In the beginning she just seemed horrible but as time goes on you can tell she's really not trying to harm them but is trying to steer them towards what was considered a good life at the time. Of course she does too much sometimes but I never found her to be evil. Just misguided and a little inconsiderate of their feelings. Although that thing with Marina and the letter was quite mean.

I went from hating Portia to loving her this season. She may not be the best mother, but she’s always loved her daughters and has only tried her best to ensure their survival. She the most realistic mother you can ever find in this time period.
