Thanks for the demo! Sounds great and unlike a lot of coil splits I've heard, there's not a massive volume drop. I can't say I'm super familiar with coil splitting but I've gotten to hear quite a few and that seems to be a relatively common occurrence in my experience. Now I know also that there's a difference between coil tapping and splitting correct? If so what is the difference? Thanks for any info and thanks for the videos!

glad to help. Some call it coil tapping, which technically tapping is taking part of a coil in or out (Like a coil wound on top of another) they are so often mixed up that many just call the push pull/split coil tapping

@PorterPickups2 жыл бұрын
thanks! yes, you will want to put one push pull on each knob. just use the one side of lugs and you'll be set on the push pull for individual operation

That is sure a nice guitar! I guess I'm obsessed with guitars. Cheap ones that I refinish and hone my amateur luthier skills. Upon. I have accumulated over 30. I must STOP! So rather than buying more I plan to branch into mods. Lotsa buckers in my inventory I will split those that are 4 wire and change the 2 wire buckers for 4 wire as may be necessary to facilitate my modification needs. But: having in my inventory several guitars that have been coil split by a guy who is a whiz, I really question the efficacy of the procedure. Thin sounding low volume splits that disappoint. A frequent result of it all. But even so versatility Is achieved. A modification has been made. Fun has been had. The hobby wins again. Thanks for the inspirational video! Now to mess up a few attempts at coil splitting and learn by doing!! The hard way.

I’m going to split mine this weekend. I was going to spilt my tone though. Do you also do that? So spilling the volume pot just kills the volume for one coil or two depending on the switch right? Are you using a linear or audio pot for this split? Could you use both in conjunction working together? I was thinking about trying a treble bleed mod on my volume. Using a cap and resister in series. Which do you like better? You have opinions on that? Great video.
@elichavez30682 жыл бұрын
Both this mod along with the tone coil split in conjunction I’m meaning.
@PorterPickups Жыл бұрын
audio pots are fine and you can have the split function on either one and we find the coil split mod won't ever get you fully to true single tones but it's usable and nice to have options! You can do a individual per pickup or master split which is nice depending on the options you want

You must hear this so much, but im at wit ends 😂👌💯 ive brought an ibanez that has 1 knob, (volume) packing two BK pickups. Can i use a push pull to split the humbuckers thats also my volume knob. 2 in 1. Cant seem to find a clear answer or diagram to answer me. Great video by the way :)
@PorterPickups3 жыл бұрын
yes you can have it do both via push pull. run the finish wires of the humbuckers to each side of the middle lugs of the push pull. make sure the lugs closest to the pot are grounded to the back of the pot, and hook up your hots and grounds as you normally would.

Been trying to figure out better, would a coil split for volume work well on a guitar with just a single humbucker and a volume knob? I have a Gibson Melody Maker Les Paul that is just a single Humbucker and Volume knob, and was thinking for some option in sound putting in a Humbucker and a Coil Split pot. I have a Tone Zone pickup in it i tried, but find it is too high input for what I like, and am going to try a JB pickup.

I got a newbie question, after I did this mod I found out both north coils were split, which is not the middle position tone i was going for. I wanted both outer coils. How do i go about doing it? I did it on the volume put with alligator wires and I just connected the one I wanted to change, to the hot of the volume. I just don't understand how to do the same on the tone pot.

Hey quick question. I have a jackson js24 which only has one volume and one tone control. Can i only split the neck humbucker or do i have to split them both?
@PorterPickups3 жыл бұрын
with a push pull you can repeat the same method (Ground the two lugs closest to the pot on the upper part of the push pull, and run the series connection from each humbucker to the middle lugs on the upper part of the push pull. essentially it will become a master push pull at that point.
@mrfender50013 жыл бұрын
You can split just the neck if you want to. You dont have to split the bridge. It will still be a master volume for both, but when you pull up it will only split the neck if you want it to. There are a few diagrams you can find online that show the wiring for this.

Why does every example of coil splitting on YT use a DPDT pot instead o a SPST pot... like this one? CTS makes a SPST switch and for just coil splitting that's all you need.

It seems to be the most common for sale on several channels, plus you can do dual or master splits with the other side as needed, plus a few more common wiring schemes
