If you don't already have a place picked out, I suggest living in south waterfront if you want to be in the actual city. The low-average rent is 1500-2500, but there's also a few extremely expensive buildings. The cheapest places you can find will be the studio apartments/dorms around PSU. They're not exclusively for students, but there's no washer/dryer in the rooms. If you've never lived in a city, then you should move to Beaverton, Tigard, or Hilsboro instead of Portland. They're suburbs west of Portland. Parking is obviously way easier in the suburbs. SE portland around Foster Road is not exactly safe for people who aren't familiar with the area, it's safe enough if you have friends with you. That's where all the best food is, so it's a good place to visit. It's kinda weird because there are safe areas and unsafe areas and they are often literally right next to each other in a sort of patchwork across the city. Just be casually polite with homeless people, they're usually just normal people but with extra depression. If you meet a tweaker, just pretend they don't exist. The tweakers are almost never dangerous. East (central) has a lot of conventional middle class houses and is safe enough for kids to be safe outside without an adult (in groups); it's expensive though. Northeast portland is just nasty. Northwest portland is complicated. Downtown is the same way. For example, there's a sketchy area that starts just two or three blocks east of Borders. We've got homeless camps across the street from $100 per plate resturaunts. It's not quite a ghetto, but there's at least one tweaker and one homeless person on every block. Important note: Do NOT live in any building that was built prior to 1997, and preferably no older than 2011. I'm a restoration carpenter and I assure you that those cute old buildings are death traps. They are built with cancerous materials, the wood is simply too old, and the foundations of many of those old brick or masonry buildings have deteriorated to the point where they literally just explode into dust when you try to drill a hole into them. Most importantly, they are not earthquake safe. The earthquake will happen eventually, and you do not want to be in one of those death traps when it does come.

The best thing about Portland? I have NEVER seen a red maga hat here. That's probably one reason for the hate from that ilk. For a city that we've been told was "burned down", it's very much not. All cities have problems but I'll work to make it better. I'm 70 and bought my first house here in 1984 after graduating from college in 1979. I travel all over the city alone by mass transit and never have issues. In fact tonight I'm going to a concert at Moda Center. The city is very much alive with something to do every weekend. Portland is a city for people who enjoy life. I wouldn't live anywhere else in the US, which I'm sure makes many of 'those people' happy.

One thing I love about this city is that people aren’t as judgy about if someone is actually from “Portland” like with somewhere like Chicago. The suburb neighborhoods are seen as just as valid, the beauty of Portland is the whole metro area. It’s also insanely expensive to live within Portland proper so most people I know live a 10 minute drive away from the boundary and pay $1000 less in rent.
@granthuling3235Ай бұрын
Hmm. I live in Sellwood and, with all due respect, people take pride in being from the “real” city unlike LO and Beaverton.
@Davinana44Ай бұрын
@@granthuling3235 That sounds extremely elitist of you. I’m also from SE and while yes living in Beaverton is a different experience than over here it doesn’t make you better. I’d say you take more pride in growing up in Sellwood. There are people who grew up around downtown who wouldn’t consider Sellwood “city” because it’s neighborhoods on the east side. I used to live in Sellwood and one of the things I loved about there and downtown Milwaukie is they feel like a little town in a big city. Each sector of Portland proper is extremely different, it’s one of the things I love so much about here. While a lot of the outer cities of the metro area used to be more farmland and such, they are also turning into what you might consider “city life”.

I laughed when he showed a literal drum circle. Portland is great if you're queer, leftist, love nature, are introverted, bookish, nerdy, and enjoy being by yourself and being cozy at home in the rain and like a chill work life balance. I've found it's not a good match for my extroverted, more moderate or conservative acquaintances, or are super career focused. I fall more into the first group so Portland is perfect for me but it's not for everyone (to live here). It's also quite expensive if you want to enjoy what Portland has to offer on a regular basis (eating out, coffee, etc.) but it is the budget version of the other major West Coast cities.

I live in Vancouver and I go to Portland sometimes, it’s not a very safe nighttime city anymore unless you are sticking to certain areas of the city or ubering around. The homeless population is a huge problem, I see 1-2 people overdosing each time I go to do something there that involves walking around. This isn’t to say this isn’t like most cities, LA and Seattle suffer from some of the same issues Portland just got worse due to decriminalized drugs. If you go to Portland during the day it’s still very nice besides the occasional person fent bent over on the corner. Just know to avoid certain areas like chinatown for walking around. Some will say the homeless are not issues but personally I’ve had friends being threatened with objects while working or walking in Portland, most of the people are homeless either by choice or by use of drugs which makes it kinda worse in many cases. Every persons perspective is going to be different but seeing tents every where not due to the fact of misfortune but instead due to not wanting to work and living a certain lifestyle or due to a drug addiction should not be encouraged. The city needs to work on improving drug rehabilitation so the major drug problems go actually get worked on. Those who seem themselves at “urban campers” shouldn’t be supported. Just sucks to see some parts of the city turn unsafe when just a few years ago I felt safe enough to ride scooters around till 2am.

Your assertion that newer structures are safer is not an opinion I share. My house has over 100 years of standing here, that’s a pretty good record. My guess it will still be here in 100 years from now while these osb pieces of crap have long since been demoed. Just my two cents. My grandfather was a structural engineer and professional court witness for the city of Portland. One of his jobs was to assess the structural integrity of the bridges and overpasses in the city. Apparently five out of the 12 bridges are basically guaranteed to fail during a 6.0+ earthquake. Dozens of thousands of people are going to die because of our aging infrastructure that was never built to withstand earthquakes even when it was brand new. This is reality. @@ARR0WMANC3R l have lived in multiple states including Oregon and the Portland area, I live in troutdale right now and there is nothing like voodoo donuts anywhere else that I can think of. I think you are used to it and taking it for granted.
