Both great choices. We have both in our extended family, but PWD’s for me are preferred.

The dog breeds look so much alike except the PWD has a shorter muzzle and option for wavy coat, this strongly makes me suspect the modern Std. Poodle and PWD have origins from the same dogs. Obviously the Poodle didn’t originate in France so there is no reason to suspect the PWD originated in Portugal. People stating that they are different because poodles were retrievers and PWDs helped on boats need to study dog breeds more. Labradors, a retriever, came from dogs that helped fishers in their boats with pulling in nets and such. In the 500+ years since the origin of the Pudel in Germany, the two dog breeds could have split from the original line.

well, i really think that pwd have a slightly wider muzzle aswell. And a more defined head. Mine is cut short as of now so i have been reflecting about just that.

Portuguese Water Dogs as working dogs in water comes from over 800 years. They were described as “lion dogs” with curly hair, so the breed was more or less stable snd known since 1297.

My experience with pwds is that within ant given litter you can find bird dog retrievers, scent hounds, diving fishing dogs, herding dogs, and companion guard dogs. Many traits expressed differently among the litter.

Anyone can create a video. Not everyone can live wirh a pwd. It takes a special person to understand this ancient breed. In the 90's, my first pwd met another pwd passing by on fishing boat. The two were very excitedcabd spoke to each other in a language unknown yo us. The bteed tends to like its own kind the best.

a standard poodle is larger, if it is your first dog you will be surprised about how the size feels. dont worry about that so much. If you work a lot with your dog the size dosnt really matter thta much(except for food costs)
