1. Sing their names if they're sitting well "I like the way that James is sitting" to the tune of 10 little indians 2. Whisper to get their attention 3. Game - Simon says e.g. If you are sitting on the carpet crisscross applesauce and your hands are in your lap, scratch your head, pop a bubble in your mouth, beep your nose, etc. silly, fun stuff 4. Game - Dog & bone 5. Address children by telling them what you want them to do, NOT what you don't want them to do e.g. Instead of "Don't run", say "Use your walking feet"

Are you teaching ESL? I am teaching English to preschoolers in China right now and am struggling with the ideas here - how do you talk to kids who don't speak your language? You can't say any of these things, it all just sounds like blah blah blah to them.
@liel6888 Жыл бұрын
@@nofearchinesepodcast Why don't you try code switching? Or sandwich (first on English then in Chinese and then English again)
@cristelaramirez13524 ай бұрын
@@nofearchinesepodcasthi I tutored esl students. It may be fun and engaging to say the word and do the action yourself while calling names. Example: Joey, sit! And you sit down. Do it until the student attempts to copy you, then go into song with the word they'll be familiar with. This would allow you and the students to focus on the meaning of one or two words at a time and then work on putting it into context! This is just an idea. Hope it helps. Good luck!

Cheo, Thanks for watching my videos. I think the best advice for a young person just getting started is be confident and have fun! I remember being a young teach and being so nervous about not being able to handle the children. It does take time and practice so don't be hard on yourself. Also, any and all suggestions I offer in my video are things that have worked for me but if you try it and it doesn't work for you, don't worry.
