Portraits of a planet: Earth from space

For centuries, we could glimpse the curvature of Earth from mountain peaks but the only way to ‘see’ our planet whole was through globes and maps. Then our world view changed. Not long after the end of World War II, scientists began experimenting with captured German V-2 rockets. They replaced the V-2 warheads with cameras and launched the rockets into near-Earth orbit, capturing the first images of Earth from space. These became the first in a series of iconic portraits that changed our relationship with our planet. In this Nature Video we celebrate these awe-inspiring images, including Earthrise, The Blue Marble, Pale Blue Dot and more.

Without an atmosphere, the moon has no protection against the high-intensity UV radiation from the sun, which would damage equipment that was made to capture light. The astronauts didn't point a camera at the sun because it would destroy the camera's image-capturing device. Same reason you shouldn't look at the sun with your eyes; you'll go blind

The imperfection in the earth's circumference as measured around the equator as compared to the circumference around the poles is only around 20 miles, but because of this imperfection, even though small, the earth is referred to as an oblate spheroid. When the whole of the earth is viewed from space, this very small circular imperfection can't be discerned by the human eye, it's just too small. Understand now?

We don't have many opportunities to photograph the entire earth. Satellites and space stations orbit way to close to see much. So unless we send probes to the moon, mars, or other places in the solar system, there aren't many opportunities. Most of these longer distance missions don't even bring camera equipment.

These so called stunning images of Earth have been totally disproved because of the multiple use of the same cloud formations in the photo shopped images, how obvious can faking be, you copy a few cloud formations and spread them around an so called image of Earth. Only problem is you did not anticipate a smart alec analyzing the photo's carefully (DUH). If in this technological age how hard is it to send a small high quality video camera into an geostationary orbit say 2 million miles away and have it video the Earth as it spins in space. The reason you will never see this video is it cannot yet be faked!!!!

1:55 minute mark of this video shows the sun powerful enough to light up the day part of the earth, but NOT powerful to light up surrounding sky? From the earth when the moon is out during the day we can see the moon is surrounded by sunlight, we see no black. I believe if this was a real picture of the earth we would see the earth and the sky all lit up by the sunlight like we see the moon in the day.
