Make sure you have good ventilation and a mask when using BIN shellac primer. Also ammonia mixed with warm water will clean your brushes and it's 1/8 the price of mineral spirits.

Laminate can also be made out of paper layers pressed together and that definitely needs to be very well sealed with the primer so no moisture can penetrate it so it doesn't swell or peel off.

Key item: if you get your paint & have the paint mixer shake it. If the paint has sat, always use paint stir sticks or a drill powered paint mixer. Need to get the heavier parts mixed in with the other part. Did not know Zinser had a shellac based primer. Game changer, thanks for sharing!😊😊😊

Sanding is always recommend especial on laminate. By doing that you create a “profile” for the paint to stick on. That will most probably avoid the need for a second layer of primer. Thx for the video. I think the bottom line is to get your proposed primer which is pricy but seems to be the best solution.
@vaderladyl

And probably avoid the "not sticking at first rolling" situation too.

@@vaderladyl Yes, even a very fast light sanding with extremely course sandpaper, does make a world of difference. This gives you the "TOOTH' for the primer and everything else to bond well. If this is a pantry shelf, or something like that, then a water based topcoat really does help. Very much worth the time and money.

If the paint is repelled you should spread it, wait ten minutes and then try again, the paint will become slightly thicker and more 'paste' like and will smear better (You can just keep rolling away but this gives you time for a cup of tea) When using a roller don't make the mistake I did - It turns out rollers have different textures. I used the same big one for the walls and it left everything a bit bobbbly, try and find a smoothish roller if possible. I had to go over everything with a big brush to make it actually flat.

Oil base primer is the best. 30yrs painter. Always light sand. Before and between coats. 3m sand pads. Paint doesn’t need sealer. The paint is the sealer. If it repels, it’s not sticking. It dried Over it and didn’t grab the finish.

I've always used Zinsser BIN (red can, shellac, alcohol based) and it is the best, but even it will have issues with glossy surfaces at times. I've always scuff sanded first and never had issues with adhesion. Just a very light sand to break the sheen and takes just a few more seconds in prep. It also tends to help reduce "puddling" that may form with primers over glossy surfaces (as seen at 3:05)... that minor texture that develops.

Thanks for the video! I took a lot away from this, I will add however, throwing in another prep step such as using a cleaning agent like krud Kutter helps immensely from the get go and BIN primer will adhere immedietly. I went above and beyond myself with using krud Kutter, followed by a light surface sand, then using the bin primer. adding the extra 5 minutes per cabinet door made a world of difference!
