This run really makes me appreciate the massive difference between the earliest runs and now. The ones where it used to be just, 'Play the game really well.' Now, so much more is required. Not only better-than-perfect play, but deep intimate knowledge of how everything in the game actually works behind the scenes. It's like the difference between looking at a car and knowing it goes fast, versus knowing what every part in it does, so you understand exactly WHY it goes fast and how to push every single part to its limit. The EFFORT modern runners put in! WOW!

Wow this is insane, I have just recently played this game casually, had a lot of fun, went for the achievements and tried speedrunning it without looking up guides and runs first to get a bit familiar with the rooms on my own. Kinda eager to learn the actual run by looking up guides and I think this is the category (or the inbounds run) that interests me most, I'm not a fan of save/load kinda stuff) and at least this one doesn't allow the backwards jumping acceleration. I just want to play the puzzles as intended. Crazy gameplay, so fast and there are some "wtf, that's a clever solution" moments during this run. Pretty impressed and eager to learn from this run. Just a question though? What happens at the start of room 19. As a casual player only, I'm not quite familiar with the advanced starts and since this is a glitchless run with a competitive scene, it's prolly not considered a glitch, but the part at 10:12, I don't understand on how you're not falling down even if you're sideways at some spots? Had to look at it in 0,25 speed to witness what happened. Cause that's like a big skip :o crazy!

I just played this game for the first time today and beat it in a few sessions. I go to watch the tas, 13:30. Okay that’s pretty fast, a human could probably do it 4-5 minutes slower…. 1 minute behind. Jesus that is rare. Not sure how the timer on the right side works but does someone know why PB and Best keep changing? EDIT: Did some digging and it's for the splits, also learned that speedrunners use hotkeys for this... I always though it was automated by a mod of some kind. This just makes it more impressive IMO.

Most popular pc games splitting is automated by a plugin, for portal it also makes timing accurate to the game ticks. Pretty much no one splits manually in this game except if a console runner is using splits.

@@FSMusicLTD That's true. What i do is not wasting time killing the turrets and i skip activating the platform with the energy ball. It took me a few tries but now i can do it without being killed (most of the times). I don´t have a video to show you, i just learned by myself.

if you mean the chamber at 2:01 nothing is being skipped or sped up here with the elevator, i just have the dialogue muted. the maps are smart enough to play at the same speed even if the dialogue files were missing entirely

You have to remove the voice lines from the sound folder (aperture_ai). It only works that way on older versions of the game otherwise you need to do some file unpacking for it to work.

I have to disagree. Personally I mostly enjoyed Portal because of how GLaDOS reacts to the player making progress. Because of that, the custom levels where she's absent feel cold and boring to me, as does speedrunning. Sure, it's interesting to watch but I can't imagine enjoying actually playing the game like this...
