Loft Flying Young Birds. Are they fat? HTTYP Ep24

My young bird team are not flying very long. I'm unsure if it's because they're fat (they've started to leave food), they're heavy in the moult, they're too hot, the younger young birds are holding them all back or do they have respiratory issues? Time to find out by changing what I feed the young racing pigeons and split the younger and the older YBs up. Loft flying should then show up whether the changes I'm making are helping.

Easy rule of thumb is 2 tablespoons per bird per feed, and you really should be using a flag on yb, s mate for maximum training time

I do get the broom out to get them up but they'll often just fly onto a neighbouring roof 🙄

Dont worry about the molt its a natural process i always cut the last flight and will pull it after 3 weeks plus that way it is a full wing when racing starts but we race in the winter in AUS so u may not have to worry about it and if they are panting hard when they land and wont leave the area when exercising they probably have respiratory disease.

Belangrijk is om regelmaat te hebben. Op vaste tijden de duiven los. Duiven moeten vliegen als ze buiten zijn en niet in de tuin laten scharrelen. Duiven hebben genoeg aan 30 gram voer per dag. 10 gram ‘s morgens en 20 gram ‘s avonds. Succes met je duiven, leuke filmpjes.

It might just be because of where they are in the moult. Hopefully they’ll pick up again in a week or so. Try lighten the food as planned but don’t make too many changes, otherwise you’ll find it harder to workout what did or didn’t do the trick.

Yeah this is the problem. Hard to know what it is. I'm changing feeding first, then I'll look at the next step.

I watched Feather Elite interview with May Pigeons (first 10 mins of so of interview) and they basically let their young birds do whatever they want until between 6-8 weeks before the first race and then they have to work. But never forced. May pigeons win pretty much everything so must being doing things right.

also dont feed protein pryer to the race.

You need to lighten the feed I use super diet and young bird no maize 50 / 50 just give 1 ounce per bird for a few days then when there up and at increase 1.25 ounces each bird and change to 25% diet 75 % main mix

Yes I think that's they way to go. I've dropped their feed and gone onto without maize now, I'll mix that with barley for a few days too I think.

Vanrobaeys race and breed is the best all round feed mate stay clear of barley totally, and get some gerry plus

These were all gifted. If you join a club and actively participate, I.e offer to help out, get involved in the social side you'll make a few friends and they may offer to breed you some birds.
