Thank you Michael. Super fix, it saved my hurting brain and it leaves the compressor better than new with metal parts in place rather than the plastic that gave way. MacGyver would be proud of you.

Thanks, great fix. I found that an 11/16 OD flat rubber sink washer to be a perfect fit into the circular depression where the plastic piece broke out, eliminated the need for the epoxy,

Thank you Michael, Great fix since I couldn't find any OEM parts for my Porter Cable Pancake Compressor C2002 "Type 4" compressor. After trying to purchase an OEM Type 4 repair kit for any amount of money, I gave your idea a try. First try failed after using a nut and bolt that was too large to fit inside the handle spring, second try using a smaller bolt and nut fitting inside the spring allowed me to get the cap on without issue. Finding a slight leak I used a glue gun to seal in the same locations as the video. I like like the idea seen below of using a 11/16" O.D. flat rubber sink washer but didn't read that review until I was completed. Re-assembled and installed, now the compressor works great and has no leaks.

Thanks Michael. This video was immensely helpful. I used what I already had laying around my workshop, so the repair was free. Instead of the epoxy, I got lucky and found a grommet that was a snug fit in the hole. I tightened everything down, and it works like a charm. It took me longer to source everything from odds and ends in my workshop than it did to make the actual repair. Thanks again.

I can't believe it...but this actually worked! I didn't even have to use glue to get a seal. I just took the o-ring off the nub that broke off and put it on the bolt to make a seal. Thanks for saving me time, money, and allowing me to finish my job tonight instead of next week.

This ingenious little fix worked on mine. I have had mine for about 5 years so I guess I am lucky it hasn't broken before now. I did not use a sealer but may take it back apart and use some or an O-ring because I do have a small leak. Porter-Cable should have addressed this issue a long time ago. The aftermarket business is probably a good money maker for them. Thanks for the great video Michael.

Hi Michael, Thank you for your video. It saved me both time and money. I've had my C2002 (3) piece combo kit for about two years but I had never taken it out of the box. I Finally got a chance to use it last week. I took it out of the box, read the instructions, set it up, turned it on, filled it with air, hooked up the hose to one of the nailers, turned the regulator knob, and nothing. No air pressure to the tool. ZERO. That's when I headed to KZbin and after watching a few other "fix it" videos I ran across yours and it was the perfect solution. Better than trying to glue the part back together and definitely better than spending $25 on the repair kit just to get that plastic replacement part. I followed your instructions (already had the nuts, washers, and screw) and I was up & running in less than 15 minutes. Thanks again!

Finally got to use mine also. Unlike most other C2002 owners, my compressor came out of the box already broken so I was very upset. Glad I was able to fix it for FREE. On a slightly different subject -- since we both own the same compressor, I wonder if you would answer a question about the air hose. My unit came with the standard 25" foot 1/4" hose. Do you know if I can use a standard 3/8" air hose with this compressor if I use the same 1/4" size fittings that came with the compressor?

I have the identical compressor and ran into the same problem. The knob on mine had stripped and the plastic plunger had cracked. I followed your fix and substituted an RTV coated bolt for the broken plunger, which resolved the leak issue. The type 3 knob on mine is obsolete - offerings on ebay are cylindrical and not cone shaped. I shortened the regulator spring, which allowed use of the unstripped threads further back in the knob. Then I coated the inside of the knob with super glue gel. I reinstalled the knob and let dry. Afterwards I backed the knob out with channel locks, which effectively cut new threads.

Thanks for a great video. My problem was the air was leaking out the front of the regulator past the knob that you screw in and out to adjust output pressure. I took it apart and found that the little valve in the back that the plastic disc pushes on was stuck. I pushed on it a couple of times with a screw driver and it popped free. Added a little light oil and put together and works great.

Mike, that was a great fix and video you developed. Once again, we are bitten by crappy plastic junk, probably made in China from recycled plastic scrap that we sell to them. Soooo may times when I have a broken part on my cars, RV, etc. 90% of the time it is made of plastic. I am very willing to pay extra for metal parts. I hate plastic!

Mine must be an older model, it didn't break. However it did hang up, only letting partial pressure by turning the knob. What I did was apply a dab of white lithium berring grease and its back in action. Be sure to bleed down the tank or stuff will fly out under pressure at a very high rate of speed. And do not look up the valve taking it apart not without safety glasses and a face shield. Or you'll suffer serious injury or put at eye out.

