2 months late,but I’m in South Texas ,but here in Texas the majority of us our Catholics. I grew up Catholic. We baptize babies my baptism was when I was 4 months old and my first communion was when I was 9 years old and I recently got confirmed. My confirmation was on June 7,2023 so last month ( I’m 18 now) I did my 3 sacraments of initiation 9 years apart from each other

Yes. Jared and I were companions as we served as missionaries in Finland. :) Julie's parents joined the baptism services digitally. Thank goodness for technology. That is such a wonderful idea to add Porter's name to his scriptures. As far as the book goes, Julie puts in a lot of work compiling pictures. Then we use a photobook service like shutterfly or chatbooks to compile and print it. It's a really fun way to capture their life and have a guestbook for people to sign. :) Hope that answers most of your questions. :)

Hi Deru family. I’m a silent viewer but this feels like an appropriate time to comment. I’m from the UK, so the LDS churches (or temples ?) here are few and far between. To my knowledge they do exist but I have never met a person who is of LDS faith! How come the large majority of LDS members seem to live in Utah? Is it frowned upon to live in Utah and not be LDS? I really admire your family and faith and I like that you appear to teach love and not judgement. You have raised your children so beautifully and I enjoy that you incorporate your religion into the vlogs to show that aspect of your life without pushing an agenda. I’m a little lost with my personal religion, I feel that I can’t conform to any one religion in particular as I don’t always agree with ALL of the teachings. I believe in a higher power that is all loving, not DESPITE but REGARDLESS. It’s hard as LDS sounds like a beautiful faith but it isn’t common here in the UK, and unfortunately there seems to be negative interpretations of LDS/Mormon members across social media and documentaries etc. I know there are extremist groups in many religions, it’s just unfortunate that LDS has somewhat gained a negative reputation at times because of that. I think you should be so proud of how you incorporate the gospel and teachings into your daily life as a family. Your actions speak louder than words and I think that’s beautiful and something that is so important. You don’t necessarily preach the gospel, or discuss how you always go to Church, but you do give everyone you come across respect and grace and you’re always giving back. Don’t lose that🥰

Thank you so much for your sweet and candid comment. The LDS church is strong in and around Utah simply because many members of our church were some of the first to live here. They came here to escape persecution in search of a place to worship peacefully. Since then, it has spread to the entire world. There are two temples in England. One near London (in Lingfield) and another near Preston. There are churches and congregations all over England, so I hope you get a chance to see and/or visit one someday. At the end of the day, we try to live what we believe. This includes raising our family to be close to God and to each other, and it includes respecting others, their choices, and their views/opinions. It sounds like we are very similar in those aspects. :) Thanks again! Hope to hear from you more often.

No one is forced to be baptized. It is a choice. IF a child chose not to be baptized I would be sad (understandably because it’s what we feel so strongly about) but, I would still love them unconditionally.

Do they offer a baptism class at your church or did you read baptism scriptures at home as he was nearing 8? Just interested to see his thought process! I also just made your protein balls!

Glad you made the protein balls :) There is no specific class he attends. He has been going to church since he was born and with that includes a primary class where it teaches the basic principles. At home, we read scriptures and have lessons and talk about the things we believe. Landon does a great job asking the kids questions and talking to them in a way they can easily understand. There is also a book the missionaries use to help teach and we will read that to the kids. I will link it here. The most important thing we try and teach out kids is to pray to Heavenly Father. In many churches, people are either briefly immersed in a special baptismal font or in a river, lake or sea. This ritual is called „baptism“. It symbolizes that the person, who is getting baptized, has decided to live their live with Jesus. In some churches, newborn babies are also baptized. However, this does not symbolize a decision for Jesus (after all, the babies are still too small for that), but rather symbolizes that God is blessing this child. And of course the babies are not immersed, but have a little water sprinkled on their heads. I hope I was able to help you ☺️

Thanks for your genuine curiosity and questions. We are Christians and believe that Jesus Christ is our Savior. We believe in the Bible and follow its teachings, including that of building and worshiping in temples. Allow me to explain the differences between our church buildings and our temples. Churches are where Sunday worship services, youth gatherings, extracurricular activities, service projects, and other community events take place. All are welcome to join in these activities. Temples have a more specific purpose. They are places specially set apart for sacred services and ceremonies. Baptism (like you saw in our video with Porter) is the first of several covenants (promises) we can make with God. Other covenants are made with God in the temple including marriage and promises to live God's commandments. Because these promises with God are sacred to us, only people who are ready and willing to make these promises go there. I hope that helps.

No child who was brought up in a particular religion would say no at age 8 (or very very few for that matter). I was raised Catholic and at 8, when I had my first Communion it would have never crossed my mind to refuse that rite of passage, yet I understood the significance of it. In the Catholic church and the Lutheran church there is the sacrament of confirmation which completes the baptism process at the ages 14-16. Personally in my family this was left up to my personal decision whether I wanted to be confirmed or not, and while I decided in favour and still do not regret this 10 years later I am conscious of having been influenced towards making this decision by my upbringing. There is nothing bad about raising your children with your personal values because that is what all parents do, yet I find it important to make sure the child does not feel pressured into a certain decision or lifestyle once they get to an age where they (need to) decide for themselves, which is arguably a tricky balance between positive influence and exerting too much control.
