From Porter’s interview with popjustice “It’s about someone who’s stuck and trying to leave - but it’s scary trying to leave. It’s a representation of being stuck in this little studio: being creatively stuck, and the darkness outside the garden is representing the uncertainty of life outside your routines. It’s about taking a leap of faith towards a healthier and more balanced situation.”
@CTSSTC4 жыл бұрын
TMW you realize this is your current relationship,, you're stuck here in the comfort zone,, but it's not the right one,, you need to leave, but it's easier not to : \ There are greener pastures, but you're kinda in what feels like one, even though it's not.

"Stuck in this little studio" is much deeper than it seems literally. Im very artistic and creative, but years ago, i stopped trying to work on and create new projects all the time because i was sort of becoming an artistic hermit. Even in some philosphical/psychological theories, being stuck in even something positive can have negative effects because youre stuck there. "Artists are slaves to their ideas". Itll work for a bit, but its gona get to a point where you have to change, whether its in your control or not.

Something Comforting it's the biggest "you'll be okay" message life has ever send to me. I'm keeping these lyrics in my heart, and also the feeling of it breaking into pieces ever single time I hear "Oh, there must be... Something wrong with me", that line, I can't help but break dome into tears, at first it was like sadness, recognition of my emptyness, but then it became subtle, less negative, like if I were saying that to myself, comforting myself exactly. I admire Porter for his ability to create such personal and powerful songs. Each one of them, since the beginning, they all feel like he's hugging us. Like he's there for us. Love you Porter, so excited for the waiting.

To be honest, I have a kind of a personal attachment to this song. When this song was released, I was listening to it like crazy. A few days after it was released, my dad died in an accident. I was so sad and still is. I felt like it was the end of the world. But then I suddenly remembered this song. This song became like a tool that helped me get through the tough time I was going through. This song makes me happy and sad at the same time that I just can't explain it. That's the reason why I love it. I feel like that this song is there for me whenever I need it and I just can't stop binging it now. This video is a perfect representation of Porter's journey; Every day in this miniature forest of his, he woke up, did his daily routine, and even as the forest was burning day after day, he still insisted on the same daily activities. However, when he finally took the step outside the forest, a whole world opened up in his mind, which helped open his eyes about his daily routines. When he finally escaped the forest, he became immersed in a whole universe of inspiration and beauty, leading him to instead wake up in a huge world of endless possibility. Porter talked about how life was growing stale and horrible in the pursuit to make new music. He would cut out most aspects of what a "normal" life would be with the belief to have the firm identity as a "musician." However, this cycle of waking up, going onto the computer to attempt to make music for 10 hours and going back to sleep, made finding inspiration to make music even harder. What he normally considered his creation bubble of his studio quickly became a rotting forest. So, when he decided to chill out and try new things in life, that's when creation once again sparked in him, with this newfound appreciation of the world around him, and the spark from that became Nurture.

You know Porter, I doubt you'll ever see this, but I feel like I just needed to say this to someone, whoever's listening out there. The first time I ever heard this song was probably one of the most emotionally distressing days of my life. I'd spent the entire day arguing with my parents after getting dragged into some argument they were having that morning. Hours later they were telling me that they couldn't stay in the same house anymore and that me and my siblings (one of which is only 11 years old. I'd tried comforting her but she was just destroyed) had to choose who they were going to live with. I begged them not to force us to choose something like this. I just wanted them to stay together. After a while I just couldn't handle being around them anymore, so I left to my room and cried into a stuffed platypus plush while they continued arguing in the living room. After writing out my last words to my sisters so that I would know what to say to them if we weren't living together anymore, I got a notification for this video, and I've got to say, the timing couldn't have been any more perfect. I listened to this a couple of times to try to calm myself down a little, and even though I continued to cry for a long time, and I had to take multiple days off of school because I just couldn't handle being around my classmates in that state, your music was just, for lack of a better term, comforting. Luckily, my parents decided not to split up a few days later, though all of us aren't exactly on great terms right now. I just wanted you to know that. Even if you never read this. Your music has provided me some relief in a very tough time in my life. So, thanks man. You're an amazing artist. EDIT: I'm doing a lot better now than I was back when I first posted this, and I've left an update further down in the replies (well KZbin's being weird so I actually had to add it to the end of this comment but nevermind that). I cannot begin to express my gratitude towards the now thousands of people this comment has reached (I really didn't expect that kind of response when I first posted it, maybe two or three replies at most!) I'm so grateful that Porter's community is so supportive and encouraging. Really, your kind words really helped reinforce to me early on that other people do have the capacity to care about my problems. Keep being great everyone, your words mean more than you know! I've decided to leave this comment here as a reminder to myself how far I've come, and as a reminder to others reading it that suffering is natural, but it doesn't devalue or define you like I'd first thought of myself. Your life can get better no matter where you are now. Even if it takes a while, I guarantee you it's worth it. UPDATE: I've been wondering just how to respond to all this for a while now, but now feels like a better time than never, so here I go. I wanted you all to know that, overall, my life's a lot better now than it used to be. I've reconnected with a lot people I care about and have received the kind support and encouragement I've really needed to begin healing and moving past some of the more unsavory parts of my life so far. Not to say I have no problems at all of course, there's been plenty more I've had to deal with than what you see in that original comment, but at the very least I finally feel like I can handle my own issues for the first time in my life, and for once my future's looking brighter than my past. I've moved out of my parent's house, I'll soon be graduating high school, I'm coming up on finishing a few personal writing projects that I'm very satisfied with, and without going into too much detail, I'm beginning to finally come to terms with some personal identity stuff that I'd been taught to hate and repress all my life. I'm sorry if any of you have been worried about me after all this time, but I hope you can see this now so I can let you know that your reaching out to me here wasn't in vain. Really, this is probably some of the most genuine care and concern I've ever received. I hope you all know that it's people like you who've helped to keep people like me going all this time. Without the encouragement from all of you thousands of people, I might not even be writing this update. I love all of you beautiful people, Thanks for caring :')

