We'll have to send him all the love from all the different places we're at in the world! Hope you liked this video. You'll probably see a video of my weekend with family next week while I'm out. Ozark Highland trail and Ouachatia trail, both located in Arkansas Ozark area, about 4 hours south of KC on 71 Hwy. Very nice scenic trails. I used both of them as training for my AT thru hike. They are like a Mini AT! Complete with bears and smaller mountains! Each one is approximately 200 miles, you can do a thru hike in less than a month. I go to them to relive my days on AT! Great in fall and spring seasons. Would give you guys an excuse to be in Midwest for a while? Hit me up when in town, I have a 80 acre goat farm 1 hour west of KC, with hiking trails, places to camp etc...you two are welcome for long or short stays anytime you are in the area. I am private farm, just recreated for my past, personal wilderness adventures.

Ok, yes that is Chicken Mushroom, or the Sulphur Mushroom. Excellent mushroom, hunt this all the time. You're good! :) However, for future practice. Only take the tender Edges of the mushroom. This way, a. You get the best tasting part and b. The mushroom will re-grow for future seasons or further 'bloom' in the current season. Don't take the whole thing. :) Also, there's a diff. Mushroom, Hen of the Woods, also a Shelf mushroom(which is very good to eat as well) that you are maybe getting confused about with the name..... Hen of the Woods are darker and tend to have thinner 'shelves' than the Chicken. :)

Thank you so much for the info, we should have learned how to properly cut it, so sorry! We want to continue any and all growth for others to enjoy the wild chicken!! If you have any advice that you are comfortable sharing, feel free to email us at barronlink@gmail.com!

@@ElsaRhae No need to apologize. :) You're enthusiastic newbie Mushroom Hunters.
@callileahrizzuto22905 жыл бұрын
@@ElsaRhae oh, ok...hmmm... well, with Autumn starting, mild temps w/damp conditions are perfect for Mushrooms of all kinds. For Chicken Mushrooms, they like hardwoods like Oak, especially trees that are already down and starting to decay/breakdown. Kinda surprised you got yours from a live standing tree. It looked like Oak, was it? They like growing on the wood itself, so they can be near the ground, especially if the tree is already down, or as high up as you picked it, though not usually much higher. If you find a small clump, sometimes its better to wait a few days, so it can more fully grow in size. They also tend to re-appear at the same location year after year while the Hardwood is either still standing or until the downed tree has fully decayed, so if you make a mental map, or keep a real one, of where you find them, you can check locations for more over the years. Of course, us Mushroom Hunters tend to keep a lid on where to find choice-eating Mushrooms..... :)
@callileahrizzuto22905 жыл бұрын
@@ElsaRhae Also, very good plan is to reach out to the local Chapter of the Mycological Society for expert help in identifying any thing you find. Here's the Oregon One : www.wildmushrooms.org/contact/ . Or, better yet perhaps for Barron, give the North American Mycological site a look to find a local club closer to where you are.... namyco.org/clubs.php#O I'm in the Hudson Valley and New York has quite a few Chapters, so does Oregon, not sure how close any of them are to where you are located though. And, if you are a bit interested in Foraging Mushrooms to add you to diet, then have a look at some good Field Guides like National Audubon Society's Field Guide of Mushrooms. I do a fair bit of Foraging for Fruits, Brambleberries, Nuts, and other Wild Edibles like Mushrooms. It's a lot of fun and very rewarding. However, with mushrooms, I only hunt certain ones for eating. There are tons of different kinds, many that are considered Choice Eats, but I only pick those that I know very, very well. I love Chanterelles, but I don't pick them to eat unless I can have them identified by an Expert in Chantrelles. Same thing for Shitake / Mitake. My father took College courses in Mycology, then taught me ( because I was so good at finding them!). He also belonged to the Mid-Hudson Chapter of the North American Mycological Society. So, if you're serious about Wild Foraging and want to be able add Mushrooms to your Table....please consider joining a Club & taking a couple of classes, too. I think you and Barron would really enjoy it and will enable you both to safely consume Wild Caught Fungi. :)
