As a Portuguese fan, I'd choose this team over the current one any day. Sure, the individual talent might not be as high as it is now. It's obviously not even comparable. But we played as a true team back then. Nowadays, we just dominate possession and pass the ball around endlessly-it’s gotten boring. Euro 2012 was so much more exciting to watch.

Não é questão de ser o Martinez ou outro qualquer. Obviamente que a qualidade da seleção atual dá 10 a 0 à de Paulo Bento. Mas com o pouco que tínhamos, lutávamos muito mais em campo e criávamos mais oportunidades do que agora. Podíamos perfeitamente ter ganho este Euro 2012. Espanha, campeã europeia e mundial à data, e provavelmente a melhor seleção de sempre, viu-se aflita para nos passar. No final, lá tiveram sorte nos penáltis. O que eu quis dizer é que prefiro uma equipa com menos qualidade, mas que luta e dá tudo em campo, do que uma seleção repleta de talento, mas que pouco faz com ele. Posse de bola para cá e para lá na maioria dos jogos, chega a dar sono...

@@afonsorlcosta eu concordo na parte de ter sido muito injusto termos perdido com a Espanha. Mas de resto era uma seleção completamente dependente de um Ronaldo no seu auge. Sem ele seríamos nível da Chéquia. Os jogadores que temos não têm a culpa de terem qualidade muito acima da média. Tirando o jogo com Geórgia, acho que fomos fortes em todos os aspectos do jogo, inclusive na entrega e vontade. Jogadores como o Bruno e o Bernardo, Cancelo, Palhinha, Vitinha, dão tudo em campo. Acontece que nesta fase da época, esses mesmos jogadores já levam mais de 60 jogos ao mais altíssimo nível nas pernas. É natural que tenham mais dificuldades em termos de intensidade e até qualidade. Falta ali mais qualidade na definição final que permita sermos mais objetivos mas não acho que sejamos só passar bolas para os lados. Contra a Chéquia parecia um jogo da nossa liga contra os Portimonenses da vida. Massacre e no único remate que fizeram marcaram. Contra a Turquia, que jogou mais para ganhar, for 3-0. Certamente, os jogadores não têm culpa de terem qualidade. Ainda bem que a têm, e que, hoje em dia, temos muito mais opções do que tínhamos no passado. Mas infelizmente, isso não se traduz em talento coletivo em muitos jogos, sobretudo nos decisivos. A questão do cansaço ao longo da temporada não pode servir de desculpa. Estes torneios realizam-se sempre no final de épocas longas, e não são só os jogadores portugueses que chegam cansados. Os espanhóis também jogaram esta época, e praticam um futebol, no mínimo, três vezes melhor do que o nosso. Enquanto continuarmos com este estilo de jogo passivo e previsível, não vamos lá. De que nos vale ter 70% de posse de bola se, depois, mal criamos oportunidades? O jogo contra a Turquia foi uma exceção, mas não invalida a regra. Contra equipas grandes, do nosso nível, sempre quero ver se esta seleção se sai melhor do que a do Euro 2012 teria saído.

Gotta keep in mind the change in the style of play since then. It's so much more possession and defensive based now. Believe in this Portugal team despite this loss! Remember that we used to scrape by in qualifiers and group stages, now they dominated France in the run of play, the same team ranked no.2 in the world and nearly won the world cup twice in a row. The shootout loss today was tough but It's a slow process road and Portugal is getting there. I'm just sad that legends like Pepe and Ronaldo who took us here might not see the dream fulfilled on the pitch but rather in the stands.