100% what I interpreted it as as well. He couldn't get a bite on his fishing rod (no new ideas) and he also lost his watering can so he can't *nurture* the life around him that he already got. The message I got from this song is that he was in a "comfort zone". The more you stay in your comfort zone, the more it actually withers you away. It is never good to stay just within the confines of whats comfortable to you. You have to take risks, face that anxiety and push through. In this case, jump out of your comfort zone. In the end, it may lead you to something much more vast and beautiful then you could possibly imagine.

Loser like you? This song is about people like you, people like Porter Robinson. It's about getting stuck in a flawed comfort zone and every-time you leave try it, it gets destroyed a bit more and you end up right back in it until it all gone. You'll get through this.
@LinusKarlssonMusic4 жыл бұрын
This must be about being creatively stuck. He couldn't get a bite on his fishing rod (no new ideas) and he also lost his watering can so he couldn't *nurture* the life around him that he already got. It isn't until something goes out of the square that he experiences something new (the floating scenes), and before stepping out he looks up at the only full grown tree one last time (Worlds).
@OngJiaXian4 жыл бұрын
I believe the part where he experiences something new was linked to a line in the lyrics, "So suffer the signs that you needed to change". Changing ourselves are challenging and can be scary sometimes but we have to endure it.

I feel like the square represents the false fulfillment he has garnered from his music career. Kinda how he needed the "glory" to remain happy with his life. And that became a source of fulfillment that slowly began to fade as you can see with the vegetation burning to nothing. And to me, the ending represents the true happiness he has found, where the square only exists as a faded memory in his mind.

overananalyzing this song, the video and chord progression's relationship, 3~5 min read i think The box is a representation of the "comfort zone", the area that most people are most comfortable with working in. Although in this video it is represented as a small miniature forest... [cont.] quote from another comment: "Porter talked about how life was growing stale and horrible in the pursuit to make new music. So, when he decided to chill out and try new things in life, that's when creation once again sparked in him, with this newfound appreciation of the world around him, and the spark from that became Nurture." TL;DR: this song is about stepping outside of your comfort zone and discovering something new, and reflect porter's own experience of this cycle. anyways, during the first half of the song, the song uses a main chord progression:(e flat major) IV, III, VI, II, VI. this represents the cycle, the "comfort zone", and even as the music, which initially is upbeat, the song itself goes through 4 of the 5 stages of grief: 1:54 represents denial, with the literal cry for "help" and the moaning vocal samples. Porter looks around in his area, looking for sources of inspiration inside his comfort zone, but fails to do so. This is also the first time he reaches outside his comfort zone. 2:19 represents anger, the kicks and the relatively rough sounding synth express the frustration that comes with not being able to make songs. 2:35 represents depression, which is shown by the lack of other instruments, leaving only a piano and the vocalist. In the video, we see porter lying down, and reevaluating his past decisions, just depression in general 2:47 represents acceptance, where some. of the instruments join back in, and porter in the video makes up his mind to step outside his comfort zone. This is also the segment in which Porter stand up, having made up his mind, and steps outside the box that trapped him in a fixated bubble of thought. After this segment, we are met with the second chorus, which reuses the elements of the previous chorus, but changes the chord progression to II, III, IV, V. This marks a big change in the song and can be seen as a revelation of some sorts to Porter. He then continues to expand outside his comfort zone, and the song continues to expand in depth as Porter adds more and more "layers" to the song. After he accepts that his comfort zone was not the best place to have been writing songs in, Porter embraces change and is rewarded with newfound inspiration.

