I decided to give a 10 minute sketch a try and had a lot of fun with the challenge. I think mine turned out ok for a beginner anyway!!!!

I tried it, too, except it ended up taking a bit closer to 40 minutes to look okay. 😅

Im never sure if I put too little charcoal down, or rub away too much to really sculpt successfully. You make every element, and I mean every element to this process look so easy, Josh. A true master.

I am disappointed with all these artists who trace everything. That’s not skilled art. I am so impressed by your skill as an actually great artist. I appreciate you for staying authentic.

6:32 muffed it on the eye it was spot on mysterious, right mid portion of jaw I would pull in or erase that portion out , slightly less pupil detail as it evokes more of something else..Kind of a Casey triangular finish perhaps would take the noise out of the lower portion..Regardless exceptional work in 10 minutes...

Not really, especially when you are a beginner. When you get to MC level you can do amazing staff with a filled ashtray and your finger but, if you are starting out, I'd suggest you get purpose built tools from an Art Supplier.

I think it went great up until half-time where you structured it, smudged it down and blocked out the light. After that, you got lost in details instead of repeating the same cycle, which would bring the right amount of details to light for a 10' study. The final result looks impressive, but the more you look at it, the more it "kicks" you in the eye. What's "kicking" is the loose structure. In fact, I would propose a different challenge: Run 2,3 or even 4 "Structure, Smudge Down, Block out the light" 5-minute cycles on top one another and see what happens - I'm sure you'll be surprised. Don't get me wrong, I follow your channel because I thoroughly enjoy your process, and your expressionistic approach is bar to none! I also believe spending a bit more energy into structuring in order to support all this raw expressiveness will bring your art to a whole new level! Keep up the good work! All the best!

I think these sorts of quick timed exercises are really beneficial for artists to practice loosening up and focusing on bigger shapes rather than getting too knit picky on little details. I don't think he's just doing this to show off his speed, it's just a demonstration of how great art can be made while allowing yourself to be bold with your strokes while being unafraid to be messy and loose. Of course it takes time to come up with such a beautiful result as his haha but it's a fun challenge nonetheless. It's also more about the process than the final result

Josh has always said that he doesn't go for exact likenesses in these videos, he uses them for reference to light and shadow and sculpts his own faces. He once said that he sometimes uses multiple photographs to create a single portrait. A lot of these videos are about the journey rather than the destination.

This is the verse that convicts me brother. Proverbs 18:1. Nate, we are representing Jesus Christ. Sinners should look to us and see hope in him. Even the ones who seem so far off. We can leave them with something good or plant seeds. It is so hard to choose that sometimes, but didnt Jesus choose that way for us? Ive been humbled brother, because there are some unbelievers who have been incredibly kind when I was on my own, still lost but we got to understand their weaknesses to help them. Its good to discern lets redirect it. I understand we do have to beware of certain people and those who take pleasure in sin, but there are lots of opportunities to be evangelists.
