I bought one last year, after prevaricating over the cost for awhile. I'm a senior citizen female and where I used to have the strength to schlep stuff, no more not as much. So hydraulics and machines are my friend where they will help save my back and maybe help prevent an injury. Anyway, this portable winch has helped remove heavy log debris in my creek from above a problem culvert, and drag brush and firewood logs and rounds. There are so many possibilities. For me, this winch is much more versatile than a vehicle mounted winch. It also seems to be very well built.

Great idea making a skidding cone from a plastic barrel. I think i'm going to make one myself. The skidding cones you can buy here in Norway, cost about 2000 NOK, thats like 200 USD.

Ten upvotes for just the home-made logging cone alone. Best home-made cone I have yet seen. I do not know how it would hold up in our environment, but it looks perfectly suited for yours. Thanks for posting

Thanks for sharing you have convinced me going to get one, have a lot of logs needed pulled out a bad spot for a log cabin build really wet was waiting for the ground to freeze before driving tractor in there with the long rope could pull them right out to the tractor and save my tractor... thanks...

I had help taking a leaning tree that was threatening some bee hives. Tree was leaning at 45* angle and was held up by two small maples. A friend brought this winch over and I used my tractor winch. We pulled it uprightout of the maples with his winch and I used my tractor winch to pull it over to a safe place. I agree that the capstan winch was amazing and would be extremely useful if I didn’t have my tractor winch which is rated and has been used for 8000 lb. . It is a hell of a tool. Thanks for the idea of a plastic barrel nose cone. Great idea, I am on it!!!

Thanks for making this video. I'm looking at one of these capstan winches and saw the nose cone on their site. Some years ago I bought a plastic barrel in haste, when I got it home it had a chemical label on it so I couldn't use it for water. Now I'll be able to use it to make a nose cone!

John King Glad you enjoyed the video and are able to find a use for the barrel. It is always nice to be able to make something yourself and save the money! Good luck and God bless!

Spit my coffee everywhere when the dog sniffed the log’s butt ! Good boy. 600’ rope and a half dozen snatch blocks and you can safely triple the power of that unit. Actually a lot more than triple depending on how it’s rigged.

How did you get the front of that cone so tight? I was looking at those and found your diy solution. But I know those barrels are thick and stiff.

I think I would have just driven the truck a little closer then hooked up and backed it up. I like the cone though.

$1,500.00 for that winch but $150 for the cone was too much? lol I'm just a hobbyist. If I was doing this for a living, I guess that price tag would be Ok.

Hey Bill Thanks for the comment. We strive to save money wherever we can. I guess that would look funny to some, but we are willing to invest in equipment and tools we know we can’t make and that will make our efforts on the homestead easier and be an asset to us. When that video was created we did not own a 4 wheeler or any other equipment we could get deep into the wilderness to help us harvest trees, elk, etc. That $1500.00 investment has paid for itself over and over again in the last 7 years. The fact that we can put it on a pack frame and pack it into places only weighing 35 lbs makes life so much easier and enables us to be the wood snobs we are and get the good firewood that no one else can get. So net net it was one of our best investments here and so blessed and thankful to have it! Has even pulled a truck or two out of snowy ditches…. Definitely worth the investment! Blessings…

We were in that place for a long time too and have always chosen to be frugal. We were truly blessed to be able to purchase ours! We needed it for a job and incorporated it into the job or we would not have been able to afford it either! Use your hobbies and work to set yourself up. Blessings my friend.
