To anyone that buys one of these, flashing to the latest version of CleanRom is a must. It fixes several performance issues and greatly cleans up the bloat. I was struggling to run any emulators out of the box on this thing. Since updating to CleanRom I can now run 99% of all games up N64 without any issues. I've yet to test PSP and dreamcast isn't quite there for perfect performance. I went from 3 stars out of the box to 5 stars once flashed with a better firmware.

It runs psp games great with few exceptions on custom firmware and runs dreamcast and anything before it pretty well even got a few naomi games working.

I've had this very model of GPD for a couple years now, and my mileage was rather close to yours. Fortunately, I actually was looking for a handheld MAME machine since most of my favorite games pre-date 1999 anyhow. And this works great for that. The XD+ lives in my travel bag and is great when on a plane ride. I've had more than a few seatmates ask about it when they see me playing Donkey Kong or Pac-Man. And that's something it does with aplomb.

Wrestling With Gaming I'd say it's ready now. I have the previous model and I've little desire to upgrade. I can play up to and including PS1 with Retroarch and that works for me. Each to their own though!

Really enjoyed this very well done review. I picked up the 64GB red original GPD XD around 9 months ago, and I still play it all the time, especially all the Metal Slug games. It runs retro games beautifully, and even with the older 4.4.4 Kit Kat version of Andriod, it still runs apps really well. The screen is great, the complete button layout works very well, and the build quality is great. One of my all time favorite gaming purchases ever, and I highly recommend it, especially with this upgraded version getting such a significant processing boost. I fly FPV racing drones, and discovered you can easily use any brand FPV goggles as the monitor for the GPD XD. Put on the goggles, and it's just like you're in a dark movie theater playing your games on a huge screen. Try it, you'll love it.

Using the GPD XD actually ever since the first incarnation and it’s a great machine. I don’t think the differences are too significant for me to think about upgrading it so I’ll stick to the old one. It’s a great little system. I think the old one with android 4.4 is actually more compatible with older games like expandable re-armed which will not run on the newer devices. I believe on the new GPD XD it won’t run. A stellar twin stick shooter, Android really supports the best version of it. You should try geometry wars three, that should run great on the new one. Also made a couple of videos on it a while ago when the first units came out.

lactobacillusprime Hey dude. I have the original too and it really is a lovely little device. One thing that would make me want to upgrade is the AC wireless. You can stream games from your PC using 'Moonlight' but I find the N/G wireless on the original just can't quite keep up. Would be keen to see if any other owners find the same if they use it.

Phil Underhill that could work better perhaps, but with my experience of streaming games on many different platforms using many different devices locally or from some server far far away I have always been disappointed. Action oriented games just won’t work - too much lag is introduced. Turn based RPGs will be easier.

Thanks. Mame spans a wide period, like the consoles it's just great with 2D performance, newer 3D roms are hit and miss. I'll do a live stream soon and take requests

If anyone buys one of these make sure you assign "quit retroarch" and "menu" to the R3 and L3 buttons to get around the built in firmware conflict that the device has with apps that's access the physical controls. They'll stop working completely and the only way to fix it besides the buttons assignment is a hard factory reset from the UI android settings.

The main issue on the 3D is it doesn't have the Octo Core grunt of new Android technology yet nor does it support 8-16GB RAM yet like newer systems will do.

There are Raspberry PI kits to make your own handheld Game emulator. There are also hundreds of Gameboy knock-offs on Amazon with +200 preinstalled games for as little as $25.

I bought the first version of this for my 10-year-old. He uses it all the time after a full year of ownership. I will be honest and say that I had to fully set it up for him and I did change a lot as I hated the front end and the Happy Chick vileness. It's now a pretty good multiplatform handheld games machine now. I still have not worked out how to get games to play off the micro sd card though so I would advise buyers to go for the 64gb version. We mostly play GBA and DS games on it with a few SNES games and Dreamcast games.

Quite expensive; I picked up the Linx Vision tablet for £80 before Christmas. Xbox One and Steam streaming, full windows, 7” screen, and decent controls (if you have large hands). Emulation is not specifically tuned, but seems to work as well as on this device.

you could of course just get something a clip for the 8bitdo controller and clip it to your phone, which will probably be cheaper and if you have a decent phone will both perform better and look beter.

I feel like a this point, if you have a modern phone that's at most 3 years old, you might as well buy a blutooth phone controller, as everything that can be experienced with this thing can be done better with your phone, albeit with a smaller screen depending on what you have.

A second hand DSi or DSi XL coupled with an R4i card makes for a great 8-bit gaming emulation, particularly with ZXDS, arguably the best Spectrum emulator on any device.

I got my XD Plus around 6 weeks ago and I’m loving the crap out of it. (Arc Browser is a must, though it’s surprisingly expensive). N64 games work very well for me, with Goldeneye having a few issues but being far from unplayable. Almost completed Banjo Kazooie. Perhaps it’s newer firmware or something like that. Ditto Dreamcast - then perfect 3DO and DS put this above the Pi. ZX is a pain however. Most games are only playable with the touchscreen keyboard covering the whole screen. Jetpac and the first 2 Dizzy games are about it for me - unless I’m doing something wrong.

