Basically with this set up you could just plug the external HD into a USB with VLC and do most of the same things. It'd have been more impressive had you disconnected your internet but stayed connected to WiFi and played your movies on a different device.

Jason - except the problem i had doing it that way for when i'm up in alaska with no internet is that with VLC you can't have all the metadata without manually putting nfo in folders. so if you have a bunch of movies and can't remember what's what it makes it tough. unless VLC also does that which would be funny cuz i love VLC & would be really pissed at myself for not knowing about it:)-barbie

you can just type the IP of the host pc insted of "localhost" on another pc in the same network and it will work.

So you're not really using Jellyfin as a server, you're just using it as a library manager at this point. Nice product plug.

could you do this with a TV at home and a Asustor Nas and just plug the Nas into the TV via HDMI and then install jellyfin on the smart tv and run it that way without internet?

Jellyfin would be hard to do since there is really no server available for Jellyfin to support portalable devices. I recommend using EMBY got to emby.media and click downloads you will find a lot more options

My thing - the main reason for me is that i'm a fishing guide in Alaska, no internet. i bring movies for the whole gang. the nice thing about JF is that you can do what iTrust is talking about & then when you're offline & have like 500 movies like we do - someone that's not familiar with your collection can actually scroll thru & see the plot/actors etc. & decide if they wanna watch it. before i got JF i did the same as you suggested My thing - i had a 1TB sd card and we watched em with VLC (i fkng love VLC). the only problem with that is unless you download all the metadata .nfo files etc. you will only get the name of the movie... which don't get me wrong, is way better than nothing but when you've got that many movies sometimes you can't remember which movie is which. does that make sense? i honestly don't think you're trolling (but i'm gullable:)) - cuz i used to just go the VLC route as well. the one issue i've run into tho is that depending on your laptop, H265 will be little slower skipping forward/back etc. cuz it has to transcode on the fly but H264 works great. damn man, sorry for the ramble:) -barbie
