In this series, Trent Kaniuga showcases techniques for redesigning his favorite games of all time including Portal by Valve Software. This is not an official portal 3 concept design, this is merely a workshop detailing the thought process of a concept artist approaching a blue sky approach to designing characters for such a game as portal.

i know this isnt for a real game but what would be a cool way to find out that you can travel through time is, she goes to hop through a whole that she accidentally hops through a time whole.

Hey Trent. Huge fan and have been following you for a few years now. working my ass off daily, in order to grow as an artist and I try and get as much help and inspiration as possible, from my favourite artists as possible. Tat being said, I got to ask you about the possibillity of maybe splitting up your Gumroad packages up, so the price also would follow and go down with the amount of items in them. As much as I would love to, I sadly don't have 80 dollars, at any one time to spend art stuff, wich is annoying alot, as I would love to both support you, but also be able to study your stuff in more details, than it is possible in the speed-arts shown. Love your stuff and always looking forward to more!

Hello Trent Big fan of your work and i tend to re-listen/watch your videos while i draw. ive watched your sketchbook pro videos at least a dozen times cause thats currently the only drawing program i own :/. anyways i just wanted to say thank you for these videos, they've really helped me kinda get out of my bubble a little more. also i was wondering if you could try doing your own spin on one of my 2 favorite games, 'dark souls' or 'monster hunter'. id love to see a monster design from you in the would of dark souls. anyways thanks again, i really get a lot out of these videos and enjoy listening to them time and time again.

Trent, I seriously get inspired by your art style and watching your videos. I can't wait to get paid so I can get your boxes, I feel like I've learned a lot just by watching your narrated speed paints! BUT my main purpose of commenting was TO ASK ABOUT MAO'S VIDEO GAME! How is it coming along? I remember you speaking about using GameMaker and I think that engine would be suitable for what you'd want and I'm also working with that engine with a creator you mentioned, HeartBeast's tutorial. I would really like to hear how your game is coming though, I know you're a great story teller.

What's the difference between creating a concept piece for a high polish presentation and a concept piece that will be used by modelers for a game? What are some factors that need to be considered when the concept is going to be passed on to modelers? Thanks for your feedback. Your videos are awesome for learning how to approach concept art and pitfalls to avoid. Love your usage of color. :)

Hey Trent, I was watching this (actually very enlightening, thank you so much for it!) video and a couple of questions popped out into my mind. 1) About your visual brainstorming: I see you don't use the very-popular black-filled silhouette that you then sculpt blocking in planes etc - why is that? Is there any specific reason or it is just personal preference? 2) About your Portfolio Templates course: I'm working (first job, but not first project or completely new to the thing) in an Indie studio as a... well, all-round artist. We're literally three guys and I'm the only one with artistic competence whatsoever, and I'm supposed to create from concept art to finished, animated 3D models. I know how to do all these things, but I think the part I'm lacking in the most, is the 2D concept part. I can render stuff (besides, I love your style so much, it's hyper cool and functional, so don't say you're not an artist because hell yeah you ARE), I'm very creative etc... but I'm not sure how I should approach it to make the best of it. This course of yours (or another one, even if you use a different software I don't mind at all) can not only help me to understand how to build a good portfolio, but also give me an insight on how I should work?
@TrentKaniuga
@TrentKaniuga 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Fox. I change my process a lot. Sometimes I do the black filled sillhouette, and sometimes not. Your second question is a bit more general and I'm not sure how to answer. My portfolio workshop should show you how to make a better portfolio, and how to be more effective in a game development studio. Yes.
@FoxRedTail
@FoxRedTail 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Trent! Sorry for the confused question, I didn't know exactly how to ask it clearly and so I wrote a long and messed up message... I'm afraid I still have limitations in English! Anyway, you answered very clearly to what I wanted to know - I was pretty sure you course contained insights and indications on how to be more effective in a studio, but I wanted to check :) May I ask you if you change your process because of personal taste or in the way you think it will better fulfill the needs of the specific task? I change a lot my process too but it's only because I always like to try new things and looks to me like there are tons of different but equally valid ways to approach tasks... anyway, thank you very much for all your support! Your course is a must buy then!

How does one go about starting their own project? Do you have any advice for this? I've been wanting the make sort of a franchise of a video game with comics to go along with it since i was a kid, and i don't know where to start.

13:50. I didn't recognize it was a Chell, honestly, because she went from Latina to Asian.
@UltimateKyuubiFox
@UltimateKyuubiFox 7 жыл бұрын
Some key facial features are completely different, most notably the size of her lower lip and the shape of her eyebrows... And her nose... Granted, if she's just a composite body with Chell's consciousness, that can still make sense, but there's a noticeable difference if it's supposed to be a narrative gray-area.

I read a theory that she was part Japanese. There was some reference artwork that was of a latina soldier in the shot that might have been misleading, but it was just reference.

The art is more than great, but i kind of dislike most of the ideas. Only sharing my non-constructive comment
@TrentKaniuga
@TrentKaniuga 7 жыл бұрын
That would be exactly the purpose of doing a first sheet of designs, and its why its important to show the concept art community that not all ideas should get used from the first batch. Game development is an ongoing process of having your ideas rejected, over and over, until something sticks with the development team.
