I havent finished watching but i can now see why most other blender tutorials dont work, because they dont explain workflows, they are all just nifty tips and tricks which can be fine for supplementing an already built workflow, but they cant make workflows, hence why learning by youtube can be so hard.

I love your videos, you explain these workflows so clearly, it's refreshing. By the way you might know this by now, but if you press "Shift+E" (in pose mode while selecting the controls you want), it allows you to "slide" between 2 existing keyframes (0% being the previous keyframe, 100% being the next). And with this method you can also create an overshoot ! After pressing "Shift+E", simply press "E" again and it will allow you to go below 0% or above 100%.

I actually learned how to pose to pose a bit by myself, but hearing your breakdown on it clarifies and solidifies what I should be doing, and what I should not be doing, where I had no guidance whatsoever before watching. Pose to pose is best for character animation and straight ahead is great for spontaneous action like effects, secondary animation or free form animation. This not just exclusive to 3D but relates to any animation. Pose to Pose helps you with the Keys which can come from your boards, Extremes and Breakdowns. Pose to pose is key for the acting in your character animations which should comes from your boards/animatics and script. Timing is also key here as well so you should also have a timing chart for your animations to make sure you hit your key points to make sure your acting sells the story you want to tell.

Thanks for another great tutorial. I think lack of realistic ideas is what holds me back. Ideas that I have are way beyond my abilities (for now), so having something more grounded (and explained) really helps. I think I strayed from your guidance a bit and started doing the layered workflow but I guess it turned out fine. The tutorial you've posted a while ago (the one with the red panda) inspired me to take my animation study more seriously. I've been working my way through an animation course by Pierrick Picaut over the last 2 months or so. Good to see you back.
@alexonstory

Thanks for the comment! Happy to hear your getting value from my tutorials, and that your more focused on improving your animation skill. That's a big step! It's great you have your bigger ideas. Keep thinking about them and even write them down. At the same time doing smaller exercises is good cause you do more quantity. By pumping out more animation you get more practice in. Wanting to improve really requires you to produce more. You'll be making errors along the way and that's part of the process. You'll also be learning faster and seeing your skills improve quicker. For more action shots using a straight ahead/layered/hybrid workflow does work better then doing just pose to pose. That's great! The more places you can gather information the better. Thanks again for your note!

really helpful to see the way other people work and try to keep what's best for you, I've always worked pose to pose but never really gave it a try to do it with automatic tangents ( I've always worked with constant) but I do see the benefits by doing it like this, it's difficult in the beggining since if I'm just playing you have that auto transition whenever you have few poses but it does have it's benefits and you can have cleaner curves I guess. Again thank you for the tutorial

@@alexonstory how ever you don't get the option to paste flipped then. but for just copying a key it's perfect. Another tip Or should I say feature I would really like you to deep dive and explain how to use it is the different ways we have in Blender to blend keys between poses AKA Blenders equivalent of Maya's Tween mashine, but on steroids as we can do so much more than just that. Place timeline between two keys set a key then press either ctrl+ e, alt+e, shift+e and you'll see all those options. Straight up blend from one key to another or blend to default, blend to extreme aka overshoot and more, then there are different smooth options. As you can tell I'm aware of all these features, but I lack to know how to use them proporly. I didn't even completely get that part where you sat a key to make it so when you then pasted beyond that key the keys before did not change. Also how you used automatic handles on just certain keys I usually do it on many keys at once, but I see now that there is a reason to use automatic key handles on certain keys. Again please elaborate on all the ways to manipulate already set keys and why and when to use a certain type of key handles. Stay awesome just the way you are.

Hello! Very very good explanations of the process. You're excellent at teaching. I would be very interested to see a similar video about the straight ahead process and the layering workflow. Cheers!

That's very nice thank you! I'll be working on those videos next. Should have straight ahead workflow done in a little over a week then layered a short time after that.

Your tutorials have been such a great resource for beginner animators! I have been dealing with one issue tho, that I cant even find an answer to online. When I make a new pose, click a to select all, then click i for insert frame, and then move the timeline, the whole position changes into a deform look. I followed every step, and dont know why its acting like this. And I have checked the bones if they have any hidden keyframes, which they dont. It worked completely fine before, and I was about to start making other poses until blender crashed. Once I reponed it, and moved the timeline, that is when the whole character pose started to act weird. It works if I select individual rigs and insert frame, but that's not the typical way to animate a pose. Any suggestions? I had the same issue with when I tried to do a walk cycle using the Ellie model from Blender. Have a good one!

Legend -- absolutely awesome vid dude -- to echo many comments below it feels unreal to have such sophisticated yet accessible tuition here for free -- particularly find it so useful to contextualise all the technicality and creativity within the structured workflow -- in fact I think u could even refer back to those most simple, wide concepts a little more throughout the animation tutorial! E.g. if you had a returning visual cue to illustrate the pose-pose-hold-settle format when the graph editor starts looking a bit intimidating -- If it isn't too presumptuous to make a suggestion for future vids lol !! Many many thanks dude

Your tutorials are awesome! I haven't yet animated anything successfully except a rabbit standing up and some light orbs and I still find Blender very confusing, but these lessons are helping a lot. I also like how you explained your Blender setup in another video. I'm curious if we are allowed to use characters from movies like this, or is it merely tolerated if someone makes an animation just for learning purposes? Can I simply use Po's model from Kung Fu Panda and make a funny animation of my own without getting in trouble for example?

Thank you for your note! You for sure can use other rigs and characters for learning and making your own videos. You just can't pass them off as your own or make money from them. Hope that helps!
