Jupe displaying his trauma was chilling and heartbreaking. Him trying to address it in front of everyone because that’s all he knows was so sad. The alien mask merch looking the same as the camera “eyes” on the Gordy show set really stood out to me. He carried it throughout his childhood and unpacked it the only way he knew how. But that way and his trauma ultimately devoured him because it was never addressed honestly and alone. My heart really broke for his character and that rodeo massacre. But the big balloon being the demise of the creature at the end felt like Jupe’s redemption. Him addressing his issues one-to-one and bursting. The film was incredible and every character was so real. I totally agree that while it’s not the best, it’s one of those films you want to re-watch as soon as it ends.

My favorite part of Nope was how Jordan Peele captured the whole "spectacle" aspect. He talked in interviews that he wrote Nope in 2020 when he was sat at home watching all of these horrible spectacles he couldn't look away from, that he felt consumed by. He also said he became a bit scared of going outside because of the pandemic and wanted the fear of leaving the house to be ever-present in Nope.

I really like Jupe's connection to the alien. Like clearly the Gordie thing was super traumatic for him as a kid, but he was conditioned to view that trauma as something that could be commodified, and even if it scarred him, at least it was entertaining and lasted long enough for an snl sketch. So he then tries to commodify something clearly dangerous because at least if something bad happens, it'll be then entertaining.
@aalllllllexx2 жыл бұрын
@Drink Your Whatever dude there is fight, flight, or freeze. He clearly looked in shock and frozen traumatized, and fist bumped because gordy initiated it and he didn't want to die. and the point of his character was he was taught to view his trauma as a source of entertainment (even when trying to present it as entertainment literally caused trauma flashbacks), which led to him doing the shit he does in the movie when he attempts to train the alien. everyone else seemed to be able to understand his character so it looks like more of a you problem than Jordan Peele.
@aalllllllexx2 жыл бұрын
@Drink Your Whatever the movie literally shows a trauma response in his first scene when he has a flashback. Not to mention, objectively, watching the entire cast of your TV show get mauled to death and thinking you'll be next creates trauma, he wasn't "just frightened." And that trauma manifests in adulthood by doing stupid things like think you can tame an alien for entertainment because you were the only one that interacted with Gordie that day and lived to see the snl spoof. Sounds like you just misinterpreted the movie so why are you in my replies starting an argument in the first place.
@MegumiCiBear2 жыл бұрын
@Drink Your Whatever If you don’t like the movie that’s fine, but don’t try to act like the movie is bad or had “unrelated stories” just because you didn’t understand it. No one is “reading too much into things”. If you refuse to have a deeper level of thinking then that’s on you. These types of movies are meant to be analyzed, talked about, and rewatched because of how many layers there are to the story. If that’s not for you, then don’t watch Jordan peele movies and go watch a movie with a simple storyline and over the top action scenes every two seconds. These aren’t the type of movies you can just turn your brain off for and watch. It wants you think. Read between the lines. It’s not lazy, it’s not unorganized, and it’s not silly. It’s just not for everyone. And that’s ok too.

I interpreted his motivation differently but I like yours. I saw that Ricky kept fixating on the standing shoe instead of Gordy. Since Ricky wasn’t “looking” at Gordy, Gordy didn’t feel threatened and initiated the fist bump. Because of this, Ricky thinks that it was his connection with Gordy that saved him when it was actually just the shoe, so this experience made him think he could also tame the alien. Apparently there was also a balloon that pops at the same time Gordy gets shot, so Ricky would’ve been killed by Gordy if the police didn’t come on time.

In regards to Mary Jo, I think It's pointing the finger at the audience. We don't see the actual violence. We HEAR it and we see Jupe's reaction, and Gordy's aftermath but we don't see what he's actually doing. And when Mary Jo is at Jupiter's Claim in her wheelchair, the audience is "teased" with what is left of her face. We WANT to see Gordy destroy these people and we WANT to see the scars that were left. And it's in that wanting that we are as guilty as everyone else.

@Drink Your Whatever Because the movie is about the spectacle. It's about our desire to see or capture horrific moments, even if it's harmful to us. But beyond the message it's also a method of film making in which you never reveal too much of the horror. Often our imaginations are far worse than what the filmmakers could do. Ask yourself this, would it have been more impactful to show Gordy attacking the crew in full, gory detail, or to leave certain things hidden and left up to your own imagination? Would people even be talking about the Gordy scene as much if it had show us every piece of the violence?

