Elliot is phenomenal. His parts and solos are iconic and deserved co-writer status. Remove them and you have skeletons. People are so used to his playing, they take for granted his mastery in so many styles of guitar playing. Just amazing skill and style. An incredible musicologist and historian as well. Add to all that, one of the nicest, most genuine, sweetest, humble, and kind men in the music business or anywhere else. A great honor to know him in all ways.

Oh man, I love The Cars. My cousin Angela saw them at a club in Upper Darby, PA in 1978. She told me about them and I was hooked. For me, Candy-O is the best album. It seemed like they found 5th gear on that record. True story: at age 16, I was hired by the "Other" phone company, National Telephone. They put me in a new van fully stocked and sent me our to install new electronic phone systems. This would be 1979. Had my boom box mounted on the cage that separated the cab of the van from the back. Just used zip ties. I just wore out the cassette of Candy-O. Elliot Easton is one of the best guitarists you'll ever come across. When they played live, he did the solos note for note. Another thing about Elliot is how clean he his on his leads. Not the tone but how cleanly he hits every note. It's not easy and he does it so well. I also loved his tone and timbre and he would use all kinds of guitars in order to play to the song. If a song needed a Tele, he'd play the Tele. He's best known for playing Les Pauls but I could not pigeonhole him like that. It killed me when Ben died and then Ocasik. The Cars were very influential to my bass and guitar playing. Just a really great band. No BS, no frills. They were that good.

People always say "so underrated" when it comes to Elliot Easton, but it really is true, some of his solos of those Cars records (Tonight She Comes comes to mind right now!) are out of this world great. Thanks for a very enjoyable interview. 🎸

I play guitar - I'm pretty good - I should be - been fooling with it since mid 80s - I asked my guitar teacher , who was a classically trained musician and bad ass guitar player - who he thought was as good as Jimmy Page - He said -Alex Lifeson and Elliot - High praise from him - point is - I can tell you first hand those short , concise solos - they ain't easy - there's a lot there - in a short period - It's absolutely great -

His Tone and playing on "Let the good times roll" made me a BIG fan from the start in 1978. The whole album is smoking!! Timeless!! No one had ever heard anything like the Cars!! They were the originals who started a great new music movement ,in my opinion!! That first album, is like what, Platnium 6 or 7 times now! To me it was like the first Van Halen Album, and we got them both in 1978!! WOW!!! All of Elliots Peers know how extremely talented of a guitar master he is!!

I grew up glued to Cars records since 1980. Elliot had such a melodic sense of playing leads that no Cars song is complete without his unique style. He made such an exciting addition to every song he took on. He was a magician that totally enthralled me. I always felt like he spent such a great amount of time crafting his solos. Nobody could touch him in terms of the arc of his solos, they were literally songs within the song. I am so grateful he is still around and shares his insights here.

When he was talking about the mystique surrounding the Beatles debut in the early 60s, I understood exactly what he meant because we’re the same age. He didn’t wanna say “you had to be there,” but trust me, you had to be there to understand that phenomenon. The Ventures, Beatles, The Trogs, Kinks, Stones - all of it. The phenomenon that was occurring then hasn’t been repeated during my 71years. I started playing guitar at age 11 and the aforementioned bands collectively were my tutor.

It's funny, I'm a bit younger, but I was 11 in 1982 when the first wave of MTV blew up, and I feel the same way about that era. My folks had a lot of music in the house, but MTV brought an onslaught of killer British (and some American) new wave that rock radio wasn't playing - Duran Duran, Flock of Seagulls, Thompson Twins, Police, The Fixx, Sparks, Stray Cats, Adam Ant, The Clash, Bow Wow Wow, etc. etc. Perhaps it wasn't on the scale of the 60s, but the 80s certainly was an incredible musical zeitgeist of its own... and you really did have to be there... it wasn't all dayglo and spandex. And to be clear, I was a huge Cars fan all along - a family friend who was a local rock DJ made me a mix tape for what was probably my 9th birthday. It had "Just What I Needed" on it, and even as a little kid, I knew it was the best song on it.

In 1981, I had two guitar heroes who were completely different: Eddie Van Halen and Elliot Easton. What I like so much about Elliot is not only is a good player, but he's a thoughtful player who knows when to shine and when to hold back. His solos are remarkable for being so concise and simple, yet grand and stately. He's a true talent. Also, I hadn't realized until recently that he original started as a right-handed guitar player, but was coaxed into playing left-handed.

