I once worked in a port where I would sit in a little box and make sure traffic was flowing smoothly. I had Dummy playing on a little CD player. A woman who was sitting in a line of cars waiting to board a ship got out off her car walked over to my little box and said "what is that you are playing? It's the most amazing thing I have ever heard" I opened the player took the CD out gave it to her and said it's Portishead, here take it and enjoy. She took out her purse and tried to give me £40, I refused. I was just happy to share this amazing sound. Of course I bought it again the next day and have loved that album forever. Not a month goes by where I don't put it on my car stereo and almost weep at it's greatness.

I never considered music a form of serious art until I began listening to Portishead. There was something in the ache and beauty of Beth's voice, along with the comforting eeriness the music instilled in me, that changed my way of appreciating music. Of really hearing it and applying it to my own life. Through Portishead, I found myself.

On point there * I was 14 geeky kid who played violin everyday thinking bach, Vivaldi & Nigel Kennedy ffs were as good as it gets. Then Hendrix through my sister threw me into a kind of psych comic book world, nirvana and the whole grunge thing. Something about the distilled quality of the sampling and stripped down nature of the portishead format which changed my way of relating. So happy to have seen beth gibbons in Manchester this week x

I CAN'T believe that somewhere in the recesses of my mind, I knew there was a Welcome to Portishead! documentary, & I here I am finally having seen it more than 15 years later. So good (thankyou so much uploader :) Don't worry Beth, you'll never be a pop star. Just a star. A wandering star.. Really in love with all the creators/members in the band after watching this. You're all stars, all so brilliant! ;) I think my new life dedicated to doing what i want to do in music starts here. Thanks :)

Never gets old, like most of the copycats. One of very few bands I can listen to all songs of their first two albums, from my teens and I have always listened to a lot of music. never got into Third. Just gives me goosebumps after nearly 30 years.

The music and production on Dummy were fantastic, but Beth's vocals had me falling in love her with no idea what she looked like. Her vocals were so soulful I assumed she was black and big, like Ella and Aretha. Then I saw this skinny little blonde haired white girl belting out these amazing vocals. Mentioning Geoff and Adrian is required because they were the sound behind Beth's vocals.

I've always been slightly jealous of these guys tbh.. I mean... for Beth to just roll up to them one day, & GIVE THEM that voice & all that charm & sultry allure? There're many a good producers, & a shortage of female singers. Trust me, I've looked LONG & Hard. I've gone through 5 who originally met with enthusiasm, but the next day all that passion would turn to ambiguity. And now it's too late. Music has never been so worthless. I mean, if people aren't prepared to pay the price of 2 coffees for an album any more? What's the point of spending 8 fucking months on a track? There are a few select British people who understand the profound nature of music, but this culture is dying out. Heck! Even I've stopped jamming now. If anyone wants to jam, I'm in Essex, about 30 minutes from Southend. Otherwise, see you never!

I bet there’s is a pretty strong connection between how much time they spent whining and being jealous and their successes. Probably won’t find a lot of complaining comments from actual musicians that are still making it happen, because they aren’t concentrating on why not - they’re still concentrating on why

EXCEPT For FKA Twigs, James Blake, Liam Gallagher, Kelly Jones, Liam Howlett, Steven Wilson, Ólafur Arnalds, & many other "successful" musicians including Portishead themselves. I have the links if you require them, but I reckon you're not here to learn facts; however unpalatable it may be for you. Because it's much easier to excoriate & admonish in the tired typical "You Tube" fashion, right? Now I doubt you have anything fresh to impart on your behalf, & so I shall be abstaining from responding to this thread further!!
