I like your attitude when there are no contacts to be made. Working HF is not like VHF or UHF. Some is not always there to talk back to you. Yet you keep trying. Like Jerry mentions in his video this antenna is not his antenna, rather he made his antenna from Chapter 19 of the 22nd Edition of the Antenna Handbook. I made the same antenna in November 1986 because I forgot to bring an antenna with me when visiting my parents for Thanksgiving in GA. It wasn't my antenna. Great video. Get some Plasti-dip and spray your pick and pluck foam. It will stabilize the foam. This will make it more durable and not tear so easy. There is some videos here on KZbin about this.

Hi Mike, I made this antenna too after watching Jerry’s video. I used it with my KX2 and it tuned up 1:1 on all bands with the built in ATU, no counterpoise. I recently got a FT-817 with the Z17 tuner and tested it today........guess what, it tunes up on all bands (except 2/70), no counterpoise again . Give it a go mate👍🏻👍🏻

Wow, that's pretty crazy. I wouldn't imagine an internal tuner would be able to do all that. Good to know. I've used my external tuner to get on 40 and had some luck. I just hate having to carry another "thing". I'm looking at a vertical, probably a Wolf River Coil, to get multi band. I've used one once and really liked it. Plus they weigh next to nothing. Hi Mike, yep, got contacts into Europe on the KX2 on 40/20 with the internal ATU. Not been out up a ‘hill’ with the 817 yet, so hopefully that will perform just as well (it shouldn’t work on paper, but it does👍🏻). R11 88 OP'S M6OPV that would be awesome. I’ve never worked England (think that’s where you are). I’ve tried to hear Callum DX Commander when he did some live streams and that was a no go too. Signals just bounce over Michigan I guess. Would be sweet to have a speaker wire to speaker wire contact though. I haven’t worked Jerry either.

Yeah, that would be spot on. Especially if I was running QRP (that’s my thing). You mentioned the Wolf River Coil, look like a good setup, can’t buy them over here for some strange reason. I’ve also been looking at the Chameleon MPAS, but then again if you can spend a few quid on a bit of wire that will get you DX then it seems a bit silly to lash out big money for something to get the same results! Just a heads up... I have found several of the USB power converters from 12v offer a tremendous amount of RF noise and very broad in spectrum too. If you find a high noise floor, try disconecting the converter from power. 73s

@@lawrycain9739 Yeah I did about a week ago. It was an epic fail. I think because the antenna is a doublet the feedline needs to be longer and I didn't have it up that high either. The lowest swr I got was about 2.5:1 and the ohms were in the hundreds! Not good at all. Back to the drawing board on that one. I think I have a different idea though.

Mark Anderson I never take that box out anymore. It was a cool project when I was just starting portable operations but really isn’t that practical. I can fit everything I need in a tiny little bag from red rock outdoor gear. Sometimes I bring a bigger backpack though. Bags are just better I’ve found.

KG6HQD Jerry my elevation is about 980 feet above sea level. The only “summits” we have in Michigan are the man made ski “hills” where people who like being cold all day go play haha. There are plenty of state parks that would get me far enough from the city though.

Question on the 891 what’s the difference between HF SSB POWER AND HF POWER? When wanting to go true QRP do you lower just HF SSB POWER and leave HF POWER alone? I’m still learning my radio and haven’t went true qrp yet. 73’s

The SSB power is for Sideband, HF power is for CW and Digital. You can only go down to 5 watts (which is true QRP) but depending on which mode you're operating you will need to change the according power. Example I only do Phone (SSB) so I would turn the SSB power down. HF power wouldn't be affected unless I change the radio over to say CW, in which case that would still be on 100 watts unless I lowered that as well.

I check into the YL System daily on 14.332. It is a great bunch of people on there. I live in SW MN and find it interesting that on 20 meters I can hit the corners of the US but not the middle. That is the first time I have heard Leo. I started on POTA this past weekend as a hunter. I hope to become an activator using my mobile rig this summer. I have a question for you about power. POTA isn't really about rules so much as just getting out there and having fun. You can use as much power as you want, from whatever source you want. So long as you are inside the park, that's all that matters.

How'd you go with the cheapo USB charger (the 12v-5v bit, not the cable) and QRM. The one on my battery box just screams. Additionally, if you replace the Lead battery with a Lithium one, would you be able to run 50+ watts?

Way ahead of you. This was very early in my hf carreer. I've gone full on LiFePO4 for batteries and have built a couple solar generators and an awesome go box for my G90 you should check out. The USB chargers still produce all kinds of RFI, but only if I'm actually charging something.

