Yuya Yoshida, 24, is a growing talent. A year and a half ago, he was planning to get a regular job at a company, but he decided to continue his track and field career after running his first marathon in 2:08.30. In his second marathon (Fukuoka marathon 2020), he won the race in 2:07.05. He is now aiming for the Paris Olympics, while accompanying Suguru Osako in his preparations for the Tokyo Olympics.

Not sure why galen is getting criticism on this one. He's training marathon. It's like having a 1500 runner try the 400 and then bashing them for not winning.

@@aldisusanto2100 that doesn't make much of a difference. Rupp might have bad finishing speed in the 10k but that won't matter if his endurance holds up better in the marathon

I find it funny that people think Rupp has lost a step. This race was held on May 28 and his Olympic marathon race is on August 8. I'm sure Galen was still doing quite a bit of mileage and hasn't tapered yet. When tapering from high training mileage, your speed comes back somewhat if you haven't overtrained. Galen's bio mechanics still look, he just doesn't have his top track speed.

Galen looked a little sluggish on the last lap and not sharp. It's quite normal since I bet he's currently in a heavy training cycle logging in a ton of miles for marathon. He'll be ready come August

Likely,Galen is using this race merely as a stepping stone to the Olympics. Anyone's criticism belies their inherent LACK of knowledge about how the top flight athletes tier their races & training-pointing to IMPORTANT races. Revisit the great double double gold medalist Lasse Viren.He rarely won anything in between Olympics----but, @ the Oly final he was virtually UNTOUCHABLE!.
@utujhgf
@utujhgf 3 жыл бұрын
Viren was rare in that regard and it is widely accepted that he was blood doping for the Olympics. Moreover, Rupp has never followed that pattern in his career. Quite the opposite, he often seems able to PR year-round. Why are you supposing he is suddenly a reincarnation of Viren? Also, of course Rupp is using this race as a build-up. But he needs to be able to hold a 28 minute pace for 20K to compete with the world's best. Who is lacking in knowledge and analysis?

I'm a year older than him and I felt his pain watching that final lap. My kick that I used to have back in high school and college is long gone. I can run races faster than I used to because of better endurance and "old man strength" throughout the whole race, but my final kick is nonexistent now.

Rupp looked horrible in this race. His posture and facial expressions both convey defeat. He could not compete at the end against runners that are a minute slower than him in the 10K. This cannot be dismissed as the result of "marathon training." Many super-elite marathoners put up world-class 10K times while training for a marathon. His pace was only a tad faster than Kipchoge's marathon WR pace. Was it just a bad race or more serious (e.g., the reality of Rupp's post-Salazar performance)? Something will have to change drastically for him to be competitive in Tokyo.

@@Blittsplitt5 I'm not sure what you are responding to, but no one said they know more than Rupp does about his training, physical condition, how he felt in the race, etc. That said, I suspect that he agrees with my analysis. By the way, I am not against Rupp and hope he can bring things together in Tokyo for a worthy last hurrah (as far as the Olympics go).
