PORTRAIT OF A LADY Review by Frederic Malle | 10/10 Masterpiece

The word masterpiece is sometimes used too casually, but Portrait is indeed a true masterpiece. To my mind, Portrait is to Malle as Shalimar is to Guerlain and No. 5 is to Chanel. A perfumer like M. Ropion comes along maybe once in a century. I am just glad I sharedthe same century with M. Ropion. 😊

Interesting how we all have different experiences with perfumes.. POAL is my signature scent regardless of what I'm wearing or where I'm going and I always get loads of compliments, in the hot weather it turns fresher in the cold weather is more comforting and spicier. I find it super sexy and elegant. I'm looking for a more affordable signature scent but no perfume can beat this one 💙

This scent is special to me for so many reasons. It was my first niche perfume. I visited the Frederic Malle boutique in NYC while we were in the city for my son's seventh birthday, and he picked it out for me. He has good taste! It has since become my "power fragrance." I wore it for a series of interviews for my dream job, which I landed, BTW. So, in addition to the fact that it's stunning, it has some really positive associations for me. I just bought a new bottle (literally just arrived today).

I bought it 2 weeks ago and I love it but I have to agree with so many things you said. For example it’s very long lasting and I only sprayed one time in the back of my neck and one time in my chest and I can smell it for almost 24 hours until I took a shower. It’s sad when I spend a lot of money for a perfume I like or someone recommends but disappears after an hour I sprayed. I also agree with you that it’s not a perfume I could wear daily or during the day. Is more for special occasions and night time. It’s a very unique fragrance that even though I love I don’t want to wear to often. In my 2 weeks I have it I have only worn it 2 times. Perhaps because I have many other perfumes but I would definitely recommend this one. Someone in the comments said that it changes with the weather. That it’s smells different in summer than winter so I can’t wait for spring/summer to see if it does that on me.

Hmm...on my skin they're very different. They're both very earthy and heavy, but the scent isn't very similar imho...

I have been wanting to try this for months and when I finally receive my decant, im so surprise to find it smells so similar to sehr Al Sheila. There are of course slight difference but from the air you really can't tell. You have to really put nose to skin to be able to tell them apart. Poal has more depths and interesting developments of course but at the dry down I actually prefer sehr Al Sheila. Because the incense note in poal is too much for me.

Perfume is such an individual thing! I was so exited to try this fragrance! I got hurt by my expectations))) I didn't smell any rose at all. It opened up with very aggressive clove and I could detect a bit of raspberry. It reminded me of potpourri that has been sitting in my aunt's bathroom since 1986 and it got only worse from there... In about three minutes it turned into my grandma's dresser filled with old bar soap with sour milk undertone. My husband cought a whiff of it and said: Please, do something about it. I don't know if it's my body chemistry or bad batch. I smelled it in a grocery store the other day, as a woman passed me by, and recognized it immediately. I left the store))))))

100%, you described it perfectly. Smells like bathroom potpourri that’s in an old ladies home. So many better rose scents on the market, makes me feel like these reviews are fake.

A man can but be discreet, Small goes along way, at first it's strong but the scent softens after about an hour, don't add more lol, it lasts all day....

I bought a sample of portrait of a lady and it smells just awful on me. I’m so bummed out because I’ve heard such wonderful things about it. Smells just like straight up vetiver, tequila, and lime on my skin lol.

The FM I always wanted and never got. However, I’ve still got some of the old 3ml samples and as one spray is enough, this will last me for a long time. I remember that I once wore two sprays, spent some time in a small shop and then two other clients entered and commented on the lovely scent in the shop. I guess it was me as 😂, but who knows. It’s all I could smell.
