I find it so mind boggling that 80 years ago people were just flying and fighting in these machines. To put it into perspective. They barely had electricity as a standard light source and yet they're flying at 10km altitude over the whole Atlantic. It just shows how one of the very few upsides of war, is the rapid advancement in technology and engineering.

My grandfather got shot down by an ME-262 over Berlin in 1945. He was a waist gunner on a B-17. 262 pilot came in high and shredded the number 4 engine and took off several feet of the left wing. The pilot then continued is angle of attack by diving between the wings and tail of my grandfather plane. (Boom and zoom if you will) Multiple crews reported seeing the 262 in flames as it dove away so my grandfather was given credit for the kill. (Making him a gunner ace on his final mission.) My grandfathers plane then made a wheels up landing in a potato field in Poland, where he was picked up by the Soviets. No one on his crew was injured.

The P-61 had a gun camera mounted in its remotely sighted top turret which slewed and elevated with the guns. This accounts for the plane shooting the footage capturing a view of its own port spinner.

The "water" tower is actually a Flak tower protecting an axis airfield. These towers took a real toll on attacking aircraft flying at low level over the airport. Typically, one section would attack the towers while the rest of the squadron would strafe the airfield.

I remember seeing a frame of this film in The Mighty 8th, a very long time ago. The narrator of this video had me doubting my memory. The German aerodromes had radar sites on their AA guns, and our pilots could actually hear the gunners pointing their 20mm cannons at them. P-47s were tough,but they weren't invulnerable. These were some of the most dangerous missions.

40:51 The Japanese may have used weather balloons for meteorological intel, however, the balloon bombs were not weather balloons, nor were they converted from weather balloons. These were purpose-engineered from the outset as weapons carriers with self-regulating altitude controls to keep them within the trans-Pacific northern jetstream. The gasbag was made of paper treated with a sort of lacquer. It was an ingenious design that fortunately didn't work as expected. Most of them landed in the Pacific Northwest of the US (their intended targets) or in Canada without causing significant damage to anything, though there were a few fatalities. In one instance, some teachers and school children were killed and injured by a downed balloon bomb they found while on a school-sponsored field trip and picnic. The designers understood that their balloon bombs had no chance of affecting the US war effort directly, so they put the long-odds bet on causing forest fires -- something the balloon bombs could certainly accomplish under ideal conditions. To that end, the typical Fu-Go carried a combination of thermite incendiaries with one GP fragmentation bomb. To keep the balloon at its best altitude, the balloon carried bags of beach sand as ballast. The bags could be dropped when the onboard altimeter detected a loss of height below the optimum level. There was also a timer that would arm and release the ordnance when the mission had reached its pre-estimated attack position. The War Department realized the potential danger of these automated balloons and in cooperation with the Department of Agriculture created the first air-mobile firefighting force. Soldiers training as parachute infantry, many of them African-Americans, were seconded to Forestry Service, to act as first responders to any successful balloon bomb attack in a remote area inaccessible to conventional firefighting services. They were equipped with special helmets and jumpsuits to provide some protection from the obvious dangers of forest landings. Instead of M1 rifles, they carried spades, axes, and mattocks for clearing firebreaks. They also carried sidearms against the occasional pissed-off bear. After the war, the secret "smoke jumpers" became a civilian service within the Department of Agriculture.

I think I might add that the balloon bombs depended entirely on the TPN jetstream to reach North America from Japan. (All of the Fu-Go balloons were launched from the land. Though there was a plan to use submarines as balloon launchers, the IJN aborted the idea.) A simple hydrogen balloon would eventually climb above the jetstream and stall in the upper stratosphere. Consequently, the Fu-Go ballon had an automated relief valve that bled off hydrogen when the balloon rose above its optimal height. Working together with the automated ballast release mechanism, the Fu-Go altitude regulation system often worked remarkably well. Apparently, Japanese meteorologists first discovered the jetstream phenomenon in the 1930s and kept it a highly guarded secret from the West. The various jetstream flows weren't fully mapped until the 1957-58 International Geophysical Year project.