8:31 - the best advice for any lead guitarist. I can't tell you the number of times I've been in a band and tried a new song, and the lead guitarist is all over it before even knowing where it's going. It's harder to find the right thing when there's a whole lotta wrong thing, getting in the way. Comically, I've also seen the reverse problem: where someone is showing me a new song, and then assumes I don't like it because I didn't instantly start slathering it with licks. But it always sounds better when you know what kind of sound, what kind of mood, what kind of energy = cohesive performance

He doesn’t mention a single, classic jazz guitarist, but l’ll bet he could name a few he’s always enjoyed listening to. I would have asked that question. My Ed Sullivan Show Beatles experience was somewhat similar. I was a month shy of turning 10 when I watched them that night. The next day at school six or seven kids in my class were outside marching around with arms linked singing “She loves you, yeah yeah yeah” over and over. I jumped in with them until we had to go inside.

With Easton's solos, of course you have to play them note for note at a gig. They really are an integral part of the song. But, ideally, to give that live vibe, the guitarist should get a second solo which is pure improvisation. I saw George Harrison do that when playing "Something" live. Although usually it would be a second guitarist (like Eric Clapton) doing the improvised part.

Elliott said that he was into robbie robertson and the band, and i have read that elvis costello and his producer nick lowe really liked them a lot, and elliot and costello are total beatle heads and seeing as elvis has not had a great guitarist since he workad with john mcfee why not work together , there such eclectic musicians.

Listen to Bye Bye Love by Cap'n Swing the original - Then listen to the Cars version, it makes the original sound cute - soft cell. Elliot didn't get around to mentioning Milkweed & Cap'n Swing Rick & Ben's earlier bands Also I thought Elliot was in Thirteenth Floor Elevators or the Moving Sidewalks Roky Ericson or ZZTop which was it ? Bye Bye Love just the beginning - The song is hard to look up on you tube you get so much Everly Brothers covers . I remember the album on the shelf for about a year . Around here in Western Maryland , part of it - I popularized the Cars and Van Halen Cars record was on the rack at a store called Two Guys. There were two stores called Two Guys If Rick was with us he might remember Two Guys in Baltimore and there was one in Hagerstown. That album was on the rack for a year and I had not heard anything Then a few more months went by and a friend had a tape . I took the tape I had been listening to all day in the bar - the inn - the Mountain View Inn and the KiX (The Shooze) were on break and I managed to get Joe Procoppio to play the Cars tape. They would always play music from the soundboard during breaks. Somehow I made sure everybody there that night got an earful of cars. At the View we had Kix they had their Cold Shower on the Soundtrack of Waynes World - until the no playing STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN controversy So they had to take out Atlantic material from the movie - Drats they premiered their second album on Beavis & Butthead - COOL KIDS We had Chad Smith and Toby Redd we had Shannon Larkin the Wrathchild, he was 14 . Hes moved onto join Godsmack and he was in with Candlebox, Cotton Eyed Joe 🤣🤣🤣 We even had Joey Welz spinning records. We were desperate so we got one of Bill Haley's Comets to spin records on Sundays 🤣🤣🤣 I went to get the Van Halen album at the record store it was the one and only Van Halen album at the time 1979 . A guy from Glen Burnie had tuned me into Van Halen. The record store hadnt heard of Van Halen they had to order that …

Something I'm noticing with almost a total consistency from these interviewers under 40: they do not know how to remain quiet and let the interviewee respond completely before asking their next question, or those that come up in response to something the interviewee says. Have a notepad and make notes! Let the interviewee speak without interruption. Think Dick Cavett, Charlie Rose, etc. This fellow is much better than most, but it still happens in this interview.

I still laugh when I think about Hendrix opening for the Monkees. You know all those moms and their little girls were probably peeing their pants and getting traumatized. The people who booked that tour probably laughed so hard they were reduced to tears. It's hard to comprehend at this very late date, but back then, Hendrix was *scary* *as* *hell* to straight/square white Murica.

This guy just relentlessly tries to shoehorn in (as Elliot’s talking) how many names/bands & EQ trivia he knows. Wow. 😮‍💨 (Thinks he’s gonna teach Elliot who The Shadows were. lol) 🤦‍♂️

We want to hear what Elliott Easton has to say. Weaving your limited experience into this interview is not really needed. Elliott is being nice, but in truth there isn’t really anything you can illuminate for Elliott that he’s not currently aware of. The more you allow Elliott to speak the better the interview. The more you go on about “your generation” the more the interview suffers. Rick Beato doesn’t pad his interviews with all his experience. He lets the subject of his interview to say ALL THEY WANT. Be like Rick. Btw congratulations on scoring an interview with Elliott Easton. You’re a fortunate lad. Cheers -
