After a hiatus, London electronic Jazz outfit Portico Quartet has returned with a new album, and we have them in studio to play two tracks from the record, 'Endless' and 'A Luminous Beam.' Their compositions meld acoustic and electronic soundscapes, jungle-style breakbeats and loose percussive grooves. As the title of current album "Art In The Age Of Automation" suggests, they're not interested in musical regression, but rather in "What it means to make music in the modern age, to mix human art and computer art."

Birds with no direction learn to listen to the heavenly wailing of the ocean. By this vibration, they find their migratory patterns. Now with direction... Each preforms it’s dance, the other’s keep their direction in accordance to the ocean’s deep wishes. One after the other drops from the cliffside like rain drops catalyzing a storm. And now their floating cloud has dried, but the Earth below has found new nourishment.

Feeling flows like birds aflocking Hands are moving, ticking tocking Slowed down movements warp this walking Waves of wind consume you Sand dunes fall and form again Temporal mountains erase and ascend The wind of the body and breath of the land Informing granular nothing Reaching out and pulling back Its edges flow and never crack An ever-searching amnesiac Returning to itself You cup your hands and try to hold What’s never new and never old Your grasp an insufficient mold A trite and fruitless effort A soft rain comes to meet the ground Each drop adds to the growing sound The many lost again are found Returning to themself Starlings flutter up in the sky Flowing falling flying high Their perpetual attempt to unify a continuous shift in pattern A deafening moan erupts from the clouds Its resonance carries a message avowed A scarred white body comes from the shroud The leviathan’s here to feast Moving forward mouth held agape No hope for exception or for escape A core of bird lost and forced to reshape Filling the spaces between The newly formed flock falls into the sea The whale follows close a cold guarantee That all that exists as separate and free Must soon return to itself

I heard this today on the radio (89.1 KMHD, Portland, Or.) while driving to do an errand. It wasn't as electric as Herbie Hancock from the 1970's, but it took my attention away from the day-to-day mundane tasks we all have to do and set my mind at ease. That alone is worth a listen. I just might look for this album at Everyday Music. First song was way better.

Really enjoy this music & the timing of it all is one of my favorite parts.. It's so nice & spacious, meditative sort of.. Really gives my imagination lots of room to breathe while still guiding me on a journey. Well done! Amazing musicianship, spectacular listening & interplay or colors & genres. Fine electronic & acoustic balance!

Very nice. Sort of trancey. I'd love to hear these guys recorded by Manfred Eicher on the ECM label. Seeing some of the comments below... if one isn't into music as atmosphere, atmosphere as music, musical atmosphere or atmospheric music...with passion...they might find it monotonous. Music can develop and expand in many dimensional directions other than what one typically hears on the radio. There is maturity to this music.

Pretty sure the ambient pad / texture and the bass drum kick are assigned to that fader. Once everyone comes in and he starts playing the real kick, he stops using it.

I'd like to hear the snare a little more defined louder in the mix, it's a nice sounding snare which will require the listener to turn up the volume to hear the snare but the bass is so loud it will not work well so turn down the bass a little bit turn up the snare.