Michael you are the best. I did a test run, and now I am waiting for epoxy to dry. On my c2002 compressor cuts out at about 160psi. I measured the time and in exactly 45minutes tank pressure down to 90psi. I checked all the threaded nipples for a leak and could not find one. Is this normal for this compressor, and if not what do you suggest I check next? Your tutorial skills are superb, and the photography clear and concise. Thank you for a most informative production!!! Have not "sealed" it up yet, just wanted to see if it would work and it does. I do have a BIG question for any one with this unit. I noticed that the hose on the left that comes out of the head unit and goes into the tank gets real hot. Like almost to hot to touch. Is that normal on this unit? Or is there something else wrong? Any one know? Any ideas? Thank you all for your time.

there is a hole in the center (with o-ring to engage valve rod) it bleeds off excess air while regulating lower pressure. This regulator will not function as designed wth your recommended repair as it eliminates this necessary orifice.

Can't remember off hand, but might have taken a wood screw or drywall screw and put it through the hole and tilted it to get some grip and pulled. it was either that or a paper clip and bent one end to make shift a hook to kinda put through the hold and pull it out. Hope one of those works for you.

Michael, sure was glad to find your video! My son's Porter Cable has exactly this problem... so it's mine to repair. : >) I don't claim to know how the regulator works, but the plastic piece that breaks off has a pilot hole through its center. Looks like it's intended to provide some air into the front chamber, maybe when the adjustment knob is backed out. Obviously the screw doesn't do that, so wondered - If the plastic piece is sealed tight, did it still regulate normally? Thanks for any insight!
@mbakker1969
@mbakker1969 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Paul. Mine didn't seem to have any pilot hole through the center. From the looks that mine had, no air should be going out to the front chamber. If it did, the air pressure wouldn't hold in my opinion. You can test it out pretty simply without using any epoxy. You can also use a rubber washer under the nut instead as others have done with success without using epoxy. I would give it a try and see if it fixes the situation. I did that as I didn't have anything to lose trying it out. Hope the fix works for you. Michael

Been awhile since I've been on, sorry I missed this. don't know how yours broke off, but i used a small needle nosed pliers to get it out. If it's stuck in and nothing to grab onto, you can find a screw or something to poke into the center and try to put pressure on the sides as you try to pull it out. Good luck!

@@mbakker1969 I got the small round plastic piece out now trying to get the cover over regulator to come off. My compressor does not seem to have a small screw down in there holding it on. But can't get the cover to pop off. Tried a screw driver, allen wrench & prying from under the cover. I spent all of 54 cents to fix the regulator but there seems to be some air leakage from somewhere under the cover. Will try again later this week.

Thank you Michael, would it be to much if you could give me the dimensions of the metal screw. I didn't catch the size, 1" or 2".
@mbakker1969
@mbakker1969 6 жыл бұрын
I don't know the exact length of the screw/bolt. It was an inch or under for sure. I just pulled a screw and some bolts from all my junk and put this together. I would say an inch is about right. 2" would be to much.

Do you remember the size of the screw/nut assembly? I've got to try this. Thanks

Honestly I don't. I took what I had on hand in bowl of unused bolts, nuts and washers and put this together. The bolt was maybe 1" long and thin to replicate the piece that broke off. I don't know the size though, but I would guess in the 2mm to 3mm range with the appropriate nuts. If US sizes, then maybe a #3 or #4. Hope that helps.

How did you get the plastic piece out mine won't come out
@mbakker1969
@mbakker1969 6 жыл бұрын
You may have to get a small pliers or if the center of the piece is already popped out, you can use a metal hanger and bend it to go through the center to pull it out. It was a little hard to get out, but you should be able to get it out.

after apply this fix, the pressure can only go up but won't go down. It that normal?
@mbakker1969
@mbakker1969 3 жыл бұрын
it should go up and down depending on how far you adjust the dial/knob. If you have it on too tight it will be set for a high presure.

@@mbakker1969 I notice that the original plastic pin that was broken has a small air release hole in the middle. This hole allow the air to release when you un-tight the knob (so the pressure can go down??). Or May be I don't have the correct screw size......

Do you think Goop would work?
@mbakker1969
@mbakker1969 7 жыл бұрын
John Puccetti, wouldn't hurt to try it. I looked it up and it looks ok. There is a lot of pressure there so that is why I used epoxy - but goop may work just as well. You are just trying to close any micro gaps where air would get through.

It's always a pisser when for 20 cents u could buy the little part new, but hell no. They want you to spend 60 bucks for a whole new regulator and hose attachments manifold. Disgusting.

Go look on Dewalt's factory repair page you can buy the parts they cost 1.80 its the 7 bucks for shipping and 3-5 day wait. I just placed an order for the parts but Mine didn't break like his did I have to rebuild the regulator. Also Amazon has them for 33 bucks. These are cake to fix.
