super spannend.

I recognise the problem you had although not with Hahnemuehle (I use the lighter aquarel paper) In my experience some papers react better to treatment with a glass pushrod instead of a brush. The brushing somehow loosens the fibers and while rinsing they flush away. The more heavy the paper the more more often this phenomen occurs. You make great videos I enjoy watching them.

Thank you Eric, so you would say I should try out a different brush? That is a good idea. I was thinking, since I dry the paper (before exposure) with a hair dryer, that I somehow "force" the paper to dry to quickly, not permitting the fluid to sink in properly... I'll try both.

I never use a hairdryer but I can imagine it could contribute to the problem. Here: www.mikeware.co.uk/mikeware/preparations.html a good description of the alternative method "Glass Spreader Rods" I found mine on ebay.

KZbin's automatic translated subtitles on this video from German to English are absolutely horrendous. "I say then let's get on the socks go into the kitchen and build out" what 😂😂 I'm totally lost here haha

"Sich auf die Socken machen" - "put some socks on" is an german expression and means something like "set off" "or "let's start" :D The word "Socke" (and I also think the word sock) comes from the Latin "soccus". This was a simple slip-on shoe, that women used to wear in ancient Rome.

Andy, Absolutely stunning cyanotypes with beautiful tones and depth. It looks like you coat the paper with only the ferric ammonium citrate. I suppose the potassium ferricyanide is in the developer? Did you find this a better approach? And could you hint at the percentage of Pot. cyan. in the developer and how many prints can you make before the chemical is depleted? This is the first time I have ever seen this technique. Thanks, Jake

Not sure why the secrecy behind your "developer". Saw your other video and you didnt want to give an answer on it either. Why not collab with everyone so we can all learn? You are getting fantastic results which im sure I speak for many, we would all love to learn how you got such results. What a shame...
@AndyGrabo

It‘s not secrecy, I simply don‘t know. It didn‘t develop the formula, a friend did. He doesn‘t want to share it and I simply repect his wish. Sorry

Looks to me to be the process known as 'The New Cyanotype Process' or just 'The New Cyanotype'. It's a one bottle solution that doesn't need a separate developer. You get a much greater tonal scale than the usual process but to me it lacks the charm and romance of an image created with the traditional method. The problem with this new method is that it uses Ammonium Dichromate and that stuff is NASTY. Prints are developed in water as per normal and contrast is manipulated through the use of citric acid. You can buy the stuff already premixed from Fotospeed but it's not exactly cheap. Google New Cyanotype or Cyanotype Sensitiser and that should give you all the info you are after. Regards, Kirk.

@@kirkrogers4937 I just searched that and it seems the dichromate is optional (if you make yourself the solution) and is mostly to significantly lengthen the shelf life of the solution by acting as oxidizer to keep the iron in III oxidation state (my guess im not really sure what its for). So i guess you can make it and not use the dichromate, instead a few drops of hydrogen peroxide might help when the solution starts going bad (become blue on its own). The old process has worked very well for me so far.

@@kirkrogers4937 Many thanks for sharing this information, Kirk! Can the "new" approach be processed in the same way as the old formula (bleached in sodium carbonate, oxidised in hydrogen peroxide and then toned in tea or coffee)? What exactly is it you prefer about the old variant - the process or the results?
