He was absolutely the best person to paint Alan. They both have that amazing, chaotic yet brilliant creativity that mesh perfectly. This was fate at her best.

I love the part where he made the actor paint, he painted and then they worked together. In all of that he was still observing his ‘sitter’ - a collaboration indeed.

Most people believe what they see is the reality of who a person is. He sees the reality others believe to be the total person, and looks past it to see the model's spirit. This is an exquisite portrait of both. The best one thus far.

This “finale” did NOT disappoint! Most engaging as both men are fascinating creatures in their own right. Both artist and sitter came together and produced an amazing, unforgettable portraiture. Bravo All Documentary for your steadfast and reliable posts which brought such pleasure to those of us fortunate enough to have accessed this series! Please entertain us with more, if possible!

I have seen few artists combine all the elements and principles of art in such a dynamic, naturalistic way. The skill, ingenuity, composition; all of it shows Christian knew, not only his subject, but he went into his subject’s mind and heart. It was wonderful to see Cummings delight in every sketch he did. I would have them all framed and shown because they are pieces of art in themselves. Christian is a tour de force and I only wish I could watch him paint in person. It would be the highlight of my artistic life. So young, so talented, and what a humble young man with a beautiful smile.

I was worried he was trying to fit too many ideas in one work and it would end up a mess, but I think what he's done is edited his own ideas and seen what's ultimately 'true' about Alan's personality and came up with a brilliant portrait. The other portrait he gave Alan was magnificently done, but the actual commission captures his spirit so much more.

Such a fabulous process Christian has! I love the way this man moves through his ideas and observations. And it doesn’t hurt when he has such an incredible subject from which to work! Absolutely brilliant! It was also heartwarming how Alan was drawn right away to the tribute to Honey and his pride in Scotland’s drive to become independent! They are so central to his heart and personality; Christopher was able to flush those out! Amazing! 💕💕💕

I think I can see how the artist's early career as an illustrator aided his painting. He knows how to design his elements in an exciting non-traditional way using the shape elements in the way of his choosing rather than a stiff portrait format. This is the kind of rich, thick, liquid paint style I love to see in art. In my 1st year in art college an instructor said that if you want realism use photography as the outcome will look the same. I say yes and no to that. If a realistic style of painting allows you to manipulate the design (as in surrealism) as no photograph would do then I think ok go for it. My own personal favorites are brush stokes, drips, loose texture, etc. I tend to love the rough sketches and not tight polished works. This loose expressive style is one of the favorites I've seen. It would work as an illustrative style if reduced in size and selected subject matter, and it is really exciting and fabulous in this larger scale!

After seeing the photo which the portrait is based on, I only wish that he'd kept some of the red lamps in the background along with the warmer brownish tones in both the background and in the floor instead of blocking off the entire top and bottom of the painting in boring tones of gray. Not sure what his motivation for doing it is, but he's the artist and it's his painting and ultimately it's only he, Alan Cummings, and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery that matters.
