Portal is more a thriller really, with the way it draws you into your progress throughout the test chambers and being congratulated and then slowly finding out how much your work wasn’t cared for and that you are seen as completely worthless and expendable to a company that’s main goal is to out do another one. The feeling you get of how alone and isolated you are in an industrial building mostly just seeing white and blue feels incredibly cold and artificial. The game mostly just tries to toy with your thoughts and expectations than actually scare you.

My feelings: Prodecural Jiggle Bone - kinda scary and disturbing, sounds like good theme for advanced, modern place. Fits perfectly with sounds of elevator and fluorescent lamps. Self Esteem Fund - makes you feel lonely. When I heard it for the first I thought about massive, modern, calm place with a lot of people, machines and SCIENCE. But that's wrong. There is no people. All rooms behind windows are empty. Everything seems abandoned but doesn't seem old. You feel lonely, there is a big world in front of you but you are trapped in this place with emotionless computer voice. Then you realize SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT. Self Esteem Fund feels like good, old, nostalgic years that passed away (2000s - 2019)

there's just something about this soundtrack that just strikes a certain primal chord with people.. with it fitting the theme of waking up, dazed and confused, in a cold sterile laboratory environment, no one else around, no way out, completely alone, with nothing by a synthesized voice telling you to perform a series of "tests" and guiding you through the series of rooms, all you have to get you through it all is an untested and dangerous wormhole gun, your wit, and your drive to get through to the end to have some delicious cake... portal has long sense buried itself deep within my soul and you could say it changed all who played it in a profound way, everything a video game should mean to the gamer and more. unique, surreal, avant-garde, and amazingly satisfying when you solve a puzzle. 5/5 for the game and soundtrack.

You could almost imagine the steady and subtle progression of the soundtrack as the gradual state of the outside world and what's going on out there. If we go by the time frame, Portal takes place just after the Combine have taken over, thanks to Breen surrendering Humanity to them, and the tone starts off as a false sense of sincerity and security, slowly breaks into a comforting dissonance, then isolation, calamity and a consuming existential void, but eventually it starts to get serious, darker and tense, to match the crisis going on outside the facility which GLaDOS is trying to prevent from breaching while trying to keep you away from her, along the way we slowly discover the facility is completely empty, all personnel absent, sentries are deployed to kill you as you reach deeper into the complex, going where you're not supposed to be, unaware that the world outside is being picked to the bone by aliens, Humanity is being enslaved, processed and controlled, brainwashed, the former administrator of Black Mesa is now the administrator of Earth, it's just a complete and utter hell for all, and the final moments are just complete and utter chaos, the impending sense of doom that hits when you realize GLaDOS was keeping the Combine out of the Enrichment Center, and you just destroyed her, giving them the chance to break in. And you glimpse the outside as you return to consciousness for a moment, the ultimate systems have crashed for good, but inevitably you are dragged back inside the facility and forced into cryogenic stasis, the quest for freedom is futile after all, but you could suppose that you're better off inside than outside.

Procedural Jiggle Bone also plays in Chambers 08 and 19, which I think is a great place to put them. Most notably at 0:45, this soundtrack gives off an eerie sense of apprehension and buildup. Chamber 08 introduces the acid floor, marking the change-up between tutorials and the real deal. With this soundtrack playing at Chamber 19 as you ride along that scaffold, you can just feel that something isn't right. What is there at the end of the test? I return regularly to this soundtrack and after a couple years of listening to it, I can proudly say that the Portal OST is probably one of the most unique and best soundtracks I have ever heard. In context to the game it is even more special. This is a puzzle game where you traverse the environment with portals and yet this soundtrack sounds like it could be the score for a very tragic cyberpunk, maybe posst apocalyptic world. Even though this is true to some degree, it feels to deep for a game with such a simple premise. Portal is a strange but godly combination at all fromts. No puzzle game ever had such great writing, such world building, such a soundtrack. All things that elevate it above and beyond the status of a cult classic the moment it released. This soundtrack gives me eerie vibes of beauty and horror I have never heard and/or expected from such a game. As someone in the comments said "Self-Esteem Fund is one of those songs I can't believe humans created" and I couldn't agree more. This is truely a game you only get once in every blue moon and I cherish it to death

Portal 2 is a comedy game, its tone is completely different from the first one, I do admit, I prefer Portal over Portal 2.

Portal 1 makes you think more about aperture than Portal 2. In Portal 1, you think about what the scientist were doing here, what the 7 hour war did to the place, and a lot of other things since a lot of Aperture's nature is left unknown. Whereas in Portal 2 they do to much explaining

Portal's original ost is more ambient- created with the sole purpose of expressing isolation. Portal 2 is more narrative. Its soundtrack is more expressive and includes things like character themes. I'm a huge fan of the leitmotifs in Portal 2. There's also the fact that they're both very different games story-wise. You can't really critically compare their soundtracks since they were created with different purposes. It's just up to taste, I guess.

Completely agree. I know I haven't heard every video game soundtrack out there, but this game's soundtrack is SO much better than every other video game I've ever played that it's hard to imagine there could be another game on Portal's level.

When many of us are working from home(alone in many cases) in these times, some of the tracks sums up the feeling of loneliness to the last letter. Its not all gloom and doom these have a calming effect.

Fun fact for a not so fun just sad and depressing soundtrack is that every song (if you can even call them that) are named after jokes and lines that GLADOS AKA Ellen McLain says during the game

i think Portal 2 really should've had more creepy moments like this. at times P2 feels almost separate from the first game, just atmospherically; i think the thing is, P2 feels alive... this game feels dead (in a good way). like nobody's there, just this soulless voice telling you to risk your life in these tests... it's so disturbing. i think the second game could've done something similar with the part when you're in the backup testing track

Me while beating chambers in Portal: Something is not right. This is puzzle game but everything seems abandoned. Am I supposed to BE here? Where did everyone go? Why music is so disturbing? Me when I go to fire: I KNEW SOMETHING IS WRONG I NEED TO ESCAPE!!! Me while hiding in old, rusty rooms: Damn, what happened here? This computer makes something evil... Where are people? These messages on walls... Me while final fight: COME HERE!!!

I thought this ost added to the atmosphere and especially later in the game with how the atmosphere gets creepier... Well... I liked how there was not much music in a lot of parts of the game to add a certain intensity you can't get with music to the atmosphere. It was not the scarriest game I have played, but some parts of the game made me feel scared a little. The robots were not creepy to me, except that red eye sphere at the end which was voiced by Mike Patton who is the man of a million voices in my mind hahhh. The last ending song he last ending credits song but the rest of the soundtrack L0L.

You know something interesting I've noticed? There was a poll on the Escapist, initiated very soon after Portal 2 came out, asking which Portal game people preferred. Roughly 80% of people voted for Portal 2, and 20% for Portal. A clear, large majority for Portal 2. Then I saw that there was another poll asking the same question, but this one was put up in 2014, years after Portal 2 was out. And this time, it was almost 50/50; I think it was roughly 53% for Portal 2 and 47% for Portal. Now, as someone who strongly prefers the first game, I thought this was interesting and it suggests that at first people preferred Portal 2 because they had just experienced it and were thinking about how much more stuff there was in it; after all, it is a much "bigger" game in a sense. But after that died down, maybe the more timeless genius of the first game started to show through more in comparison?

***** Better graphics, the fact that it's longer, and the fact that it has multiplayer are the only things you said that Portal 2 actually has over Portal 1. The characters, atmosphere, music, and combination of dark and humorous vibes (which really falls under atmosphere) are all so much better in the first game than the second that it boggles my mind to see someone say the opposite (especially with regards to the music).
