This is my dad's Johnson 115 that we had to replace the block so we bought a new one but the guy screwed us over and sold us an 88 but its OK everything was the same except for the intake and exhaust ports for the cylinders so we ate away at those to the max size possible surpassing the 115 size right now we have the top speed at 46mph gps with the 115 carbs we are trying to get better carbs for 50+ mph
boat is a sunbird 173cc seacore 17'3"
current crank hp around 130

I havean 88 challenger fish and ski with a 120hp Evinrude, the speedometer shows 52mph at 5800rpm, but I need to get a GPS speed. Its definitely fast and hops on plane quick

I have a1997 Evinrude 115 on a 17 ft Sea Hunt. Very similar boat and motor, but I don't think I can get to 46 mph. What have you done to your motor? Any tips or links to info would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to keep my boat going for many more years.

Sorry for responding 2 weeks late busy working on my car, Basically what we did to the motor was replaced the 115 block because a cylinder wall got scored beyond recognition. knowing that all 88-140 hp crossflow blocks are basically the same we bought a 88 hp block. But we did not know that the 88 hp block had smaller intake and exhaust ports for the combustion chamber. once we realized this we opened up the intake port past a 140hp crossflow we also opened the exhaust port up but not as much.

On a 17 whaler mounting motor 2 holes up drastically improves performance . Maybe would help your rig ?

Then we used the 115 hp carburator size jets. after we broke it in we got a top speed of 49 MPH with just me weighing ~160 pounds and 6 gallons of gas with approximatley 100 pounds of gear. @ 6000rpm with a 13 7/8" X 19 propeller. Also we opened the port Up twords the piston heads and to the sides not down.

Nice runner, I believe you're over revving at 6000rpm however. 5500 is what Evinrude and Johnson say is the max. My 115 Evinrude was propped for 5700 and I was told I was over the mark by my master Evinrude mechanic. Strong motor you have here however.

yes. they are on bottom of the exhaust cover. it's the rectangle thing with a rubber hose on either side going into the bottom of the cylinder heads.

you will never make a 88 into a 140, that is not going to happen without a lot of specialist machine work, a good bit of welding and a lot of extra parts, also remember it depends on the year of the 88 as it might even have smaller bores !!! but this sounds like its going realy well and certainly not a slow boat by a long way.... that water your running in is filthy.
@AtiFanBoy5770
@AtiFanBoy5770 7 жыл бұрын
We machined the intake and exhaust ports and did fab work on the exhaust side, The 88 has the same size pistons as a 115 and 140 crossflow.
@ct1762

no. all 88's are the same size bore as the higher hp v4's. you are getting confused with the older 1980 and earlier 85hp motors.

@@ct1762 I am presently restoring a 1980 115HP V4, the powerhead is getting re-bored and I'm putting Wiseco .30 pistons. Is putting 140 high speed jets and CCMS Reeds with Intake Stuffer worth it and will get me more power on my 115?
@ct1762
@ct1762 4 жыл бұрын
@@VWAlexo i'm not sure what size the 140 orifices are, but you would want to only go up a size or 2 on them. some of the 140 jets were 10 sizes bigger than the 115! the reed stuffers seem to increase throttle response and torque... nothing drastic but i can notice it for sure. combined with the .30 larger bore, you should be in great shape! just make sure the cylinders aren't out of round more than .0005'' or you will get problems down the road, and the cooling system is in good shape. i like to tap the block top starboard side to burp all the air out for the indicator hose as the water has trouble reaching that side at slow speeds and tends to run much warmer than port.
