Do you think the "negative pressure/positive pressure" over the coils would effect the heat pump as well? Basically, the thing feels like its just an AC, but the exhaust and in room air blower are reversed based on heat or ac mode
@jonhvac
@jonhvac 5 жыл бұрын
The negative pressure/positive pressures are probably not very good with a heat pump. Once the temp gets below the 40s heat pumps don't perform very well.

Very interesting video I was always interested in air-conditioning I took apart a couple portables myself as far as the exhaust discharge it is a little on the high side considering that you’re in putting only 70° temperature imagine when it hits 90the unit might go into high head pressure cut off. Great job otherwise!

Could the compressor not be working? i transferrred it to a different outlet and still did the same? can you suggest anything?

hello, i have a portable unit (global air npa1-10c). only had it for 6 months. a couple of days ago, i came home, turned it on and the noise was unbearable. took it apart and found the source. its the blower wheel. for some reason its off kilter and the slight angle is causing the wheel to teeter as it spins. any idea how to straighten it out? how does that even happen? what would be the best course of action? is it the motor or the blower wheel? any help would be greatly appreciated.

General tip: ALL compressor motors draw 2 to 5 times RUNNING current to start. If a compressor is running, shut down and restarted quickly, it will strain and draw BIG current trying to start AGAINST pressure in lines. WAIT 10-20 minutes, allow pressure to bleed down, THEN restart as designed without stressing the compressor pump.

+RAYNOLD SERRANO Thank you. Make sure all the blower motors are coming on and staying on. If one of the blower motors isn't operating correctly, it maybe a bad run cap for one of the motors (including the compressor's) or just a failing motor. Check the condensing coil and filters to see if they are clean.

What do the capacitors look like in a portable ac unit? Might try replacing mine to see if that fixes the problem and do a regas as well. Otherwise I think it will be the compressor in which case I'll just have to throw it away and get a new one.

If the noise is not coming from the fans, it's likely the compressor. Which would be bad news. Sometimes compressors sound horrible when they're a little low on gas. Or that compressor could have some internal mechanical issues.

+Ed Thomson Hi Ed, Not being abel to see it, it's a little difficult to say. I've only worked on these a few times. I've seen the front cover have one screw at the bottom and have hooks that slide in to each side panel mid level. And looking from the back (with the back cover off) there might be one screw on each side internally holding the front cover on, you'll need a long philips for that. You should be able to slide the front cover up and off at that point. and continue disassembly. It is tricky to take the covers off these things.

@SuperG11123
@SuperG11123 2 ай бұрын
During periods of high humidity, if the evaporation from the 'water wheel' can't keep up the float mechanism triggers the high water level which shuts off the unit preventing your floor from flooding. You then let out the water from this drain plug you mentioned to quickly recover use of the AC. Otherwise, you attach a regular hose to the upper threaded drain plug and put it in a bucket or floor drain for continuous use...

Try a different outlet if you didn't already. An electrical meter would help. You can get one at Harbor Freight Tools for cheap or free with a coupon. You'll have to take the casing off of corse. Check for power where it comes into the unit (with it plugged). If you don't feel comfortable working with electricity I wouldn't recommend you do so. Some circuit boards have fuses as well. hi. i watched the video but i was wondering if you could tell me more about the noises the different parts make when they go bad. i picked a unit up off the curbside and owner said that it worked but needed a new fan. the blades were broken like this one but the fan still turns freely so i didn't think the motor was seized. evidently they did not have the grill cover on the intake and something got in there. i ordered the parts i could figure out i needed by looking at the manual and I'm still waiting for the fan to come to switch out but now that I've got all the grill covers and connections i turned it on to see how it worked and it blows regular temp air for a minute or so not too loud, but then this horrible loud noise starts. is this the condenser kicking on or is this the sound of a fan that is missing 1/3 of the blades? it is quite loud and choppy but have no idea how to explain. any advice or videos you can suggest to trouble shoot? thanks!

Once you have the 18 screws attaching the back panel out (don't forget the 2 hidden screws in the recess of the two side 'handles', if your model has this), put your fingers under the long 5/8" plastic piece at the top belonging to the front panel just behind the pop up louver mechanism and pry up and towards the front. This releases the front panel for removal. Once this is done, it exposes the 2 remaining internal screws holding the back on, remove these and remember to push the hose drain threads in at the back to clear the panel as you remove it and you're done

You may have the same problem I have. When I turn it on the fan starts making an extremely loud noise. What basically happened was a band around the fan blades that holds them together broke off so now when I turn it on the fan blades spin and expand on the outer edge so they scratch up very badly on the inside. Can't imagine how it happened but you can buy a new fan online for around 10-25 dollars, that's what I plan on doing for my PacN100e delonghi. It isn't the easiest fix you have to take a lot off..
