Portobello High School - memories & demolition

Video of my old High School, now flattened and housing a new Portobello primary school. The new HS is on a site not far from the old.

Went there 90-93 ... good photos .. exactly as I remember it. Had some great times at that school

Blue stair blues :( They didn't just demolish a building, they demolished a home of memories. I was an S6 when they demolished old porty. Saw the place i grew up in demolished. It's okay though, because I still have all my memories, and I have all my friends memories. Not like I'd ever set back in that building anyway, right? It is sad, in some ways, but the only thing that can be rationally preserved is memories, so why feel angry about the building, I still have all the meaningfulness, the memories. Still, for all the people out there who mourn Greener grass on the green stairs Rambunctious Rounds of the red stair Blue stair blues lift pass too my heart goes out to you all

Before I came to live in Edinburgh, I came for holidays to my grandparents in Willowbrae. I used to think it was an office block! Then when I moved to Edinburgh I realised it was a school! The demolition process reminds me a bit of when Porty power station was demolished, albeit Porty power stations' last remnants were demolished by explosives. I attended this school from 1983 to 1987. That's 2 prominent landmarks in Porty I've seen flattened.

@@scottgascoyne Yes, Portobello had a power station, Across the road from what is Aldi. Aldi was the old SSEB substation and cable repairs/renewal/ installation team.

moved here in 2016 just before it was demolished and live next to it, was very little so i remember very little but it feels odd looking at it now because everything in porty is small little flats and houses and it seems out of place looking back at it

I will add my comments, and so sad to see demolished. Went there in 1966- 1972. Head Girl was Donna Easton, Head boy John Montgomery. Music teacher Mr Dempster, Geography teacher Mr Frame, Would agree with previous comments, that" They didn't just demolish a building, they demolished a home of memories" for all of us attending Portobello High School .

Mr Dempster was the first music teacher we had when I attended. He was music teacher there when my mother attended!! Was it a Mr Houston who was the Head teacher when you attended? If so, the same one my mother had as head teacher. It was Mr Purves when I was there.

@@derekporter7658 Yes Mr Houston was the Head Teacher, first attended, and known as the beek by younger children, but then taken over by Mr Baggley when I was there.

They where talking about the new school being built in 89. I mind cause it was in this building, lol