@@kingmuddy5898 Yes, here's a wikipedia entry about that single lethal balloon bomb attack on America: On May 5, 1945, six civilians were killed near Bly, Oregon, when they discovered one of the balloon bombs in Fremont National Forest, becoming the only fatalities from enemy action in the continental U.S. during the war. Reverend Archie Mitchell and his pregnant wife Elsie (age 26) drove to Gearhart Mountain that day with five of their Sunday school students for a picnic. While Archie was moving the car, Elsie and the children found the balloon lying on the ground. A large explosion occurred; the four boys (Edward Engen, 13; Jay Gifford, 13; Dick Patzke, 14; and Sherman Shoemaker, 11) were killed instantly, while Joan Patzke (13) and Elsie died several minutes later. A bomb disposal expert guessed that the bomb had been kicked.[30] Military personnel who arrived on the scene saw that the balloon still had snow beneath it while the surrounding area did not. They concluded that the balloon had drifted to the ground several weeks earlier, and had lain there undisturbed until found by the group. The press blackout in the U.S. was lifted on May 22 to ensure that others were warned of the threat.[31] A memorial, the Mitchell Monument, is located at the point of the explosion, 50 miles (80 kilometres) northeast of Klamath Falls in the Mitchell Recreation Area. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. Several Japanese civilians have visited the monument to offer their apologies for the deaths that took place here, and cherry trees have been planted around the monument as a symbol of peace.

35:15 "This is very very rare, this is a Ki-84." No, it is a Ki-43, visible from the thin straight-tapering tail. The Ki-84 has a thicker tail that swoops up. Also, concerning the FW-190A, this is the Russian take on it, but was also the universal observation on every frontline: "The FW-190A has great stability at low speeds, allowing it to turn at very low speeds, without falling into a tail spin." Elsewhere: "The FW-190 will inevitably offer turning combat at minimum speed." V. Orekov: "Experienced FW-190 pilots never fight on the vertical plane." Clostermann: "The notion the Spitfire out-turns at low speeds the FW-190 is a good joke." Given that the wing loading was supposedly 50% higher on the 190, there is a problem with our understanding of the basic physics of these types, which is an error in the understanding of the relationship between Energy and Force, which I outline here in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4rRdHxpjbqFrpI

On 39:13 I don't think its an F7F since it didn't see combat in WW2 and most P-61s had a completely dark (be it green or black) camo even on the belly while the plane in shot has a white belly, plus the P-61 spinner is way bigger the spinner in the shot is a thin spinner. The footage of the P-47s attacking the tower is actually IS a water tower. These are 8th U.S. Air Force Republic P-47D Thunderbolts attacking a tower on a German airdrome in occupied France, in 1944. Looked it up on Google. The old gun cam of the Flying Tigers as they are engaging the bombers, these bombers are Mitsubishi Ki-21 "Sally's." The Ki-27 is a fighter aircraft known as the "Nate" by the Allies and it is manufactured by Nakajima, which was then replaced by the arrival of the Ki-43 "Oscar" later on in late 1941-1942.

there were a couple of P-51 Mustangs that were able to shoot down three ME 262's on one mission. When the ME 262 had to engage a slow moving bomber, the ME 262 also had to slow down in order to strafe it. Just then two P-51 Mustangs banked right, and were able to get to a sizeable distant behind it. With the sun blinding the ME 262 pilot, looking behind him, trying to see both P51's that were behind him, they were able to shoot the ME 262 down. The ME 262 also had another major hindrance...the lower it got to ground level, the force of gravity would severely slow it down and it was not very maneuverable to say the least. Second kill came when another ME 262 had one of its engine's hit from debris when it strafe a bomber from behind, because it flew to fast behind it. One P-51 Mustang was tailing it and literally got lucky, and was able to nail it with only one of its engine's operating at full-speed or half-speed. The third and final kill of the day, and this is the one I remember most of all, because two pilots broke out of the box/formation of escorting their bombers and chase an ME 262, tailgating it, knowing it was heading toward a nearby runway. The bomber formation already dropped its payload and ME 262 burned up fuel very rapidly. The ME 262 lowered its flaps and wheels, not knowing what was fast approaching behind it. The P-51 Mustangs strafe it as it exploding into and down the runway. As the story goes, one of the two P-51 Mustang pilots, turned their airplanes around and flew down and back up the runway, waved at two German officers standing at the edge of the runway...who were both shocked when they noticed the pilot. true story

