Great video and technique! One question. Some reviews on Amazon talk about the white wall turning brown in a few months, AND not being able to be cleaned. Have you experienced this? I use Bleach White cleaner. The original Porter wall from years ago stated on its box, that the white wall not turning brown, so I'm wondering if the new material of today is inferior in that way.
@hotrodswoodshed7405 Жыл бұрын
My experience is the brown is NOT on the surface only. The brown staining permeates all the way through... I read that it is a chemical reaction to a particular substance used in tire manufacturing... some don't have it. Some do.

So do some portawalls turn to brown & others dont? If so, how long do they stay white? @@hotrodswoodshed7405
@chaselentz8738 Жыл бұрын
Do you find these stay on the tires at highway speeds? Like 70 MPH. I need to buy new rear tires for the back of my '32. Coker/Firestone has now jacked the price up for a 7.5-16 whitewall to $415. Absolutely criminal in my opinion and I will not be buying any more. I've found some decent vintage-ish looking tires for reasonable prices but they're all blackwall tires. It's either going to be blackwalls or blackwalls with some of these portawalls.
@hotrodswoodshed7405 Жыл бұрын
Yes... my experience they stay on at 70mph. A few instances I hit 80mph. But I'd suggest to make SURE they are adequately seated for such hiway speeds. I had a 15 inch set... and they remained seated... but eventually after about 15k miles, centrifugal force got the best of THAT set , as they tore away... leaving the bead portion still seated. On this particular set, the black tire rubber slowly stained these as well, starting with the edges. Eventually they looked very dirty brown'ish... as there seems to be some kinda reaction from black tire rubber. But not all tires seem to leach their black as these did. I've never seen that before my experience. As for a $415'ish tire... it TRULY IS criminal! You are correct

Great video thanks,how many inch are those? I want to put 3” but herd 2 “ is the best size to lay right. Is that true?
@hotrodswoodshed74053 жыл бұрын
i can't claim to know everything...it's ultimately up to your preference...but i can say it seems the narrow ones...like 2 inches will lay flat easier than the wide ones. mine are 2 inch. but i need to Make a correction in my video. As it turns out the new white walls I have installed are turning Brown just like the old ones. that did NOT happen on my previous set of tires... so it must be something about these new ones. as it turns out...i no longer feel the browning was caused by anything the installers did on those previous white wall toppers.

Thanks much for this! Looking at doing this on my 15" trailer tires. Tire store put them on, and the looked flat on tire, but they showed me that it was having small leak with soap bubble test. They admitted to have never seen these before. So I had them take them off. I've seen other recommendations to use a bead sealer- doesn't look like you did - any reason or experience? This video is giving me some motivation that I might try it again and get my white wall look back that we so loved on the original tires that came with the retro camper, but were we replaced with better quality blackwalls.
@hotrodswoodshed74052 жыл бұрын
According to what I've read is that any sort of liquid bead sealer will create a lubrication aspect when installing and They need dry rubber to create friction in order to hold the lip inside the bead, Also I suspect any sort of adhesive or sealer will do nothing more than create a mess at the very least

@@hotrodswoodshed7405 I keep trying to reply, but somehow KZbin keeps deleting my replies. Not sure what I'm violating. Thank you though. I do know that the video that the Port-A-Wall folks post on their web page as an installation video the guy there recommends using the bead sealer. I think maybe my comments are being deleted because I was posting a link to that, so I guess you'll just have to look it up yourself in the hopes that my comments won't be removed. Ugh. Thanks though for your real life perspective and a solution that is working for you. Looking forward to trying it again.
