High-five to Portland voters. Great job. Less shoppers, fewer jobs, less tax revenue for running the city, citizens feeling unsafe to stroll around in the evening. It's a progressive, inclusive, tolerant, woke wonderland.

Native Portlander for 62 years and the best thing I've done in my life is move out of that hell hole to Arizona to be around like minded people in a small city. It almost makes me want to cry for what Ted, Joann, and Kate Brownstain have done to the state of Oregon and in particular Portland. What once was one of the prettiest cities in the country is now a cesspool.

We have been after the asses of City Council about the mass vagrancy problems, including the literal take over of blocks of pedestrian public space, crime, both to property and person, open sexual activity, rampant drug paraphenalia, and....oh the garbage and the rats. . I have been greeted with responses such "its not illegal to be homeless", "the garbage is personal property" (of whom, one might ask.... the rats?). One Councilwoman's office lectured me about my "privilege" and "shaming our brave and beautiful neighbours.:. A liberal City government is one thing... this has been a liberal learning city for a long time, but this is (not to mention the near identical looniness in Seattle) entering into the territory of almost cartoonish dereliction of city and county officials at all levels. One problem is that local government has painted the problem as a "housing emergency" when what I am seeing on the streets is a drug addiction emergency masquerading as a homeless crisis. Average Portlanders' voices are crowded out a small cadre of very vocal, and I suspect litigious homeless advocates and service providers who are practically the only people local government listens to anymore. We are offered promises and promises that this is going to be resolved, but the only thing the promises generate is... more promises. I am left with the impression that the city DOESN'T WANT to solve anything -because the tents, garbage, sewage and crime feeds their political careers. Strange how in my last Seaside getaway, ...clean streets and you had look long and hard to find a tent.

Also it was the racial climate in Michigan that brought Detroit down , starting in the 1950 and continues to this day INCLUDING HELP from the federal government that ushered in redlining making it easy from one race to flee the city taking the wealth of that population along with the jobs , tax base and everything else leaving only.a Shell of what it once was the 5th largest city in the country that had more populated single family homes than ANYWHERE ELSE in the country ( by the way BLACKS WERE BANNED FROM USING THOSE low interest mortgage lows the GOVERNMENT was passing out to white citizens as blacks families were moving up north from the south.

And she's absolutely right. Once upon a time, not too long ago cops were not known as law enforcement, they were technically known as Officers of the Peace, two totally different things. Law enforcement didn't start to become a term that was used until the late 70s to early 80s. Not very surprisingly, right around the same time that we made it legal for "for profit" corporations to start running prisons. Many people forget that once upon a time every prison and jail in the United States was run by the government, that is a rarity now. They are ran by corporations looking to make a profit. And there's really no profit in running a prison unless you have a steady supply of people to fill it, is there? And that's where modern day law enforcement comes in. They aren't around to prevent crime, if that happened, how would a "for-profit" ran prison survive? How would the police be able to ask for more money every year? They are there to find it, because they have to to survive, to keep the prison supply chain moving. They know that and so do the prisons. One can't survive without the other at this point. There always has to be a boogeyman to scare voters with. There has to be something to justify police budgets and more prisons. That's why if you really want to see if a new law or something else might actually prevent or lower crime, look to see if prison industry lobbyist and police unions are trying to get people to vote against it.

The good thing about Portland is that is where we send our criminals and homeless by pointing out Portland's " Giving nature" and refusal to prosecute homeless and criminals. We remind them that here we WILL prosecute them if they commit crimes. Portland serves two purposes now. 1. An example of what NOT to become as a city. The mayor and council of Portland show us how to destroy your city in several simple steps. 2. A great place to send those that are detriments to normal law abiding society so we can move on with our life's knowing the people that will rob, kill, harass and attack us are a 1000 miles away places like Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, etc.

I was there in May 2021 and it was busy, but at that time it looked like the city had given up, no longer doing anything to help the homeless or stop the graffiti everywhere. It's always been one of my favorite cities to visit for the past 30 years or so and now I'm not sure I'll make it back there again.

Yes but Wheeler let the thugs like Antifa run wild to make things look bad and get Trump out of office believed he could just snap his fingers after a year of riots after the election and all the rioters would stop and all would go back to normal. Joke is on Portland on that one. It is like amputating your leg because you have a hang nail. Once the hang nail is gone your leg will not grow back. The thugs now OWN Portland and that will not change.

When you decriminalize everything, you will get this result. Crime is actually down in Portland because offenses that were formerly considered illegal or criminal behavior are now legal. It's all about redefining everything.
