It's getting closer and closer to 30 years for me. Back when I was a design major at Uni in the early/mid-'90s, I purchased the CD of "Dummy" practically soon as it was available locally, and it saw frequent rotation in our studio stereo on campus. It's impossible to think of a time or a reason where I wouldn't have them on my absolute go-to playlist.

I just discovered Portishead. I love it. I normally listen to Rock and Metal. Beth’s vocal work is unique and haunting and awesome and amazing! That scratching is also awesome. The guitar lick and harmonica, good sample choices.

The scratching was made by recording their own samples and pressing their own vinyl and throwing it around a bit to make it sound rough. Only then did they use it to scratch in the recording session. Truly a unique bunch of musicians.

@Neur0nauT
@Neur0nauT 2 жыл бұрын
@Drebin 178 @Kozmosis I think you are both way off with the message of this song. It can be a religious connotation if you so choose that hill to die on, but it literally, and figuratively portrays human mortality, and death...and the embedded human emotion that is sometimes referred to as... Grief. It's hard to rationalise that feeling, and I think this song conveys it succinctly. With the "wonderment of stars" and those who know how it all comes together......When somebody close to you slips off this Mortal Coil...it reminds you that you too will be gone with the quickening some day.

@th3unmaker
@th3unmaker 2 жыл бұрын
@@Ningnomaningnong i think It's about the initial reaction a person has when they realize the nature of the world, and life, and the Bible's judgement on those who have rejected God. It's a bit of a dichotomy, i think, but that is also typical of life in general. Death is the only lasting peace we shall get, unless there really is something to come after that. Wolves in sheep's clothing hunt and feed on the masses, always pretending ignorance while actually seeing more clearly than the population they feed on. The verse in Jude this song is lifted from refers to such people, and their condemnation: "raging waves of the sea, foaming up their own shame; wandering stars, for whom it is reserved, the blackness of darkness, forever." edit: I had a different understanding of the verse 'those who have seen the needles eye now tread...", but now I am pretty sure it is just further pronouncement of the judgement of the wicked. The rich have seen the needles eye ('it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven"), and have rejected it in favor of riches and power, and so lose their humanity. They reject God and his laws, and become... hollow.

Michael Engle Portishead's music is psychoactive music. It really does get into your head and changes your perception of the world around you. Powerful music, I don't really have words for it. When Portishead sets up a mood, it's just so pure, so potent, and so affecting. Simply look around you. And then look around another time, this time listening to Portishead -- it alters the world. Once I was just walking around the open field in the campus listening to "The Rip", and then it hit me when it got to the crescendo. It was like I was ripped on strong weed, but I wasn't.

Back in early 2001 before TOOL released Lateralus I downloaded an over the phone interview with Maynard on Australia's Triple J station/program. Right before he got off the phone the fella interviewing MJK asked him what song from the TOOL catalog he would like Maynard to play and Maynard asked the dude if he could play Portishead - Wandering Star instead of a TOOL song because he had just recently heard it and fell in love with it. If it wasn't for Maynard I may never have discovered the Bristol trip hop sound. And I am very grateful I found out about Portishead, Massive Attack, Tricky and Liz Frazer. They are clouds without rain, blown along by the wind; autumn trees, without fruit and uprooted-twice dead. They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their shame; wandering stars, for whom blackest darkness has been reserved forever. to judge everyone, and to convict all of them of all the ungodly acts they have committed in their ungodliness Jude 1

Who says you have to be high to be a 'wandering star'? I feel that way every day. "That which does not kill you makes you...stranger..." That's me. Great song.

"Wandering Star" Please could you stay awhile to share my grief For its such a lovely day To have to always feel this way And the time that I will suffer less Is when I never have to wake Wandering stars, for whom it is reserved The blackness of darkness forever Wandering stars, for whom it is reserved The blackness of darkness forever ... Those who have seen the needles eye, now tread Like a husk, from which all that was, now has fled And the masks, that the monsters wear To feed, upon their prey Wandering stars, for whom it is reserved The blackness of darkness forever Wandering stars, for whom it is reserved The blackness of darkness forever [INSTRUMENTAL] (always) doubled up inside Take awhile to shed my grief (always) doubled up inside Taunted, cruel.... ... Wandering stars, for whom it is reserved The blackness of darkness forever Wandering stars, for whom it is reserved The blackness of darkness forever

I was re-reading Jude, I re-read the bible a lot, and Jude 13 reminded of something??? I played the tune in my head & wow...! I just love Portishead-- deep lyrics.

This gives me "some edgy/scary cult classic movie from the late 90s" movie vibe and I absolutely live for it. Need more of whatever this exact genre is

I reckon I’m the oldest listener here, I was young during the Portishead years, but old enough to understand. Greetings from Bristol.