Couple things! First off -- good to see another P-47 fan. The P-51 was a marvelous bird, by all means, but the P-47 won the war. P-51 just swooped in to steal the glory. ;) Second, on that L2D shootdown, I really don't think it was an F7F. I'm pretty sure the F7F didn't see combat use until Korea. Although the cowling's only in frame for a moment, I'm pretty sure we're not even looking at a heavy fighter, but a PB4Y Liberator, or if we're incredibly lucky, Privateer. Incredible footage indeed!

The 51 was able to escort the bombers all the way to Berlin so it got the glory for doing that, and the thanks of the bomber crews for sure. "Little Buddies" was a common term. But yeah, I always loved the P-47 as it was built like a Cadillac of the skies, was super durable and did a huge amount of damage during its time.
@gnomish844
@gnomish844 Жыл бұрын
@@chipsawdust5816 -- Which is a pretty big misconception. The P-51 could outrange the P-47 on internal fuel alone, but the P-47 with tanks had more legs than the P-51. Especially since the P-51 was only able to carry 2 drop tanks, whereas the P-47 could carry 3 (center drop tank -- P-51 had an intercooler there and no hardpoint). Early in the war, the US bomber doctrine was anchored on the idea of bomber self-defence. It was believed the combination of speed, altitude, and defensive firepower would ensure the bombers would get through to the target without the need for fighter protection. Because of this, the Air Corp leadership downplayed the need for long-range fighters in an effort to spend more funds on bomber development. This even went as far as showing no interest in the development of fighter drop tanks. Reality prevailed once the bombing effort commenced in Europe and it was quickly learned that the bomber did indeed require fighter escort to minimize bomber losses. The Air Corp leadership was slow to learn or at least admit this lesson which likely explains the existence of these range maps with misleading information. Eventually all of this caught up, drop tanks were used, and long range escort mission were flown by both the P-51 and P-47. Look at what flew in Big Week. P-51s, for sure, but a lot more P-47s were flying. The P-51 was a beautiful machine, an absolute feat of engineering. However, it got heavily upplayed. Why? War bonds. A sleek, 'futuristic' fighter that could escort your bombers all the way to the target! Spend your money now!!

Wasn't that our old friend Eric "Winkle" Brown, who test-flew more aircraft types than anyone in history? He also holds the record for most carrier landings (Well over 2000 IIRC), because one of his jobs was to test carrier arrestor gear on new carriers or those which had major repair done to the arrestor systems. He flew off of, and survived the sinking of, the Royal Navy's first aircraft carrier. He flew as a passenger with Ernst Udet at the Berlin Olympics in 1936, and met Hannah Reisch before the war. He was actually in Germany when the war began and was arrested by the SS and expelled into Switzerland. His house got wrecked by a V-1. Truly the most interesting man who has ever lived. Or at least flown. Died in 2016 at 97. A movie / miniseries about him would be absolutely amazing, and the most expensive movie or miniseries ever made.

