Great video. The reason for blue lights in the bathroom is to make it hard for drug users to find a vein to inject drugs. While they decriminalized most drug possession in Portugal, they still treat it as a public health issue and send people who are caught with small amounts of drugs into treatment rather than jail.

I doubt that's actually the reason they use blue lights. Blue in specific is just a very calming colour, that's why it's used in ambulances to soothe the patients, not because it makes it harder to find veins. Also it's just a nice bit of aesthetics.

Beautiful, stylish and discreet exterior livery and interior design - very different to the idea of what's contemporary in the UK, where public transport equivalent's often give the impression they've been designed by a five year old using every one of his crayons! Parabens CP!

I do love me the bright coloration of the liveries of the UK and Italia, though myself. I strongly prefer it over the painful simplistic, monotone color schemes and designs many go for now since that's what is considered "modern". Grays, silvers, whites & blacks dominating the liveries with only a slight touch of real color here or there just... isn't something I like much if at all honestly. But of course, that's me. I can't remember which service it is in the UK that has the livery which is silver, yellow & red, but it's one of my personal favorites. Italy's Italo & National Operator's liveries are also at the top of my list. Their NO's Red, Black, Gray & White is fantastic.

The Italians understand style and that goes for the French too. About the trains. "Pendolino (from Italian pendolo [ˈpɛndolo] "pendulum", and -ino, a diminutive suffix) is an Italian family of tilting trains used in Italy, Spain, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Finland, Russia, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, the UK, Switzerland and China. Based on the design of the Italian ETR 401, it was further developed and manufactured by Fiat Ferroviaria, which was taken over by Alstom in 2000. " en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pendolino

The problem of alfa pendular is actually the rails, which even after 20+ years don't allow it to go at his top speed. Luckily, government is finally starting a new railroad parallel to this one, which will solve this problem. Atleast that's what they announced, an huge investment in rails all over portugal ;)

Well yes, planning stage has already started on the Lisbon-Porto and Porto-Vigo high speed railway, which will enable speeds in excess of 250km/h, and will be done in Iberian gauge in order to have compatibility with the rest of the network. Despite not having a significant increase in top speed, it will allow for an increase in average speed, allowing Porto-Lisbon in less than 1h40min possibly.

@@sergiofreitas9368 no firm decision yet if the line will be built in two phases initiated by the Soure - Gaia section or in one shot. In case the line bypasses the cities of Leiria, Coimbra and Aveiro using chords to link to the conventional lines and serve the actual stations, 1h10m (or less I would say) will be possible for non-stop trains.

I rode Alfa Pendular for the first time in March 2020. This was at the height of pandemic. I was coming from Gatwick to Porto .Immigration personnel asked me whats the purpose of my visit and I said something in Portuguese to visit the land of my ancestors. He look at my american passport and got confused as why I have a portuguese last name. I am not claiming Portuguese but I am overwhelmed how magical and beautiful the land of my great grandfather is. My great grandfather was actually born outside of Porto. I visited the place and was touched by how warm the people are and of course how charming Porto and the surrounding region was. Stayed 3 nights in the city and took the train to Lisbon and explored the city.

On my first visit to Portugal, visiting friends a few years ago, and travelling from Porto to Coimbra, they told me to take the Alfa Pendolino, First Class because, as a senior traveller, the fare was about half price!! Great value!! I've done the return journey three times now & it's always been very comfortable, sure, a bit noisy sometimes, but the ticket office staff at the stations, & the on-board train managers, have always been very polite & helpful. A food trolley service on the my most recent trip 3 months ago was useful and it was good to see the mid-carriage speed indicator clocking-up as we sped along on this smooth-running train. It's a great way to travel in Portugal.

Yes but also no. Imagine starting in Amsterdam and going to Greece, some touristic city in Greece, which can well be O&D traffic but to do that by train even if it is high speed will never beat the plane- without a hyperloop system, excluding feasibility issues.

@@alexandregraca7732 well in that case make awareness among more people to take these trains, and then prices will go down by 30-40%..... I also believe time travel can be reduced to 2 hours considering 332 km with 3 intermediate stops between Porto to Lisbon, if it's really High Speed Train and the rails too.

I would NEVER do that trip by Bus! It's simply the most unconfortable, disagreable and unconvenient transport mode. Train trips booked in advance are fairly cheap and there is no way to compare with a bus or a plane, in terms of cost-benefits. Track gauge have nothing to do with national trips and there is already technology to surpass that problem (variable gauge axles). That's a non-issue. Besides, the first two North line variants will be enough to drop the trip duration from 3 to 2 hours in the near future. There isn't any problem with track maintenance, but mainly with it's old delineation and congestion. You read, congestion. The huge increase in train passengers before covid speaks for itself, in terms of people's preferences. Wise people don't prefer to be transported as cattle, if they can pay 9,5 ou 11 euros for an IC or Alfa ticket (when booked in advance).
@Mpl3564
@Mpl3564 3 жыл бұрын
@@alexandregraca7732 I traveled in both the Alfa and the IC since several years ago, and always paid those prices without any of the inconveniences you refered. Once booked in advance, there is no need to re-check anything. And I'm pleased to know that the other issues I mentioned are not relevant anymore. Considereng all the train drawbacks you enphasized in your previous comment, including even the Iberian gauge, that's quite a progress. 👍

