These things originate from southern Europe and has spread to South America, to Africa and all the way over to China and Japan. They amassed substantial amount of wealth during these trading and colonizing endeavors, so its not so strange they just hang out, lazily in the waters nowadays.

A friend of mine and I used to joke than Man O Wars communicated by squeaking. This cracked us up more than it should've. We used to say we'd go fishing in a small boat and be surrounded by squeaking Man O Wars. They don't seem to squeak, however.... :)

"man-of-war" was one of the biggest naval war ships back in 18 century. Maybe because of the top that looks like a sail and the buttom tentacles consisted of a lot of deadly poision (cannons) it was cold the man-of-war. Dont you think?

In Portugal we call it "Caravela Portuguesa", literally translated as "Portuguese Caravel", because of the thing in the top of the body that looks like a sail, a name that makes much more sense then "man-of-war" if you ask me...

Well, a Man-of-War was a powerful warship from the 16th to 19th century that had up to 124 cannons, this animal is named after that for the reason that it is a dangerous animal with lots of weapons.

People rarely die of these things, because even with the severe pain (which they say feels like red-hot barbed wire slashed across your leg) they can still swim away and get onto land. On top of that, the adrenaline helps them get to safety and the screaming makes it so everyone nearby knows what's happening so they might try to help. Plus the cure is simple: vodka, vinegar, or, if there is nothing else, pee can help neutralize the venom, which is still not as deadly to fully grown humans as it is to those small fish. In large creatures like us, the Man of War's venom mostly just causes extreme pain, making for a very effective defense.

man-of-war is the name of certain type of ship used during the Great DIscoveries of the Americas in the XVI/XVII centuries :D this creature was named like this because it resembles that ship and dwells in the shores of Portugal, mainly Lisbon i believe, oh, and the guy wasn't lying, they do travel in groups, last time i was on a boat i saw nearly thousands of them floating. by the way, i'm portuguese so trust me on this one :)