About the L2D footage at the end: a) the attacking plane cannot be P-61, 'cause it doesn't feature prop spinners and P-61s used Curtiss Electric props while on the video we can clearly see Hamilton Standard prop hubs; b) it can't be F7F Tigercat, because these arrived to Okinawa one day prior to armistice and thus did not see combat during WWII; c) but first and foremost, as the camera switches from front view to side view, we can see that the camera operator sits in a four-engine airplane, with number 2 engine prop hub visible on the left. This footage is not very rare actually and I recall It's reported to be shot by US Navy crew, which would mean we might "be" aboard PB4Y Privateer here. About Flying Tigers footage: Ki-27 was a fighter - I suppose you meant Ki-21 Sally, but in either case, since AVG guys fought predominantly IJAAF units, the only options we have are Ki-21 and Ki-49 Helen. In this footage, judging from the wing planform, carb inlets on top of engine nacelles and lack of dorsal greenhouse I'd say it's most likely the latter.

Interesting fact the Japanese balloon bomb concept was first used by the English after France had surrendered. The English were releasing balloons with bombs with the hope to start forest fires in Europe. The program was thought to be ineffective and discontinued. Additionally, A Japanese model of the C-47 was once used in an attack on a US Air Base in the Philippines. The aircraft loaded with Japanese paratroopers landed normal at dusk and the U.S, ground crews couldn't tell it was Japanese. They guided it to a parking spot. A bad night for the U.S. airbase.

My father armed P-47's and P-51's in Europe. He said they were always getting in each other's gun camera films, but somehow didn't get shot to pieces. He trained on P-38's in the US, and said they were a lot easier to aim, because the guns fired straight ahead. The single engine fighters had their guns converge at 36 yards.

Our of curiosity, do you know the name of any of the pilots from the footage with Me-262s? I ask because one of my grandfathers old teachers was a P-51 ace and shot down a 262 while it was on takeoff. According to my grandfather he had seen gun camera footage of it, but I’ve never been able to find it or really much info on the pilot in question. His name was Elmer Riffle I believe

39:12 There's a bulge on the left that looks like another propeller spinner so I think that might actually be a 4 engine aircraft. My best guess is that it's either a PB4Y-1 Liberator or PB2Y Coronado. The Tigercat didn't see combat in WW2.

Years ago reading in a WW2 history magazine there was a short story of a bomber raid (B-17s) lin the later part of the war. In the raid the author described the formation was jumped by several ME 262's. One shot down two of the Mustang escorts and was coming around to attatck the bombers. Many of the gunners tracked and fired at the jet and where the .50 caliber fire converged the airplaned exploded in a bright flash. It was described as if the pilot had run into the side of a canyon. Literally stopped him in mid air. Must have been quite a sight to behold. .

Those Japanese balloons were fitted with sandbags and valves, controlled by an altimeter of sorts that kept them in the jet stream. The bombs were released by a very long timer fuse; several incendiaries with a big one for the finish.

The aircraft doing the shooting at 39:21 is a four engine heavy. Could be a B17, B24 or PB4A. If you look closely you'll see the prop spinner of the inboard engine in the bottom left of the picture.

On the Me 262 when you mention the engines dying if you put to much power on to fast its was both a design problem and also a material problem Germany didn’t use any good metals for the engines and under stress the engine blades would break if to much power was put on

I believe I'm a bit late to point it out but at the 34:49 mark, we are seeing a TA152 H-1 , probably. The wings are a lot longer than of a traditional Focke Wolf and thinner. Also, since only 69 were made, seeing one on a video it's like seeing some sort of a ghost.

Very last scene: The Fairchild - Bell and Howell or clone 16 MM camera has prods thrust into the scene when a trigger is pulled. Color shots: Armed Services requested and got, in 1938, Kodak Aerocolor negative film to replace Kodachrome and Kodachrome A indoor film, because field developing Kodachrome was too complicated. All gun cameras had an amber 85 filter and Aerocolor negatives were distinctly neutral grey-tan instead of amber, like civilian film. The 2 engine plane attacking the Jap DC3 was a Grumman, not a Marauder or Black Widow. Most black and white gun camera film was Aerocolor, that faded or was developed late after WW2. Gun camera magazines often finish with Air Corps home movies. Many magazines have never been developed after 80 years.