@@NonstopEurotrip Thank you! UK deserves a 2nd visit, we've been in London in August 2018 and spent only five days there. We have enjoyed London a lot, recharged our Oyster cards twice and did a trip from London St Pancras to Paris Gare du Nord through Eurostar - one of my dreams accomplished. I'm now 64 and am a fan of British trains and railways since 1973 (I have a small collection of OO scale models) as well as the British rock'n'roll singers & bands like The Beatles, Elton John, Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd and many others. However only five days at London weren't enough to see all I would like, but some dreams were accomplished (boat ride on Thames River, pictures of HMS Belfast and London Bridge, a visit to Imperial War Museum, Tate Modern, a coffee at Waterloo Station, another excellent coffee at Shoreditch (Ozone, I liked that rostery and shop a lot), the change of guards at Buckingham Palace, ate a full English breakfast at Earl's Court and many, many other things. After pandemic we would like to return to UK to do train rides to Windsor Castle, Penzance, Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh and, who knows, other British Cities. Your country is so beautiful of history, traditions and modernity as well. All the best to you!

We rode on Portuguese trains only during our 1989 trip to Portugal. Took a train from Lisbon to Évora, and the another down to Faro and Tavira. Back then the tracks were in such bad shape the train would sometimes travel at a walking pace, just a few mph. EU money has since transformed travel in Portugal…high-speed trains and modern motorways for easy, faster and safer travel. But the slow back roads, small towns and slower pace are still more interesting. Portugal is my favorite travel destination.

Nice and informative video. I was a _Linha do Norte_ (Northern Line as we call it, the whole stretch from Lisbon to Porto) passenger many times, from 1997 up to 2006. Even made the inaugural voyage of the Alfa Pendular in the Summer of 1999, by pure chance. But made trips in just about every service there - Commuters, Regionals, Intercity, you name it. Route may not be the most scenic, but that stretch alongside the ocean always dazzled me; never missed the look over Maria Pia bridge either. Previously, the fastest service was also called "Alfa", made essencially with the same rolling stock as the Intercity trains; so, with the entrance of this new FIAT rolling stock, they just added the "Pendular" to stress the difference. In some enthusiast circles, they also call it the CPA - _Comboio de Pendulação Activa_ (Active Pendulation Train). And what a delightful trip it is aboard this train! And noise etiquette my friend? Please: we're latins! And boy oh boy, you came to my beloved Douro valley! And aboard no less than one of my all time favorite train sets: a 1400 and the Swiss Schindlers!!! Also travelled there countless times, from Régua to Porto, and from Régua to Mirandela, via _Linha do Tua_ . Portugal's finest lines, without a doubt. Cheers!

I really enjoyed watching this video! My maternal grandfather was Chief of Stations for years in Portugal. My mother literally lived in train stations around Portugal growing up in the 1940's-1960's. If you ever go to the Monte Real train station, my moms family lived in one side of that station and that big house behind it belongs to my uncle Mario. My mom, dad, and I immigrated to the U.S. when I was a baby but I have visited a couple of times. The last time was in 2006 and I absolutely loved sitting outside the Monte Real station by myself listening to the leaves on the trees rustling. Most peaceful place I have ever been! Thanks for posting this and bringing back great memories! I'm hoping to visit with my mom in the next year or two. She hasn't been back since 1980.

Porto Sao Bento railway station is a gem, beautiful interior. The trains on this line all run on the same tack, fast and slow trains, the fast ones overtake (presuambly in a station). Coimbra also has two stations, city centre and out of town, there is a free shuttle between the two. I travelled a few times in 2017 between the 3 cities, (Lisbon, Coimbra and Porto) dissapointed to mention on all my journeys the trains ran late.

I´ve heard that sometimes the trains can depart 1 or 2 minutes late due to some last-minute passengers that have mobility issues or very heavy and big suitcases, sadly that never happened to me I remember missing the train at least 3 or 4 times due to him departing on schedule, some of those with me standing there next to it and still they departed xD . Other times trains can be delayed due to some issues over some point of the train tracks (accidents, malfunctions of various order, etc) but people sometimes pay a 3-star rate and expect a 5-star service.. that is normal ;))))

I travelled on the Lisbon-Porto line in 2020, January. I made a stop-over in Entroncamento in order to visit the railway museum. Very recommended. And I stayed a few nights in Aveiro. In Aveiro you can take the narrow-gauge line to Sernada da Vouga. Unfortunately the direct narrow-gauge railway Aveiro_Espinho has been disconnected. The Espinho railway station is now underground, being part of a complete refurbishment of the main line Lisbon-Porto.. I It was since 1983 that I had not been in Portugal, but I had a great time.

