Gasoline Powered Portable Winch PCW5000 With Forestry Kit

This video is a look at my gasoline powered portable capstan winch. I bought this winch with the forestry kit to help me with firewood cutting. This winch weighs 16 kg / 35 lb. It is powered by a Honda gasoline engine and has a 1000 kg / 2200 lb pulling capacity. Good for bringing down hung-up trees, pulling out-of-reach logs, etc.

Cool device. I love seeing this kind of stuff because it makes you realize just how far we've come in terms of designing simple machines to do heavy lifting/pulling. But as you said, they certainly aren't cheap!

I can see the benefit of the capstan as to a spool cable you can pull one hell of a long rope, I really like that cap idea it must be much easier on the engine and quicker to pull a log.

Also helps keep the operator in a safe place, away from the load being moved.

Most of my videos are guns/shooting related. My old channel name was just "314299" (which is a Lyman Cast Bullet mold #), but Google/KZbin changed things with "Google Plus" so that a number only was not acceptable as a channel name, so I added "Shooting Channel" to my old channel name.

No, I've only used it for pulling logs.

Note to everyone: It Does work great, but it also is hard on oil, so check it every couple weeks, and you should be OK. I was quite frustrated with mine, but after checking online about Honda engines, the oil does break down. Very easy to change. Also get the extra pulleys , straps, spools, and heavy duty carabiners to lug up the really heavy trees. You might need 4-5 block and tackle pulleys to get the really thick trees to move. Don't go cheap.

What gear you need does depend on what sort of trees you are planning to move. Around here they are not too bigh for the most part.

I highly recommend Amsoil small engine oil. Not cheap, but it's night and day next to regular Walmart stuff. It significantly reduced oil consumption for me.

My truck is a two wheel drive so it does not go quite the same places as the famous "Chick Magnet". They use those winches on boats around here to pull lobster traps, as you say same principal.

What size rope will take up to?

According to the Portable Winch website the maximum diameter of rope for this machine is 13 m, with the recommended diameter being 12 mm.

We burnt out a rope trying to pull over a leaning tree with the winch

Anytime I put an excessive load on the machine I ended up stalling it, not burning the rope. Were you using the correct rope or just some regular rope? Regular twisted rope is not compatible with these machines.

The hook on the side is so you can stand to the side,NEVER stand in line with the pull, if something breaks you want to be in the clear.

If you use the proper line as supplied ("zero stretch" line, not braided) there is no significant energy stored in the line, if it breaks it will not snap back at you and there is no particular danger in standing behind the winch. If you are foolish and use regular braided rope (the winch manufacturer warns against using such rope) it will stretch and store considerable energy making anywhere in line with the rope dangerous in the event of a break.

It has a gasoline powered internal combustion engine so yes it would produce some of both. It is intended to be used outdoors, not in an enclosed space.