Concerning that blue-on-blue engagement involving that Mosquito, I was going with an assumption that the pilot misidentified it as a ME-410 due to the similar shape of wings and engine nacelles when looked at from behind.

39:37 I would wager a fair amount that we are looking at gun footage from a North American PBJ-1. The PBJ was a US Navy/USMC variant of the B-25, often fitted out with airborne search radar, and were used for ASW patrols. The PBJ-1C and D specifically carried radar. I'm saying this because the engines are not a P-61's. Black Widows have a very thick, conical propeller hub. These ones are rounded cylinders, which a lot of early war radials had. Plus the Blue/White livery is almost exclusively used by the US Navy and Marines, which the P-61 never saw service with. It was only USAAF/USAF. P-61's were always glossy Black, or olive green. It would make a lot of sense for a PBJ-1 to stumble across a lumbering transport in the pacific. It was likely on ASW patrol and picked him up on radar. Then all he had to do was line up his 8-10 .50's and go to work. Its fascinating footage regardless, and very nice to have the PBJ have some time in the limelight.

I think i figured out what shot down that japanese C-47, cant be an F7F as the engines are too far forward from the cockpit and looking at the spinner of the P-61, it looks more stubby. My fuess was a B-25 and when comparing the spinners with location of where the camera is, I'm very much inclined to believe it was a B-25

24:23 - Bit miffed you skipped over this bit since you mentioned war crimes in the other video. So I did a quick bit of research to see if shooting a parachute WAS considered a war crime or not and came across this very interesting text from Wikipedia which looks like it is referring to the exact video you just shown at that timestamp. "USAAF pilot Stanley Miles shared his experience on 13 May 1944, when the 352nd encountered a massive formation of enemy fighters. After getting involved in a dogfight with one of the German planes for a while, Miles shot down the plane, which caused the German pilot to bail out in his parachute. "I had my gun camera running," he recalled, "so I got some good shots of the tracers hitting the plane and the pilot jumping out. My wing-man was still with me, so I eased around, came back and got some nice film footage of the German pilot in his chute." Miles considered shooting the enemy pilot as he drifted helplessly back to earth. It was a topic that he and his squadron units had considered in earnest. "One school of thought was that if you didn't shoot the guy, he'd land and be right back up fighting you the next day. I couldn't do it, however, and just took the film footage of him" So although it was known to happen, this particular case looks to not be it. I still would have liked some mention of it. Anyway, thanks for the vid and commentary! Enjoyed it very much and it fills a small niche that no-one appears to have done before as you mention. Cheers!

Some of the A-8 FW 190s we’re modified for the so called storm units carried 2 30 mm Mark 108 cannon plus 2 20 mm cannon .These were dedicated bomber destroyers carrying extra armour .Making them effective bombers destroyers ,but had to be escorted by conventional fighter due to their extra weight making them vulnerable to escort fighters .

Well.. it couldn't have been an F7F because they never entered service during WW2. Two squadrons were being formed when Japan surrendered. I'm almost positive it's not a P-61 either. There's something big , round and silver on the wing between the pilot and the spinner. Can't make out really what it is!?! Air intake? Could it be a Mitchell J ?? Really enjoyed this video and it's given me something to work on. Thx alot.

My uncle flew razorbacks in the war, and I asked him if he ever shot any German aircraft down. He told me yes and it got very personal. The P-47’s were being transported by rail somewhere in Italy and the pilots were standing guard duty. He was on watch when a flight of two 109’s began staffing the train. These Germans were ripping apart the thunderbolts and he got so angry that he stood on the end of this flatcar and returned fire. He had a Thompson machine gun and said this 109 was coming for his car and he saw the rounds impact the windscreen. He said the German flew over him and impacted 20 yards beyond. He received the silver star for that one. Those guys were some kind of guts.