It's worth a visit to Porto's São Bento rail station, with their much beautiful tiles and their tunnels that link that station to Porto Campanhã, did some pictures and one small personal video there. A rail trip from Porto to Braga is beautiful and today the Minho's Line up to Valença is electrified. Other Portuguese cities my wife and me went were: Guimarães, Braga, Vila Nova de Gaia (crossing Douro river from Porto), Lisbon, Cascais, Sintra, Évora, Batalha, Fátima, Óbidos, Nazaré, all of them by train and/or by car. It's a beautiful country, full of history, traditions and excellent food & sweets (have you tried the famous pastéis de nata, travesseiros de Sintra and bolas de Berlim?)

The trip between Porto and Lisbon -- or vice versa -- aboard the Alfa Pendular is very comfy , taking about 2.30 hr. Contrasting with the Alfa, an airplane only takes 40 minutes. However, the trip to the Airport, undergoing the Security-Check ritual, waiting to board the plane, moving to the take-off location, etc. Yes, the flight, itself takes only 40 min. But getting to the destination, the reverse process must be endured. In sum, all together the airplane-trip gets very close timewise to the Alfa service. And traveling by train, one becomes master of his own time -- we may sleep, read, work on the Portable Computer, watch a movie, go to the bar, have a few and return to the seat. In sum, by airplane the total time is about the same. However, the time-lenght is cut up, divided in several segments. Therefore the time spent before, during and after the airplane trip is useless...

Quick correction: it’s Aveiro (really beautiful city, by the way). ;) Also, you could’ve added that Oriente station was a project by Santiago Calatrava and that there are plans in place to expand it northwards in order to accommodate new and proper TGV/AVE-style high-speed lines in European gauge to Madrid and perhaps even Porto. Well, I did take both the refurbished and non-refurbished versions of the Alfa, and while the original was almost as cool, it was indeed showing some wear and the new ones are a definite improvement. The Lisboa-Faro service is a bit less smooth and prone to issues, so a comfortable train is always a plus.

Why use Standard Gauge? Wouldn't it make more sense to use Iberian Gauge, since that's what the rest of Portugal uses? Spain already has trains that can run at 300 km/h and can also change gauge between Standard and Iberian gauge, so the whole break-of-gauge thing isn't a problem like it once was.

@@NonstopEurotrip 1) The TGV is nothing more than XIX Century based technology. Steel wheels on a steel Track. A huge waste of energy. The future probably belongs to an improved version of the MEG-LEV TRAINS. An improved version will be ENERGY-FRUGAL AND FASTER THAN A TGV. And its construction doesn't require the expropriation of huge chuncks of land to install the tracks. 2) Portugal may and should improve all the Track/Network to enable its ALFA PENDULAR to reach any destination in the country. And obviously, a TGV is able to run on an improved track of that nature -- slightly reducing its speed. Does it make any sense to invest billions in an old technology? And by doing so, what could be accomplished? The distance between the border and Lisbon, or Porto, is around 200 kms. In sum, 15 or 2o minutes could be "shaved" by resorting to a TGV at full crusing speed. On the other hand, a TGV running at a slightly lower speed in that particular, improved track-segmen, would take an extra 15 minutes to reach Lisbon or Oporto 3) Makes no sense! Sweden, Norway and the USA didn't follow the TGV approach. Far too expensive and the final-results don t justify addopting an old, expensive to run and build technology. The future may not belong to the MEG-LEV -- time will tell. However, rhe TGV , very expensive to build, imposes a terrible waste of land -- from an environmental view-point doesn't make any sense.

You know it, I've already said it several times, I very often watch the old videos of the channels that I appreciate, Dylan, you, and also of course the "cab rides" how to put it, filmed by the drivers themselves . There, I was re-watching the old videos of my favorite train fanatics (Dylan, you, and all the others), and I came across this video ... that I had not seen !!! Since I did not have access to the Internet, I missed this video. So, I really liked the way you filmed, and everything. That happiness. And, what luck, in addition, we find the KZbinur superalbas in this same video !!! Gorgeous !!! But tell me, do you plan your videos together, all the train fanatics, just to pay less and especially to exchange good plans, or is it pure luck and you each do your own? We made the same journey 5 years ago (but in Turistica class) as part of a group organised by Treyn. I echo all you say about the journey & was particularly impressed by the station in Lisbon.

Last time I rode on one of these was in 2017, just when the first units were being refurbished. They really needed it, it was still a comfortable train but everything felt old and worn.

Mid-life upgrade, they call it. They're basically stripped and rebuilt incorporating modern technology and materials. Let's hope some time in the next 20 years they'll finally be able to stretch their legs with sustained 220km/h in new track instead of yo-yoing between express and suburban speeds.
