Great video. I haven't been in these caves at the Grove since the 1980s, with what was the Youth Activities Centre!

Pheyoo, I was so relieved for you when you finally got out, you're both very brave! I love Portland and exploring but I think I'll pass on these caves hehe.

Excellent video. Thank you Nigel. Just past the exit, on the rock with the dead bird, you comment on the grooves in the rock. My guess is they are bore holes in which dynamite was rammed to blow the rocks apart as part of a querying operation.

Yes maybe they are, I hadn't thought of that.

Great video of your adventure! I recently moved to Portland and this is the best website I've found for the points of interest. Including an explanation on the rails you found www.geoffkirby.co.uk/Portland/700720/#Caves

That's a good website. I've only just looked at it even though you posted your link a year ago! Good video too. I couldn't get the link to the first video to work though.

I wonder if the tracks were for a canon? Ideal spot for surprising ships during god only knows what war!

Yes that's all I can think of too.

The passage was originally called railway dig, a trolly was used to haul waste back to the entrance. It is now called Allotment dig entrance and joins up with the rest of the cave, which is known as Grove cliff cave or flagpole cave.