The digestion scene is just so well shot. The people get sucked up and it follows them up the esophagus. I loved this film too! Especially the Gordy part. I too had to look away when Gordy walked up to us! I do feel, though, that some people are really way too hard on Jordan Peele. If anyone else made this film I have a feeling some people would applaud it more. People are calling him elite and pretentious and a sell-out and bla bla bla. And my God, it's breathtaking how fickle fans can be. One minute you adore someone. The next minute you're trashing them. Totally spot on! While I’m sure there’s valid criticisms out there, it’s completely obvious that most of what’s being said is because Jordan is somehow supposed to live up to an image that is entirely made up of other people projecting shit onto him. He’s absolutely justified in questioning why people can’t just let him make movies. I absolutely loved NOPE & think a lot of people’s confusion about it comes from them looking too deep into it. It’s pretty straightforward overall in what it’s trying to accomplish, and I think Jordan excelled here in some ways he hasn’t in the past; although, I haven’t seen his other movies in so long I’m not confident to say this is his best. The theory you mention here about the shoe is my new favorite. I initially thought that it could have been indicative of some other extraterrestrial activity that would further explain Jupe’s relationship to the alien in the movie, but I think overall him being a somewhat unreliable narrator fits better, especially remembering how he recounted the SNL sketch. For me, the only moment that truly dragged was when Emerald kept cranking that damn camera at the end. Other than that, I actually liked the ending a lot, but I think it’s because at a certain point, I made the choice to stop viewing it as a horror movie and watched the last act as a sci-fi western. I was able to enjoy it more that way because I wasn’t anticipating anymore horror elements. The middle is my favorite though as a horror movie fan; I think some of those visuals are absolute gold! The moment the blood started dripping down the window is the moment this movie met my expectations and became one of my favorites of the year so far. Might end up being my ultimate fav of 2022. This movie had such a good energy to it, and I think it’s because the cast and crew really were all just out to make a movie they wanted to make for the hell of it, and I can certainly appreciate that!

I think the cinematographer character is fascinating. He loves the visuals of film so much (which is what makes him an incredible cinematographer) that he's willing to die, and is quite aware that he IS going to die--many artists would do the exact same thing for their magnum opus. Though we do get hints that he's dying anyway: the bottles of pills, the weakness, the intense coughing... I think the viewing of the animals killing each other foretells his own death--he's the tiger who gets suffocated by the constrictor. Does any of this make him less culpable in your "spectacle" idea? NOPE. But it does explain it. Also, I agree that GET OUT is his best and NOPE is his "weakest," though even at his worst, he's better than most.

The scene with the screams is extra haunting for me because there was a phenomenon that ppl were posting about on KZbin called eerie sounds in the sky. Ppl were recording them being outside and hearing weird trumpet type sounds from everywhere in the sky. On one of them some guys were in some woods n hearing that but instead it sounded like screams. When I saw that scene I was instantly reminded of that video and it freaked me out so bad 😭

Thanks so much for your fun and thoughtful horror breakdowns, love the channel! I absolutely loved Nope, and I thought the title was actually clever. During the movie OJ asks Emerald “Is there a name for a bad miracle?” and her response is simply “nope”. I feel this is a double meaning as in, there is either no name for a bad miracle or you can call a bad miracle “Nope”. Also my ranking of Jordan Peele movies would have to be 1. Nope 2. Us and 3. Get Out. I feel he is just getting better and better with each film. Thank again and congrats on the little one 🎉

I actually really liked the ending where the alien changes form to resemble a biblical angel. My friend and I keep talking about that scene it genuinely looked so beautiful. Jordan Peele said he took inspo from neon genesis evangelion which is probs why I liked it so much. A lot of the movie had really cool references to old Japanese tokusatsu as well, but the ending especially. The ending also reminded me a lot of Jaws (but in the sky lol) which I love - very much a twilight zone ep turned creature feature !

As a fellow pregnant person, congratulations! I want to correct a small detail (not about the movie) the real-life woman disfigured by Travis the chimp wasn't the animal's trainer/owner. She was a friend of the couple who frequently told the owner that Travis didn't like her, and unsettled her quite a lot ... with good reason. Given that the owner loved and trusted Travis, she dismissed her friend's concerns, asked her to come over to "calm" the chimp, and then there were horrible, horrible consequences. I think that this story really informs the Ricky/Jupe character, he thought his "bond" with the chimp made him some kind of animal whisperer, giving him the idea that if he could "tame" a rampaging chimp, he could do the same with the "watchers." I think the point is that no matter what kind of friendship you think you have with a wild animal, asking them to behave contrary to their nature is impossible; they're called wild animals for a reason, and we need to respect their boundaries.

