My mom died when I was a teenager and I’ve had survivor’s guilt ever since. Sometimes it’s hard to see the good in things. Sometimes the responsibility of having to live for those who couldn’t can be crushing. This song is the opposite of that feeling. Thank you for making it.

My mom also died when I was 13, and I relate 100%. :( I was born 3 months early, she worked so hard to have me, it's not fair she needed a heart transplant when I was 3 and spent the next 10 years constantly ill. I think it really upset her that she couldn't be the kind of mother she wanted to be for me. I've always asked myself "why couldn't it be me?" But in the end, I know she loved me and despite my struggles with depression and the weight of expectation I put on myself, I think she'd want me to live my best life and find lasting happiness. I hope the same for you. Keep looking at the sky.

The first thing I noticed about the "ghosts" is that they look eerily reminiscent of the entity in his "Language" video. They lean toward him while he's at the computer, always expecting something similar to a song that pretty much launched his career. And in turn, Porter put too much weight of expectation on himself to do the same. Maybe he even considered having some work ghost produced because it was a lot of pressure. Then something in him says "no, I can totally do this, people love when I connect with them and emotion is my strongest suit", so he looks back at the sky and the answer comes.

i like how this new album is sounding and looking so far, it feels more like it focuses on facing the real world rather than trying to escape it like Worlds did, like what i mean is that Porter's work always felt kinda otherworldly and surreal while this is way more different, you can just feel it in the lyrics or the music videos, he talks about mental health, the videos are more irl and totally different from the older stuff, i don't know if someone knows what i mean but i love the turn this is taking, so excited for Nurture

In the description he mentioned that as an artist we are never really work alone, take for an example the computer he uses and the pack, the vst ( sounds ), the daw (fruity loops) he uses made by another person so essentially it's a collaborative effort, these ghosts for me is those other people and strangers, porter doesnt necessarily know them directly but they're there to help porter craft his music, more examples shown in the acoustic guitar part where it's actually the ghost playing it for him, the actual acoustic guitar part is played by Yvette Young. This MV isnt really an visual representation of the lyric but extending his meaning to " i'll be alive next year " , in the end he beome part of the ghost and it means his work will also be a part of other people work in the future, he mentioned this cycle is like everyone crafting a tapestry together, and his work will outlast his live. So he will be alive next year through his work he put to the world.

"Sometimes when making music or art, we can think of ourselves as working alone. But that isn't ever really the case -- if I think about it, if I was raised in total isolation without exposure to culture, I would never have come up with any of the concepts of harmony, rhythm, twelve notes in a scale, the idea of chords, the idea of melody, the concept of a 'chorus' or 'verse' or 'drum' -- much less would I be able to physically build an instrument, build a computer, or write music production software. Everything we create is, in essence, a collaboration with millions of strangers. And by creating and sharing our ideas, we're afforded the gift of being able to contribute to this legacy. I think of the story of human creativity as this beautiful tapestry that each of us is given the very very brief opportunity to sew our own patch onto. " -Porter Robinson

i'm 22, chronically ill, and have felt the weight of childhood trauma on my shoulders since i was 4. After 15 years of therapy and many nights screaming at myself i've finally given myself the compassion and grace everyone else had years ago. there are still hellish days, but on those days i wrap myself up in a weighted blanket, my dog in my lap, and scream out the chorus to this song regardless of who's home. i've been blessed to be alive even after all these horrific things happened to me. i can make something good. i'm writing a series of letters to my younger self at all the points i was angry and judgemental towards myself. I hope to fill them with all the validation and understanding my younger self needed, and publish them one day in a book. I have other ideas too, for pieces of art and for stories i want to write. Things i want to create because porter created all this beautiful music for me and others to listen to. Your impact will forever be eternal and bright Porter, i hope you know that.

Last year my dad passed away in the middle of the pandemic after a long illness. Porter`s music has been a companion and a source of hope. I don't really know what the lyrics or the video intended, but I feel this song as a chant for hope, for believing that although things seem shitty right now, there is gonna be a new you waiting around the corner. A new you that will finally look at the sky and feel gratefull for overcoming those rough and sad times. At least that is my experience, and I cherish it.

So, i see it this way: The ghosts are his own insecurities when making or performing music. They never leave him alone, EXCEPT when he is not in front of the microphone. They are with him even when using the computer. If you look closely, he's not producing, but just browsing (probably counting views and likes too) As a musician i found myself in the same situation, it's actually hard

The description has the meaning of the msuic video in it
@witooz3 жыл бұрын
From the description I understand it that the ghosts around him are the ones who collaborate with him on his music. From the ones, who make the instruments he is using, to those who support him along the way, the ones who play with him in shows, all the way to those who lived in the past and made the present possible. Without the work, ideas and influences of all these people we wouldn't hear the song. At the end, the video makes us the creator and turns Porter into one of the collaborators on our journey.
@hafidhhh3 жыл бұрын

Sometimes I wonder if Porter fully grasps how much impact his music has on his fanbase and even casual listeners. Worlds saved me from killing myself when I was a teenager and Nurture shows me every day how to be the person I want to be after growing from that trauma but still living with the mental illness. These are my personal interpretations after watching this MV: 1)The ghosts we see here are all representation of Porter's past. 2)The forest floor represents the personal sanctuary his room is, where he produces all his music. 3) We see ghosts breaking every white material possible which I believe are associated with his memories. They are found in this room of isolation as it is natural for anyone in this pandemic to constantly revisit the past, where days were more normal. The past is discovered, rematerialised, and become the source of his inspiration for his music. This represents growth(which I believe is the central theme of Nurture) by acceptance of his own past. 4) We can observe Porter constantly avoiding the ghosts from the start, not facing them even once even though they completely surround him. They are constant reminders of his traumas, his past, even though the source of his inspiration are from the same memories. They make him cry but the same ghosts also wipe his tears. Another sign of him accepting his past, and making peace with it. 5) In the end we see the sky becoming the roof of the stage, which he misses greatly, and then turns into a ghost himself, which represents how he expects this present reality(pandemic) to soon also become a part of his past and everyone else's. P.S.- I enjoy Porter's music+music videos so much and this is probably the first time I wrote such a lengthy analysis! T_T I am soooo hyped for the album release in April. P.P.S.- NOTICE ME PLEASE PORTER SENPAI(MY FREN SUGGESTED ME TO WRITE THIS SO HERE IT IS T____T)

But it ain't about how hard ya hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done!” - Rocky Keep going. Don't matter if its good or not. Keep creating because you have it in you. Make it the best you can make it, but don't let yourself doubt. Know that, the part of you that wants to create is the most human thing about you. From creating fire and tools to help with daily chores, to creating cave paintings and music and stories to leave a legacy. Humans create. We are Human kind. Mistakes can be a lesson that can teach you as much about yourself as something "perfect". Know that perfect doesn't have a set definition and each imperfection can create a tapestry that is your unique style. Never give up, so long as you create, you live on. When I watched this video I was just absolutely blown away from how beautiful is truly is. I actually bawled my eyes out, for so many reasons.. One being how powerful the lyrics are, and their meaning. Two, seeing how much work was put into forming this entire song..The vocals are wonderful, the beat created is beautiful. I'm someone who wanted to try making music for the longest time, and it wasn't until I started trying to create it, that I ran head first into that wall of how hard it really is to make..I feel as though I am not capable of doing things like this, and that made me appreciate it even more to see someone like Porter create music so meaningful. Thank you.