There is one larger I believe. This is the 3800 case. The battery in this video was only used because I didn’t know about Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries yet. I would never recommend lead acid batteries. I use mostly Bioenno batteries for radio now. I have a couple home brew LiFePO4 batteries as well.

That seems waaaaay long. I think my final length is about 17"4" or so. Fold it back against itself and wrap the wire like a SOB before you cut it. 18' is def too long for 20 meters though.

I did make some dx qso's with the internal tuner.

Hi Carlos. I put 100 watts into it no problem. I think I’m using 18awg but I use 26awg with my PackTenna antennas 100 watts all the time. I think the feedline is about 17’ but I can’t remember and I don’t have the antenna anymore. I sent it to a buddy.

Well Tommy all I could think of was the Howard Sterns porn star trivia competition where when they lost they had to say "I'm dumber than a box of rocks" and I am laughing so hard right meow! Alright, take speaker wire, (the kind that is connected to each other, like + and - ) pull the two wires apart a bit. Like a couple inches. One will be your center. The other, your ground yes? (I'm typing this all in an English accent as I think). The center, stick through the center of your PL-259. The ground, (here's where it gets tricky) wrap around where you would either solder or crimp (I crimp) the ground. Then you have a connection to your radio. Genius if I do say so myself. If that doesn't help, give us a look up on QRZ, shoot me an email and I can send you some pics. 73

Hi Andrew, First off get that radio fired up! I can tell you I have never run out of power with that battery. I'm usually only out a couple hours at a time and running 5-10 watts. I don't use the Duracell anymore as I have built a 10ah LiFePO4 out of 4 38120 headway cells and a BMS to balance the charge between them. It is more expensive but they are an infinitely better solution. Julian OH8STN has done numerous videos on how to build them. Check out his channel and be prepared to soak in all the info. I've watched them about a half dozen times hihi! I did time how long the Duracell would last just on receive and I got over 5 hours before the voltage got around 11.5 when I shut it off. With the LiFePO4 I have called cq for about an hour and a half on 95 watts and still had plenty of juice to spare. In my second Michigan summits on the air video thats the battery I'm using. They can be drained about 80% until they get too low. Whatever you end up with will get you on the air though. Thats what counts most. As far as cost the Headway cells and BMS are going to cost in the $150 range plus you need a special charger. I picked one up for about $60. The Duracell cost about $40 and about $25 for a charger. You have to balance cost vs lifespan. The lithium batteries are rated for up to 2000 cycles where the AGM batteries are around 150 or so. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need anything else. Should really stop calling that antenna HQD's antenna, he did not come up with it, he did not change it, he simply read it out of the ARRL Antenna Book. You should be calling it the K1TD antenna, the one that first published it in QST in 1979. In the same sentence HQD states that he came up with the antenna and that he just read it out of the book but no one hears the second half of the sentence.

Tommy, I assure you I am the least smart guy on KZbin, and in no way was I making fun of you. I apologize if my response came across as anything but fun and light hearted. I am truly grateful for every single person who takes the time out of their day to watch one of my videos, let alone take the time to comment/ask a question. Having said that, I really did explain how to connect a pl-259 to a speaker wire in my (admittedly smart assed) response. I also welcomed you to look me up on QRZ and email me, as I don't have your call sign to look you up to email you, and I would gladly send you some pics as to how I made the connection. Yes it is a doublet so the twin lead does go from the feed point of the antenna to the radio. I don't use a tuner as I've cut the antenna to be resonant on the phone portion of the general band. In short, I put one wire through the center, and wrapped the other around the ground and crimped it. Much the same as how a PL-259 would be connected using regular coax.

Don't be so quick to discount what you have seen by your own personal lack of trust in a company. While we can all agree some of MFJ's products are less than stellar, rest assured my analyzer is true. I have made many a wire antenna with it, including my home fan dipole. Confirmed by the happy SWR readings on my radios. It's a keeper my friend.

I’ve finally replaced my 259 antenna analyzer with a Rig Expert 230 Stick. It was the light weight, fewer batteries and Bluetooth connection to my Android phone that convinced me. i used to NEVER keep a first aid kit with me then i somehow got a 4mm deep cut on my thigh kit was usless just buy a hospital an ya might be safe

Steri strips fit easily into a first aid kit and would have handled that 4mm cut until you could get to a hospital for stitches. My first aid kit is right up there with my antenna tuner in my mobile QRP kit. If experience is a good teacher then bad experience is a paid tutor. Learned my lesson. MikeinMinnesota N0WDM
