Special Collections Assistant Alex Wilson introduces the life and work of Edward Carpenter (1891-1928). Carpenter was a pioneering author who was in a same sex relationship with George Merrill (1867-1928) and lived together as openly as was possible to do in the early 20th century. Carpenter was a close friend of author E.M. Forster (1879-1970) and influenced 'Maurice', Forster's novel about homosexual love published posthumously in 1971.
