One of the best explanations I've heard on the diff's between horn loaded enclosure and ported bass reflex enclosure. I salute you sir!
@csj96193 жыл бұрын
You explained both enclosures not only accurately, but simply and concisely. (Moreso than anyone else I've heard) There's so much bad info, inflated specs and misinformed people in car audio, that hearing someone knowledgeable discourse on the subject is refreshing. Nice craftsmanship too, btw.

Cerwin Vega has a ton of horn designs online. They made a bunch for movie theatres while pioneering subwoofers for the first time. They did this for the movie earthquake in the 70s. The theatres back then didn't have subwoofers and Cerwin Vega made thousands of subwoofers with boxes and delivered with those Earthquake films.

First off this is the best channel yet about enclosures I've encountered and delivery of ideas. 💯 Good. I just bought three 12-in stereo integrity SQL 12 s and I'm going with a horn loaded front firing sealed off from trunk enclosure that faces the 3 12s like this if you were looking at them overhead \_/. The chamber they're firing into is MDF on top and bottom of these three enclosures, reinforced. Each sealed in .8 cubic feet for a QTC that's tight and accurate. I was going to go with a front firing sealed off from trunk ported enclosure, with the aero ports ran up through the rear deck loading onto the glass. However,I've always preferred that thump and projection ability with accuracy that the horn produces.

I have a 4.7 cube box with 100 sq. inches of port area for a single 12". It was an experiment and worked quite well. Thanks for the explanation. I am planning on a box experiment using the principles of a "loading wall" and kind of a horn too for a more venue/stage show oriented subwoofer box.

You explained this so well, I can tell you know a lot because you dumbed it down and it actually made sense! Most people seem like they are proving they are experts rather than teaching the target audience at the audience's level. Those boxes look great too.... nice smooth corners

Thanks man. I learned a lot today and opened my mind to bigger and better builds. I love sq that still can do 50s and 60s on the meter. I want to try doing a horn with the new solo x pro kicker l7x 15" or even 18 if they ever get them out and build a folded horn enclosure in the back of a jeep. Loud, efficient and clean!.

this man knows his design criteria, If you build with Baltic Birch (yes more expensive ply) they will not need as much bracing and you will find you can use thinner ply with the same cabinet stiffness. Charge more for a better product. Your explanation is spot on and the language is suitable for most lay people who don't build speakers from scratch. :) Excellent video and boxes. Nice double baffle on the 8" box good job.

Often double 18s nowadays because you can pack more in a lorry. If you need to drive 2 lorries to get the same output from horn subwoofers, then any efficiency gains are negated by the inefficiencies of 2 trucks vs one. If the venue has a low power supply and the subwoofers can be permanently installed, then you get more out of the horns, and spend less on drivers, though more on cabinet woodwork. Double 18s are good at concentrating bass for space, though Danley Tapped horns are probably doing even better nowadays. I've also found 6th order can gain quite a bit in the upper passband for only being 50% larger than a vented box, and that's without increasing the amp power. I did my birthday party in a village hall and had substantial output from 2 12" subwoofers on 600 watts though only turned up about "40% loudness" which actually gives not 240 watts but just 30, for you need disproportionately more power to get slightly louder, psychologically speaking. By placing them both side by side and facing into a corner at close proximity - far more than I would have had placing one in front of each mid/high stand on the same amplifier. The rig fitted in a Citroen C2 and slammed and got pretty low too.

So a horn port for 2/8 will make it sound like a pair of 12s a single 12 a single 15 what would you rate it as soundwise instead of a regular port ? Curious because I have four American Bass vfl 8's and I'm wondering if it'll sound louder or just as loud as 2 15's in a horn box versus a normal ported box

It would be nice to see a graph comparing the two. I use WINISD a lot but I don't recall it having an option for horn loaded woofers. I dont know of any that does? so what is the best type of speaker for a horn loaded woofer? would it be one that also works for an open baffle?

BudgetBassHead did a video that displayed a 5th order enclosure. You made a very useful point about ported boxes controlling woofer excursion using tuning. Would you consider it reasonable to use the port cross section to make a horn based on the port instead of the driver?

Could you build a box for 1 DC audio xl 10 dual 2 ohm? Can’t find specific specs for port area. Specs for box volume say 1 cu ft ported. I’ve heard this sub likes a lot of port. I emailed dc audio for more specs about an aero port and all they told me was a 4” port tuned at 34-35hz. I’m not opposed to going with a slot port, it’s in a box right now 1 cu ft with 14” of port area kerf ported, and there’s definitely some port noise. Let me know. Thanks for your time and keep up the great videos and information.

where can i get a cut sheet for horn enclosure for L7 15?
@fishrrelaxing93612 жыл бұрын
Ok question though.. because of the lack of back pressure doesn’t it limit the power handling of the sub? In a simplistic form it’s more like a free air in these terms. I’ve never messed around with horns but it would seem to me that you would want the resonance wall as close to the back of the speakers as possible wo loosing cooling so that you can maintain responsiveness of said speaker on kick drum bass as well adding whatever momentary back pressure you can to keep the speaker from bottoming out.. I’m I correct in this thinking?
@Jamez842 жыл бұрын
No, subs won't act like a free air in a folded horn design. A good way to describe it is a ported box where the ports long and narrows the closer to the woofer it gets. One of the biggest concepts in a folded horn design is that as the air get closer to the speaker in the port. The port size reduces increasing the air velocity, this increase in airspeed and is what makes the speaker efficiency increase. Just like a ported box, folded horns are usually tuned to the subs FS. But they will give you a frequency response more like a sealed box, but louder and more efficient. A good example of a horn design with little input and lots of output is the Tuba.
