Hi everyone, I wanted to let you know that I’ve edited out some of the more tedious portions of the video this time. I only mention it because I usually don’t. Just trying to keep them short and sweet. The drawing took about 45 minutes unedited and in real time.

Hi Jeff!! I'd really like to watch your full length process! Never tedious ❤

Thank you, that's nice of you to say. I'm planning to do a longer real-time w/discussion video very soon!

Hey I agree, as a learning portrait artist myself I understand that some just love to watch great art being created, but for myself it incredibly informative to see what is happening in reality. Ps may I suggest for longer form videos music a little softer and more ambient as this jumpy stuff kind of gets grating - like being stuck in an elevator going to hell! lol thanks for incredibly inspiring videos.

Hi Jeff, is this drawing dine from a reference photo? If it us, would it be possible to have the reference photos visible in the future videos? I find it really useful to see what you are doing in the drawing related to the actual reference. Absolutely love your tutorials and my "go to" videos at the moment!!

I was amazed by the amount of depth you managed to achieve by adding that relative small amount of neck-hair six minutes into the video. I thought the portrait was popping already, but that detail just lifted it off the paper. How much are you usually evaluating the references beforehand? Did you plan that detail to get that result? One more question. How important is the paper when drawing with charcoal? Is it mainly the roughness that matters when entering this medium? And yes, I will definitely be joining your Patreon!

Thanks Tommy! I don't plan out smaller details, sometimes little things like that just work really well and you're thankful when they do, haha. The paper is really a personal preference, many charcoal artists use a more textured paper because it hangs on and grabs the medium better. I usually use a smoother drawing paper (I think it's 'medium' finish). I use textured paper sometimes too, but too smooth isn't good.

Is it some kind of Loomis method when you sketching face? I just draw portraits a short period with pencil but after seeing your work, I just felt in love with the expressiveness of charcoal and its kind of bold impressionism (I'm not so sure how to describe it cause I do not know much, just kind of feeling)
@JeffHainesArt17 күн бұрын
Thanks! Yes, I use kind of a mixture of different methods, Loomis certainly plays a part in it. Glad that you liked it!

What is the name of the pen you draw with?
@JeffHainesArtАй бұрын
What you're probably seeing is a pencil extender, with a stick of charcoal fitted into it. I just like some distance between my hand and the paper.