I use a emulator manager on my GPD XD called "Gamesome frontend" it starts up automatically when I turn the system on and has all the emulators AND roms in one place. Select the system you wanna play then select the rom and your good to go.

What would you recommend as cheaper alternative to this? Mainly looking at SNES, GBA, GBC games, and also in a handheld form factor. PSP, PS1, Dreamcast & N64 would be great as well but not 100% necessary. Haven’t had any luck finding something affordable that could do this well. GameShell seems promising.

What titles are you wanting to play? I play Persona 3 Portable, Final Fantasy III, IV and Tactics, Tales of Eternia, and Ys I & II Chronicles and Ys 7. All of them work perfectly for me.

A really decent (for the price) gaming device that could also easily double a portable media player. You don't even need a stand. The CPU side is decent, the main drawback of this device is poor 3D performance (that PowerVR wasn't the best even in 2014, let alone now). If they could pack some higher-end hardware (especially in terms of graphics) in this form factor, that would be a killer gaming device.

Hi. Nice review. Do you notice the inability of the gpd xd plus to provide stable refresh rate?? vsync doesnt work and all emulators have stutters. especially noticeable in 2d games. this is an known issue of the gpd xd plus and im just curious if you notice it too. Pretty much the reason im returning mine

can any one help me, I have a gpd xd which worked fine for ages then I put it away for a few months and when I tried to use it again happy chick says not connected to the internet but the console is connected to my Wi-Fi all apps work fine as should only happy chick doesn't, I've tried everything I've download happy chick again and it still says the same, iv also done a factory reset and still the same problem I can only play games if I put my rg30 micro card in as iv deleted games while doing a factory reset, has happy chick stopped or is this an easy fix

the hardware is decent, the main issue is the GPU driver that is rather shitty and unoptimized which is why the 3D performance in some emulators and games isn't the greatest.

RetroManCave haha, nothing I was reading the instructions you showed for getting roms on the menu and noticed that piece of mangled Engrish, and I was commenting basically to point it out and agree with your assertion that the built in software made the device seem much cheaper than its build quality first suggests, which is a shame because it seems a really nice device for what it is. If I didn't have a PSP, I would consider getting one. Anyway, just a flippant comment with an accidental Chuckle Brothers tribute at the end. No problems with anything you did, I personally thought you did a great job showing the good and the bad of the device without over -stating the case in either direction. actually, while you're here; I have that Residents song built around ZX spectrum loading sounds, if you're still interested. Would it be OK just to upload it to KZbin and link you to it once it's up? If you're not bothered, no worries but I found it the other day and meant to drop you a line asking if you wanted it as you seemed interested when I mentioned it existing on another video. Anyway, love the videos and hopefully that explains what I meant. Keep up the good work. 👍

Na, I'll stick to my Moto G5 plus, and a my MOGA Hero Pro game pad, which has a built in battery to charge my phone while I play, along with my "NEW" 2DS XL for when I don't want to run emulators, or game off the Google Play store.

So performance-wise, it's really no better than running Retro-Pi on a Raspberry Pi. That's a lot of extra dosh to fork out just for some controls and Play Store access. Think I'll stick to my Pi and controllers, thanks all the same.

6:53 This fool complains about the PS's low-res graphics when you can easily notice he's not using any graphic filters. Does he even know these graphic options exist? PS1 games look great at x2 internal resolution and even better with the GL plugin, both of which the GPD XD can handle easily without any drop in framerate.

I'm sorry but you don't know what you're talking about. If you can set up an emulator properly it runs n64 games perfectly apart from a couple of games and the same applies to DC and PSP

Thanks for watching Lander. I agree I had partial success with these systems but not 100% like others. Goldeneye for example was not a good experience with any amount of configuration. Other games work just fine but you're flirting on the border of the hardware, the emulator optimization or both. On these systems success is on a game by game basis.

The PSP has fantastic PS1 emulation at top CPU speed of 333mhz, and we were emulating Mario64 on UltraHLE 18 years ago on Pentium 2's with a 3DFX card.... it's all about software optimisation

If you use Mupen64plus AE instead of the stock emulator it comes with, you get much much better performance, with even the original GPD XD running GoldenEye perfectly!

There was certainly slow down on the N64 but I completed that thing ten times over and lost years to multiplayer on it, so it was very playable on original hardware. On this it's far from it. It's a very good test for N64 emu's

Even on PC, Dreamcast, N64 and Saturn emulation is very hit and miss. There seems to be very little interest in developing proper emulation so most everything is still running via some icky hacks to make the most popular games work.

It's actually more due to how the actual hardware itself works. The N64 is full of bizzare magic, which makes it a right pain to properly emulate. Some games are unemulatable due to this; Star Wars: Rogue Squadron is an excellent arcade shooter that rewrites the microcode of the N64's CPU to get the most out of it. Nothing can correctly emulate this, since all the techniques used to emulate the host system at a reasonable speed break down violently.