During the "swallowing scene" I started having a panic attack even though I'm not that claustrophobic and it kept getting worse till the end of the movie. I wanted to leave the room but my curiosity to know the end and to have an explanation was too strong. It was one of the worse screening I ever experience.. I was shaking and almost threw up since I ate way too much before the movie. Don't recommend to anybody who has anxiety or have panic attacks regularly

The chimp scene scared the shit out of me. It's so realistic. That, and the scene with all the people getting crushed in the alien tube, made me so uncomfortable and afraid. The claustrophobia, the screaming, the blood - it was really well done and honestly made me feel sick. Great horror right there. I was kind of relieved that the ending became more light hearted and funny, because if it was all like those two middle scenes, I wouldn't be able to handle it lol

And I love that at the beginning of the movie when Emerald is doing the safety briefing it just seems like a joke about her not knowing how far back in her lineage the jockey was, but realizing that it's actually because she had memorized her late father's safety briefing video and forgot to add the extra great made me cry in the theater. Like obviously it was in part because she needed to memorize the safety briefing, but the fact that she later put it back on to watch was also showing that she was equally affected by his passing and probably feels disconnected from him compared to OJ.

so happy for you sarah!!!! i think the other thing with the spectacle aspect that got me was how in our day with the internet we just constantly have spectacles being force fed to us all the time. So like, when they said “it’s in the cloud” and when the alien (i think, my memory is hazy) gets called “the viewer.” oh and when the police say on the news when talking about Jup’s farm, they don’t have the cameras so it’s impossible to say what’s going on. So many aspects of the movie had “pics or it didn’t happen” energy

OH! And I saw a theory too that the table cloth in the Gordy scene with rick, while he thinks they’re having a moment. It’s the table cloth that’s protecting ricky park not his magic bond with animals. So his confidence to tame the alien is completely built on a lie.

I picked up two Easter eggs while watching it. One was when they were trying to film the alien at the end and Angel says "They're herrre" (Poltergeist). The other was during one of the shots of the alien flying around, the score was very reminiscent of the tune from Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

The ingestion and digestion of the audience made the hair on my skin stand up and I felt it triggered my claustrophobia and the innate fear of being prey/eaten alive. I absolutely hated it (but in like a good way cause damn it was the best part cause it triggered me so). Oddly enough, every time I have seen any of Jordan Peele’s movies in the theater I always have nightmares afterwards. Maybe it’s all the subtext, idk, but I find it weird that no other horror movies do that to me at all.

So just thinking about how since the “aliens” killed his dad by dropping the keys and stuff that means the alien is coming from somewhere else that it killed a bunch of people. What happened before it got to the ranch??
@austintrousdale23972 жыл бұрын
Presumably it was somewhere else doing what its species does, i.e., hiding by day via camouflage, slipping through clouds, soaring over the Earth by night (getting seen and even photographed at a distance), causing seemingly random, brief, power outages and finally, feeding, thereby causing mysterious “disappearances” of people and farm animals.

I had a different interpretation of some of these things than most people, which I find interesting! - I didn't think the film director "died for the perfect shot". I think he realized that once their film got out the alien would either be killed or contained, and he didn't want that, but he also couldn't live knowing he'd filmed something so incredible and then destroyed said film. Throw in the eldritch-esque madness of seeing something practically incomprehensible, but the "we don't deserve the impossible" scene, and seeing his death this way makes much more sense. - Friendly reminder that the typical plot formula is beginning, rising action, climax, FALLING ACTION, end. I actually don't like how so many horror movies cut the falling action bit and end on the climax. Sometimes you need a minute to come down from it all, and Nope executed that really well. - I feel like naming the alien Jean Jacket and then having Emerald kill it at the end was really morbidly ironic. - This movie has more "Jaws" vibes than it does "modern horror" vibes and I really really like that about it.

I think you're absolutely spot on regarding the themes in Nope. I actually enjoyed this more than Us and Get Out, because it felt more thoughtful and less straight forward than the latter two. However, I will admit that there were some storytelling and pacing issues with Nope that become increasingly apparent in the final act like you said. From what I understand, it's also because this film was pared down from the original cuts length of 3 hours +

The scene that disturbed you the most was also the most terrifying for me… and what also disturbed me about that was Ricky’s attitude towards the event as an adult… the whole “spectacle” horror theme was really effective for me. I don’t think it’s something everyone will find scary but if you know you know I guess lol. It brought me back to this thing that happened in the mall on Black Friday of 2015. The mall was PACKED and there was a suspected shooter. It ended up being some teenage boys fighting- they were shouting and one boy knocked something over but when it hit the floor, it echoed through the mall sounding exactly like a gunshot. People instinctively started screaming and charging out of the mall in a pack. While running I kept turning my head to keep eyes on my siblings. Every time I turned my head I’d catch a person climbing up or hiding behind different things in the mall with their phones out pointing in the direction of the “gunshot” I realized they were hoping to catch a mass shooting on their phones. Once everything was cleared up some of them were leaving the mall, upset they didn’t catch any carnage on video. Thank god there wasn’t any real danger that day but the day has always stuck with me in a disturbing way because of those people. So the spectacle theme of this movie left me with that weird feeling.

The house scene was my favorite, too. The house itself reminded me of another house that is shown at the beginning of a horror-sci-fi animated movie, called Heavy Metal from 1981. I instantly thought of that house when seeing the scene in NOPE. Maybe it was the camera angle and common movie theme that did that for me.
