It's meant to be somewhat cryptic, but using context clues, one can get the main idea of their songs. Neurosis is intimidating but not nearly as horrific and cerebral as portal are. Portal genuinely feels like a supernatural entity at times despite most passive listeners chocking them up as “that creepy band” which is undermining their work too much, it’s silly to assume that portal’s just creepy and nothing more. Portal ranks among the greats like deathspell omega, ulcerate and vitriol simply for how extreme their concepts become in their minds, how their thoughts are the contents for their music to conduct into fruition, eliciting nearly paranormal energies with their art. I mean that so seriously, not necessarily in a “magical” sort of way but through a more inhuman connotation. It just doesn’t feel real what they guys have managed to create with their song craft. It’s not only impressive but just downright imposing and menacing.

Very rarely are bands able to successfully convey a certain atmosphere that matches both song-writing and looks / stage presence. Usually they'll have one without the other (Ghost B.C. comes to mind). Portal is one of those rare examples of attaining both successfully. Shit is downright scary.

Ghost fucking stole Portals theatrics... hence why Portal don’t play live anymore, they hate all the copycats.
