Pterie is the Portsmouth Pterosaur, friend of Playto, and lives off the coast of Portsmouth. Pterie is very curious about the human world and wants to meet new people and find out how things work.
In this episode, Pterie meets Dr. Andrew Flatt, Consultant Microbiologist, at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust where he learns about Louis Pasteur.
In the mid 1800s, Louis Pasteur’s curiosity and thoroughness led to key breakthroughs which established Microbiology as a scientific domain. Today, we are able to rapidly identify and treat pathogens (dangerous micro-organisms), which cause infection including sepsis, building on this early work. Interestingly, Louis’ father Jean Pasteur served in Napolean’s army, and was awarded Legion d’Honneur, the highest military honour of France. According to his biographer, Louis Pasteur for a while lived under a shadow that he would never reach the achievements of his father. He was himself given the Legion d’Honneur for services to medicine, one of the first to be given the Award outside of the military.