To me, this song has always been about depression. The void that opens up in your heart... after a while, it becomes a part of you. Trying to get better, to find hope in your future can feel like trying to abandon that part of yourself, like you're losing part of yourself. But years later, I can say that's not the case. That void is still sort of there... I don't think it will ever leave, but it isn't hostile anymore. It's there whenever I see someone struggling to get up in the morning, and it helps me be kind. It helps me understand I'm not alone, they're not alone and we all need help sometimes. It helps me reach out a hand and say the world really isn't as bad as you think. It helps me smile, and say something comforting :)

Wow, in my opinion, the beginning parts, he grows himself and his music and is trying to find himself. And during the part where he’s suspended with the sky, he feels like he’s writing the best music he could, but when it’s the dark stormy weather, it’s the depression setting in and then the screen is a blank canvas for him to restart. And then nurture happens!! Love you Porter, really needed this

"And hoping made you hurt more..." Man I relate to that line, sometimes I don't want to hope for anything good to happen because I've experienced several rejections and struggles in a row. But I'm reminded that God has a great plan for all of us, better than anything we could hope for, and I begin to see how all those rejections led to the creation of something great in my life. Amen.

I really feel like I’m maturing along with this new album. The idea of finding comfort in this world really speaks to me. Contrary to the concept of worlds which was about escapism, which I totally felt identified with. Now we’re finding comfort in this world, without having to escape from it. The timing of the album really resonates with my life at the moment.

This video actually represents someone being in their own view of their comfort zone when they are stressed or depressed. The longer you stay in the comfort zone, the more it will start to lose its appeal. That is why the forest started to die away. As soon as your comfort zone dies away then you will have to face your stress and fear alone without anything to support. That is what 3:02 was trying to show you when you have to face stress without using your comfort zone. This is my opinion about the video.

This video to me is showing the jadedness that comes with trying to nurture only the things around you instead of trying to find new things to nurture and experience. (Going to the same pond over and over for all his water) You become so bored and numb to the cycles that you start to slip up , first in small ways (watering can falling) but can slowly start causing serious damage to what you've created so far (the fire burning away the garden). And once you finally step out of the garden , you realize its all garden , and its beautiful.

reminds me of my situation with one of my now ex close friend. fits perfectly, the more i got hurt by him the more i wanted it, i really craved staying by his side but to him i was just a side-friend, i knew that ever since the beginning. after a while i started to realize that i would feel guilty for being asleep while he was awake, because i missed the time we could spend together while he never even cared whenever something bad happened to me, never asked me if i needed him by my side, always just told me not to be emo or things that just belittled the pain i felt. the more i hoped for it to get better, the more it hurt me to the point i'd just think about being worthy of nothing. the more i wanted him to be kind to me, the meaner he got. the more i wished for, the less i got. i finally told him a few days ago, but it hurts a lot, everyone tells me it was an online friendship but it just stings. now i know he never cared about me, i hope i can get over it soon. i always knew he never cared about me like i cared about him, but it hurts, it hurts so much to know he never cared while i always hid my pain to talk to him a little bit more, a little bit more time to spend together and i can't even stop being gloomy, i'm stuck between being angry and sad it hurts too much and it feels like he has died instead, knowing i won't be able to talk to him again hurts so bad but i didn't have any other choice, if i stayed i'd have lost my mind. there really must be something wrong with me, missing him even after he's made clear he doesn't care and ironically i had this song in the playlist i made for him a few months ago, the playlist he's never listened or commented on to, and now i'm listening to it on repeat for his sake. i still care about him nevertheless but i really hope the pain goes away

I really love this song and my understanding of the video makes me appreciate it more. The title "Something comforting" refers to the main melody in the song, the virtual garden represents a small but beautiful part of the song which he is trapped in. He was working on this song for years and couldn't complete it because he was struggling with a creative burnout, falling into a loop of listening to the main melody over and over and feeling lost for inspiration for the rest of the song until the took a different approach, when he walks off the platform in a different direction and the video enters a "glitched state" and on the other side of it the full garden is produced, which represents the full completed song ♥️
