Hello Lap Hong, If I'm flying Portable; Basically wheat, milo and Austrian peas. Loft flying; Wheat, milo, Austrian peas, Canadian peas, millet, safflower, buckwheat and hemp. Wheat is the highest at 50%, hemp the lowest 5%. I also use barley; If they leave the barley they're to chubby, if they eat all of it, they're to thin.

Hello Jim, I only feed corn during the colder winter months, mid December, January and February, when the temperatures drop below 10 or 15 degrees F. Corn has the highest caloric value of all the grain, my pigeons wouldn't look at it, unless it's cold. I only feed popcorn. More videos coming this Winter.

Hello 680ecks, I've trained a lot of older pigeons to the Portable, to find out their level of performance, intelligence,shyness, etc., before wasting my time breeding them. They're not as stable as young birds, but they can be trained Portable with out much more trouble. I believe if I'm going to get the best out of a pigeon, it needs to learn what I expect of it at a young age.

@Roberts5l
@Roberts5l 10 жыл бұрын
Hello Mert, They only go into the portable for their meals, not as a loft, as it is to small. Easy to train to portable, put the portable "box" in the loft with food, that's the only place they eat. Good luck with your babies

@Roberts5l
@Roberts5l 10 жыл бұрын
Mert Sahbaz Try putting some sort of feed tray on top of the box first, get them feeding on top of the box, once they are comfortable feeding on top of the box from the tray, put less food in the tray and more in the box, when they finish the food in the tray, they should drop into the box. Be patient with them and they should learn it in a week.

Cool way to keep them. I guess you lost quite a few birds before getting the right flock to always only return to the portable?
@Roberts5l
@Roberts5l 10 жыл бұрын
Hello Will, If a Cooper's hawk comes in and busts up the flock early in training, it might cause difficulty rounding them up, otherwise losses are rare if trained properly.

Hey Robert sorry to bother you again,this is Danny,just wanted to ask you what you think of NYC flying flights as far as flying performance,loft flying.do they stay close to the loft?are they athletic in the air?
@Roberts5l
@Roberts5l 10 жыл бұрын
Danny, You are no bother. Here's a video which shows the same NYC Flights athletic abilities as well as stamina and smarts. First they're flying in 50 mph winds, attacked by a Peregrine, drift 1 mile downwind to a different bluff, then obedient enough to battle their way back, WOW! When I've flown them from home they are usually in sight but will range/route some. NYC Flying Flights Field Flying from top of bluffs in 50+ mph winds The real athletes are the Vieshian's; VIESHIAN BLACKS / Typical day flying in light winds

Hey Robert God bless.how do you deal with Falcons or any bird of prey.is there a time a year you fly more or less depending on falcon migration or something like that.i have rollers and yesterday a falcon killed my best hen.i flew in the summertime and had no problem,but tempetures went up hear in rock creek Ohio for a couple days and I let the birds out and this happend.any advice on how to deal with birds of pray attacking my flock.i know that they will always be around but is there a time of year that's better to fly?
@Roberts5l
@Roberts5l 9 жыл бұрын
Hello Danny, Sorry you lost your best hen, it can be frustrating when raptors hit your kit. Cooper's hawks are the toughest on captive pigeons, where I live they show up about October (Immature birds), most migrate South by January, including adults. I've had to "Lock-down" my Galati Rollers. If your "positive" it was a falcon, it would have been a Peregrine or Merlin, on migration and unlikely to hang around for future meals. Falcons like to take their prey in the sky. If it was a Cooper's hawk, which take their prey at "Treetop" level or lower, they may hang around the "Restaurant" if the pickings are good, until a hard cold front pushes them South. If it was a falcon (high speed dive) high in the air, I would continue flying the kit, and assume it left the area. If it was a Cooper's hawk, I'd "Lock-down" the kit for a few days, and be aware of the local wildbird activities, look carefully through the tree limbs for hawk silhouettes. The months of the year that "I" fly without raptor attacks are January until late September, I'd think it would be similar at your longitude.

Here are to videos for an example of breeds that might make you wait for them, of course "Droppers" will really help get them down sooner. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gH2yqZanmMhqoZo kzbin.info/www/bejne/e16lnWyrjbhlosk

They are conditioned through repetition, fed and flown at the same time. I have birds, that are fat as pumpkins, that rush to load into the box, because they are "CONDITIONED", to do that. Like humans are conditioned to believe they need 3 meals a day, when the sun rises, where's my "Coffee", 12:00noon where's my lunch? etc. I feel a little bad that I've "conditioned " them in a similar manner that the "Powers that be" have conditioned the human race to be addicted to "Technology" and material goods. Who would pay $800.00 for a Phone? an conditioned addict! Do they like paying that phone bill every month? NO, but they jump into the box just like pigeons, lol.

+Arbaz Shah Yes, "BUT" you'd either have to fly from the same exact location all the time, or change to a different location "every" time, and you could never fly them from a home loft. I've flown pigeons from the exact same spot in a parking lot for 2 weeks in a row, the next time I flew there, someone parked in my space. The pigeons went to that space instead of my truck, and landed on a very nice "Sports" car, not good.

Hello Jason, I've flown Fireball Rollers, BR's, Oriental Rollers, and Iraqi tumblers to the portable. The only advise I'd give would be; Fly close to "Sunset" if your Rollers fly high, or you could be waiting a long time for them to come down, have fun! Robert

@Roberts5l
@Roberts5l 10 жыл бұрын
Hello Jason, Yes, if trained as young birds, but you would have to fly them from a different location ever time, so they wouldn't become wedded to any one location, and you could never fly them from a "Home Loft", or else every time you flew Portable they'd just head home. In WWI the "Pigeon Corps" would haul a portable loft/wagon to a location, train the young birds, soldiers would take them across enemy lines, and the birds would return to the wagon/loft parked on a hill top, with only one week of training! There was also a system I believe in N. Africa, where the "Pigeon Corps" trained Homers, to roost in one loft (A) at night, fly 100 miles in the morning to another loft (B) to feed and water, then fly back to loft (A) to roost for the night, to cool! Also some great pigeon history, is the pigeon lofts on old clipper ships, where the homers would be released when the ship was still two days out of port, to inform the port as to what goods they had procured, and how many mates would be required at docking. Pigeons are amazing!

Hey I was wondering if you ever have a problem with young babies getting these huge lumps right by their anus which start to bleed? I have just been treating them with neosporin which seems to work a little. But do you have any idea how i can stop them from getting them. I even had one get it right next to its eye. It is kinda sad. And i feel like a bad owner because the babies keep getting them.

Hello Nathan, Sounds like parasites, probably pigeon fly "maggots". Find a local Pet Store, that carries lice/mite/internal worm "drops", you place 2 or 3 drops on the skin, on the back of the pigeons neck, kills all internal and external parasites. Hope this helps.
